How to clean ink cartridges in printers HP, Canon, Epson and others
Long periods of inactivity of the inkjet printer may cause a noticeable degradation in print quality. Too much frequent use of the printer without taking preventive measures also leads to a bad print.
The following are different ways to clean the cartridge. Cleaning methods vary depending on how dirty or dry the ink inside the bottle is. The laser printer cartridge can also be cleaned.
Regardless of the brand of printer (HP, Canon, Epson and others), the cleaning principle is the same. The method is influenced only by the manufacturing technology of the cartridge. So, there is a cartridge with a built-in print head or a removable one. The first technology is used in printers of the HP and Canon brands, the second. in Epson.
The need for cleaning
The cartridges need cleaning, printing with Which gives defects on the sheet of paper that has come out:
- Paint gaps appear;
- The letter is filled with ink NOT completely or unevenly around the entire perimeter;
- The color cartridge loses one or all of the colors;
- The printer prints blank pages with no ink at all.

Therefore, the first step is to check if the ink is used up. You can watch it in the software that is installed along with the drivers for the printer.
In some models, the amount of ink can be checked visually by eye, since the containers are made transparent.
How to clean the cartridge
There are two ways to cleanse:
- Software. done through software, the printer itself starts the cleaning mechanisms;
- Manual. used in case of severe problems with drying and clogging.
Software cleaning can also be called “cold” method, and manual cleaning. “hot”.
Let’s give the instruction on the example of a Canon printer. Go to the “Devices and Printers” window. First press the combination “WinR”, then execute the command “control printers”.
A window will appear listing all the hardware that is connected to the computer. Find your printer and right-click on it. From the available options select “Printer Properties”.
The Maintenance tab provides the desired cleaning functions. Normal cleaning is recommended first, followed by deep cleaning.
In most cases, such actions help to reanimate printing if the cartridge is not in a running state.
It is also recommended to start cleaning the second elements, especially if the first two points did not help.
For different brands and models of equipment, the settings that are responsible for cleaning various elements may be located in other menus or tabs. If you have a second-hand printer, then be sure to inspect the other tabs. It will NOT be superfluous to look into the proprietary program that is installed on the computer along with the driver package.
For example, there is a fairly old HP DeskJet 2050A printer. There are no additional tabs in the properties responsible for maintaining and cleaning up comments. But the full-featured software was installed from the bundled disk, where there are some functions.
If you are not sure that you can do everything exactly according to the instructions below, then DO NOT start flushing. Incorrect actions can completely ruin the part, and a new original consumable can cost as a printer if the equipment is cheap.
First, we will consider the process of cleaning a cartridge, on which the PG is mounted without the possibility of detachment (HP and Canon brands).
The last option for cleaning the cartridge is to blow with a syringe, which can squeeze out dried paint under pressure. To avoid damaging the internal elements, the cartridge must be removed or shortened at least half the needle. Next, peel off the label on the cartridge, under which there should be a filling hole. Insert the syringe so that it fits as tightly as possible to the body.
Briskly push the syringe plunger in to rapidly create high pressure. Look at the nozzles for ink marks.
In case of unsatisfactory results, the last chance is to soak overnight in a lid with cleaners. Even if it is possible to restore the print, the quality is unlikely to be the same.
In Epson printers, the print head is removable. The part can be washed in several ways. First you need to get out all the cartridges, and then remove the head. The latter contains a certain number of fittings, each is responsible for one color. With fittings and work is required.

Sooner or later, especially if refills are frequent, you will have to clean the insides of the cartridge. But in normal operation, when there are no large volumes of printing, it is necessary to adhere to some rules. Then the ink will NOT completely dry out and there will be NO heavy contamination.
- Be sure to do a test print of a colored sheet at least once a week to prevent the nozzles from drying out.
- Regularly do wet cleaning of the workplace and the entire room. It will NOT interfere with preventive cleaning of the printer with a damp cloth and extraction of dust from accessible places with a vacuum cleaner.
- Periodic program maintenance will be a good preventive measure.
- In laser technology, when refueling, be sure to clean all elements of old toner. Empty waste bin, clean metering blade, magnetic roller and others.

