Could Not Open The Add Printer Wizard

Virus problems

Quite often, a precondition for the local printing subsystem to malfunction is the most elementary effect of viruses and executable program codes. Most viruses do NOT act selectively (I mean one specific component or service) and are loaded as a process when windows starts, affecting all autorun files. Here, as they say, and the print service “falls under the distribution.” And it’s not a fact that she is the main goal.

What to do in this case? Yes, just use some kind of independent scanner to check the system for existing or potential threats. In this case, it is better to choose portable utilities, rather than regular antiviruses.

Print queue problem

If the printing subsystem is not available and none of the above has helped, then right-click on the “My Computer” icon and go to “Management”. Find the services tab and click on it. Find there “Print Spooler” and, opening the menu with a right-click, click on “Stop”. In general, this should remedy the situation and return the printing subsystem to normal operation.

Could not open Add Printer wizard local printing subsystem

When trying to add a new printer to the system and clicking on the “Add Printer” button, users may encounter the message “Failed to open the Add Printer Wizard. The local printing subsystem is not running. ” Printer installation becomes impossible, rebooting the system does NOT give absolutely nothing. In this article I will tell you what is the essence of the error “could not open the Add Printer Wizard“, why it occurs, and how to fix the error on your PC.

“Failed to open Add Printer Wizard”

Causes of the error “The local printing subsystem is not running.”

Many people probably think that local or network printers “hang” for seemingly no reason. This is not true. Quite often, such failures are observed in the case of sending multi-page documents to print. In this case, the printer SIMply does not have time to Process the specified number of pages with all the final output parameters of the document (plus specific fonts, formatting, fills, etc.).

Could Not Open The Add Printer Wizard

Unfortunately, system failures due to an unexpected power outage, damaged printer drivers, disappearance or critical failures in system files and libraries responsible for the functioning of the printing subsystem, etc., may very well be called a system failure due to an unexpected power outage, that the local printing subsystem is not running, it only takes place after the Spoopsv.Exe service itself, which is responsible for the queue and print parameters on the local printer, is SIMply disabled. In general, there can be many reasons. Consider the SIMplest methods to fix the problem.

The printing subsystem is not available. Solution

In the event that you are faced with a problem related to the fact that the printing subsystem is not available, then you should not rush and run to call the workshops and service centers, because almost any user of office equipment can cope with this widespread problem. To solve a problem like “the printing subsystem is not available how to fix”, first of all try to restart both the computer and the office equipment itself. The likelihood that such an action will help you is small, but it is still there. If such a SIMple action was NOT enough to fix the described problem, then resort to the recommendations described below.

The local printing subsystem is unavailable when connecting network printers: what to do?

Another thing is when the error is related to network printers. The connection host address may have been incorrect, the service may have been disabled by the system administrator for some reason, or there is no support for printer drivers on the local computer under different operating systems on the local network.

Here it is already necessary to clarify the problem for sure, but all the above methods can help. Well, when setting the address and name of a network printer, first you need to set the correct values and parameters, because this is what often leads to such failures.

SIMplest solution

For many users, most likely, it will not be a discovery that when the printer hangs, you can see that a service icon appears in the system tray, and when you double-click on it, the so-called “Print Spooler” opens. This is where the documents are hanging, sent to the printer.

Note that even emptying the queue will lead to nothing in most cases. But a regular restart solves this problem 100%: printing of documents starts automatically after logging in. What does this mean? Yes, only that the printer with its memory SIMply did not have time to process the queue or document format, or there were failures in the service itself.

System rollback, updates, service check and driver problems

If suddenly, for no reason at all, a notification appears that the local printing subsystem is not running, you can use no less effective means.

If everything worked fine before the crash, you can try to SIMply restore the system from a checkpoint, and in the most critical cases, use the recovery tools from the console located on the windows installation disk. All system files and dynamic libraries will bounce back.

Don’t like this option? You can use specialized utilities like Fix It! Or DLL Suite, which allow you to recover damaged dynamic libraries up to their complete replacement.

It is NOT excluded that the security updates themselves (packages indicated at the beginning of the header letter KB) can also cause failures, the prerequisite for which may be the SIMplest incompatibility of printer drivers. Here you should either just reinstall the drivers, or download their latest updated versions from the official source (the equipment manufacturer’s website).

