Windows 10. Installing a network printer

Task: you need to install a network printer in Windows 10. Given: the printer is connected to the network and you know its IP addresses.

Solution: in the Windows search bar, type “Advanced printer setup” and run the found installation program:

In the “Choose a device or printer to add this PC” window that opens, the system will first try to find any devices on its own. If the printer you want was found automatically, just Click on it. If the printer was not found, then click on the link “The printer that I want is not listed”:

Printing to a network printer on Windows 10 from under XP

Recently, a customer discovered that after performing a free upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, the ability to print documents to a network printer connected to this machine from computers running Windows XP was no longer possible (despite the end of support for Windows XP, it is still widely used in small and budget organizations).

If you double-click from a Windows XP computer on a network printer installed on a Windows 10 PC (the network is a workgroup without a domain), an error appears

When you try to connect a network printer on XP through the Connect printer context menu item, you are prompted to specify the username and password of a user with rights on the remote computer (Windows 10).

After entering the username and password (even a local Win10 account with administrator rights), an error appears:

What’s most interesting, from the XP client, files located in shared network folders on Windows 10 can be opened without any problems (the point is clearly not the lack of SMB 1.0 support). THOSE. The problem appears only for network printers. If a shared printer in the same configuration is connected to Windows 8.1, printing from XP works without problems.

What We Tried to do: in the Network and Sharing Center on Windows 10 disabled the password request for network access to Windows 10 PCs (“Disable password-protected sharing”), switched to the Enable File Sharing for Devices That Use 40 or 56-Bit mode Encryption tried to create the same local users on both systems. Nothing helped.

In total, to connect a shared network printer on Windows 10 from a computer under Windows XP, I had to use an old workaround. connecting a printer via a local port.

  • On an XP computer, open the Control Panel- Printers and Faxes, and run the Addprinter wizard
  • Then select Local printer attached to this computer- Create a new port. Local Port
  • As the port name, you need to specify the UNC of the printer addresses in the format: \\ Win10PC1 \ SharedPrinterName (in our example, \\ 192.168.100.222 \ HPLaserJet)
  • Select or install the appropriate printer driver

Complete the printer setup, restart both computers, and then try sending your document to print. The document should print successfully!

Connecting and Configuring a Network Printer in Windows 7/10

It is difficult to imagine a local network of an office or home without all sorts of peripheral devices. The most common among them is a printer, which allows you to print text documents or some kind of graphic information. The question arises as to how to provide access to such a printing device from any of the computers on the network. There is an option when you buy an expensive printer that can connect directly to the router / router via Wi-Fi or cable. This is a good solution, but for a small network, for example, a home one, it does not seem optimal. A more suitable option in this case is to make a network printer connected to one of the PCs on the network. We will tell you how it is implemented.

But first, let’s repeat the initial data. So, we have several computers connected to one network using a Wi-Fi router. A printer is connected to one of the computers via a standard USB cable (in our case, an HP LaserJet M1132 MFP multifunction device). The task is to configure the printer so that it can print documents from any PC.

How to connect a network printer to other computers

Adding a Printer in Windows 10

Let’s try to add our printer to the list of devices on a laptop with Windows 10, connecting to a network via Wi-Fi. We go to the same section Control Panel. Devices and Printers. At the top, click on the “Add Printer” button.

The computer will start searching for devices and will most likely NOT find anything. Therefore, we click on the link “The required printer is not in the list”.

In the next window, set the radio button to “Select a shared printer by name” and enter the network path in the format \\ computer_name \ printer_name. We got it like this: \\ WINCOMP \ HP_LaserJet_M1132_MFP.

Click “Next”. Connection and driver search will start.

If drivers are found, the following message will appear.

Click “Install Driver”. After a while, the software will be installed and a window will appear informing about the successful installation of the network printer.

Click “Next” and then “Finish”.

You can also print a test page, which we did.

Now our HP LaserJet M1132 MFP appears in the “Printers” section, completely ready for work over the network.

Adding a Printer in Windows 7

Let’s install a network printer on one more computer, this time a stationary one with the Windows 7 operating system. Go to the already familiar page “Devices and Printers” and click the “Add Printer” button.

In the window that appears, select “Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer”.

After an unsuccessful search, click on the link “The required printer is not in the list”.

We put the switch next to the item “Select a shared printer by name” and, as in the case of a laptop, we write the network path.

In our case, the connection started, but soon a message appeared that the driver could not be installed.

This happened due to the fact that the 64-bit version of Windows 7 was installed on the original computer connected to the printer with a cable and, accordingly, the drivers were selected specifically for it. At the same time, a 32-bit version of the system is installed on the computer where we want to add a network printer. To solve the problem, you need to go to the official website of the device manufacturer and download the latest drivers for your operating system bit. Then you should unpack the archive with the drivers into any folder, click the “OK” button in the message window and specify the path to the directory. After installing the software, the network printer installation is completed successfully.

Installing and Configuring a Network Printer in Windows 7/10

First, let’s perform the necessary actions on a computer directly connected to the printer. It is assumed that the printing device is installed correctly and works correctly without a network connection. It will be enough for us to SIMply SHARE the printer in approximately the same scheme as the shared access to folders. However, first you need to make sure that the appropriate option is enabled in Windows, which allows you to make folders and printers public. To do this, go to Control Panel. Network and Sharing Center, and then on the left click on the link “Change advanced sharing settings”.

We make sure that the “Enable Network Discovery” and “Enable File and Printer Sharing” options are active.

Basically, if before that the computer was already working on the network and files were shared, then these options should be enabled.

Now go to Control Panel. Devices and Printers. Find our printer, right-click on it and select “Printer Properties”.

Next, go to the “Access” tab and put a checkmark next to the “Shared access to this printer” option. Let’s set the network name of the device. it must be without spaces. We named the printer HP_LaserJet_M1132_MFP.

Save settings with OK.

Problems Setting Up a Network Printer

We have already discussed one problem with drivers above. In order not to encounter SIMilar problems when connecting the printer to a user PC, it is necessary to install drivers on it for all versions of Windows at the initial setup of the host computer (connected to the printer by a USB cable). Then, when adding a printer to each new computer, the necessary files will be downloaded automatically over the network, as we did with a laptop. To install drivers on the “Access” tab, find and click “Additional drivers.”

Then put the necessary checkboxes and click “OK”.

Another problem when installing a network printer has traditionally been related to custom resolution. They are set on the “Security” tab. In theory, if the print permission is defined for the “Everyone” group, then no additional difficulties should arise when connecting new users.

If you do NOT want to bother with access rights and do NOT understand this, then just create a home group with a password (Control Panel. Homegroup) and include all computers that should have access to a network printer in it.