One of the most important parts and at the same time the main consumable in a laser printer is its cartridge. Structurally, a laser printer cartridge is not such a simple device as it seems at first.
It usually consists of the following parts: photo roll, squeegee, magnetic roller, metering blade and charge roller. In addition, not all cartridges are alike, the fact is that in consumables Brother Samsung and Xerox, unlike HP and Canon, non-magnetic toner is used, and instead of a magnetic roller they are equipped with a rubber dosing roller. It should also be added that the consumables of THESE three companies have mining bins and the dosage blade in them is made of metal.
Such a cartridge part as a squeegee is a metal frame, the edge of which is equipped with a special cleaning element that has good elasticity. The main purpose of this part is to remove the toner, which remains after transferring the image to a sheet of paper.
It should be noted that the squeegee has approximately the same service life as the drum unit. Consequently, the squeegee is changed, as a rule, at the same time as the photo roll. This part has a Felt toner seal that will NOT spill out of the waste bin.
Samsung cartridges deserve special attention. The fact is that, as a rule, there is no squeegee in them. instead, the so-called primary charge roller is used, which is cleaned with a special brush.
A part such as the waste toner hopper is the part of the cartridge for storing waste powder. The latter gets there after cleaning it from the drum. Every refueling requires mandatory cleaning of this container.
First, you need to answer the following question: what is a drum unit? A part of this kind for cartridges is a supersensitive “heart”, which is a hollow cylinder, for the manufacture of which aluminum is used. The top of this product is covered with a dielectric layer.
The photoreceptor can be located both in the printer itself and in its cartridge. On some machines, for example, on Brother equipment, the cartridge consists of two parts. toner and dram. One part contains the drum unit and the other contains toner. They change independently of each other. as they wear out.
The function of photoconductors is as follows: after sending a letter of paper to print, the primary charge shaft, pressed against the photopot, transfers to it a charge with a minus sign and, at the same time, the ability to repel toner particles (powder in a cartridge). All those areas that were marked with a laser beam change their charge to positive, as a result of which they attract toner to themselves. Thus, the photo roll forms a visible print of the image sent for printing.
At the finish, paper with toner adhered to its surface passes through a high temperature oven, which makes it possible to reliably adhere the toner to the sheet. In general, a photogallery is the most capricious, but at the same time an expensive part of a laser printer of any model. As a rule, it should not be touched, since this can lead to a sharp deterioration in the quality of subsequent printing.
A corotron is a thin wire that is supplied with high voltage. The purpose of this part is to transfer charge, as a result of which some ozone is released. With the help of a corona wire, the surface of the drum is electrified, on the surface of which, in turn, a primary charge appears. Corotrons in the form of wire were used in almost all analog copiers, but now they are used much less often than before. Many manufacturers have switched to using charge rollers. But today corona wire is still installed in printers and all-in-one printer Brother.
Infecting the video
The charge shaft is a product consisting of a metal core enclosed in a rubber sheath. The main task of this part is to charge the drum with negatively charged particles. In addition, the primary charge roller in Samsung cartridges also serves to clean the drum from all kinds of debris.
This part of the cartridge is used for protective purposes so that the drum unit inside the cartridge is not damaged during transportation. It protects it from dust and other negative factors. When the cartridge is installed in the printer, the shutter opens and allows the device to charge the photoreceptor unhindered. Therefore, in order to gain access to the photos when you have removed the cartridge from the device, first of all, you must open this protective shutter.
This element of the cartridge is designed to evenly transfer toner microparticles to the surface of the photo roll. The magnetic shaft is made, as a rule, in the form of a hollow tube containing a magnetic core. At the same time, in consumables of Samsung, the magnetic shaft is called “Developer-roller” and consists of a composition that resembles high-quality rubber in its properties. There are also the so-called magnetic shaft bushing, which are plastic bushings that set the gap between the magnetic shaft and the photoreceptor.
A part called a dispensing blade is designed to create an even layer of toner on the magnetic roller. For its manufacture, use metal or plastic, which has good elasticity. Apart from mechanical wear, the metering blade is also susceptible to dirt. For this reason, it must be regularly and thoroughly cleaned of any foreign matter. In addition, the dispensing blade has a smooth surface, which is necessary in order to ensure an even distribution of the coloring matter.
Such an important part of a laser printer as a cartridge chip is capable of reading the number of printed sheets of paper. By itself, it is a small flash memory, which is filled with information related to the operation of this consumable. For example, the chip contains information about the serial number of the cartridge, as well as its type and date of manufacture. Thus, the chip on the cartridge is a kind of its “passport”, the more it can warn the user that the toner has run out.
And on Xerox and Samsung printers, the chip can completely block the further operation of the device if the chip informs it that the toner has run out. And in order to refill a cartridge with such a chip, you will either need to change it or reflash the device. Users of HP and Canon printers do not have such problems. the device will tell them that the consumable has run out, but the chip will NOT stop working.
Thus, the device of the laser model printer cartridge is rather complex. The main thing is not to forget that the drum for the cartridge in this case is its main element, and therefore, when refilling, it should be handled with utmost care. An important difference between cartridges designed for a laser printer and an inkjet one is that they are easier to refill and, if necessary, you can change any part in them. And this is despite the fact that they are NOT intended by the manufacturer for either disassembly or refueling. At the same time, you can disassemble such a cartridge with a competent and responsible approach on your own, and without resorting to the help of masters.