With regard to the possible disabling of the service itself, you should use the administration (management) of the computer, where the Corresponding section is selected. Here we look at the parameter assigned to the “Print Manager”. Typically this should be the Auto trigger type. If something else is observed, you need to switch the service.

As a last resort, if the local printing subsystem is not running, you can manually delete the entire contents of the Printers folder located at: windows \ System32 \ Spool. It’s like clearing the print queue.

Assign port

The windows operating system has a so-called system of “ports”, certain areas in the computer’s memory, through which interaction with external devices, such as a printer, is carried out. Each device is assigned its own port. This is exactly what we are doing Solving the problem with the local printer subsystem in the case when it is not available for one reason or another or is not performed.

We perform the following sequence of SIMple operations:

  • Run the windows wizard “Add Printer”.
  • We mark the point of adding a local printer.
  • We put the “tick” “Create a new port”.
  • Here, specify the type of the newly created port. “local port”.
  • A window will appear in which you should enter the details of the new port. its name, which is the path to the installed printer.
  • In the next window, select our printer and complete the installation procedure.

Basically, this is all you need to know in order to cope with automotive products installation difficulties.

If the Windows subsystem in question is still unavailable, and the connected “device” still “does not plow and does not sow”, then a miracle has happened and you need to call Santa Claus for help. But such an outcome of events seems very unlikely.

Local printing subsystem is not running: how to fix the error?

You may encounter the error “Local printing subsystem is not running” both when trying to connect a new printer, and when opening the settings of an already configured local printer or when sending any document to print. This error can appear in both Windows 10 and Win 7 or 8.1.

READ  Mg2540s Printer Doesn't Take Paper

The error message text may differ slightly depending on what action you are trying to take on objects in the printing subsystem. For instance:

Windows Cannot Connect to Printer.

The local printing subsystem is not running. Restart the subsystem or restart the computer.

In an English version of Windows, the error might look like this:

First of all, you need to check if the print service (Print Spooler) is running. When the print service is disabled, you may encounter error 0x000006ba.

  • To do this, open the Services Management Console (services.Msc)
  • Find the Print Spooler service in the list of services
  • Make sure that the service is started (status. “Running”) and the startup type is “Automatic”;
  • Restart the service;
  • If the service is not running, change the startup type of the service and start it;
  • On the Dependencies tab, make sure the Print Spooler service depends on the Remote Procedure Contro (RPC) and HTTP Service (HTTP Service) services. For the print service to work correctly, these services must be running. If dependencies are NOT configured, you can restore them with: sc config spooler depend = RPCSS

You can also check the status of the print service from the command line by running the command:

Sc query spooler

In this example, you can see that the service is started (Running).

If the Print Manager service is missing or does not start, try clearing the print queue and deleting files in the C: \ windows \ system32 \ spool \ Printers folder (with the print service stopped). Then check if the Windows printing component is enabled:

  • Go to Control Panel. All elements of the control panel. Programs and Features. Turn Windows Features On or Off
  • In the list of components, find the section “Print and Document Services”;
  • Make sure the following services are enabled: Internet Print Client, LPD Print Service, and Windows Fax and Scan;
  • You can try reinstalling the components: Disable them, save the changes, and then enable again.

If the error “Local Printing Subsystem is not running” appears when you try to connect a shared network printer from another computer, try connecting a network printer through a local port (using the printer address in the format \\ PCName1 \ HP2000 as the port name). The procedure for connecting a network printer via a local port is described in detail in the article Printing to a network printer on Windows 10 from under XP.

If all else fails, run the Print Repair Wizard: Options. Updates and security. Printer (Troubleshooting Printing Problems). Run the troubleshooter.

Failed to open Add Printer Wizard. How to fix

To solve this problem, I recommend doing the following:

  • We activate the “Print and Document Services” functionality. Go to “Add or Remove Programs” (or click on the “Start” button, enter appwiz.Cpl in the search bar and press enter). Then select “Turn Windows components on or off” on the left, in the window that opens, find the “Print and Document Services” component and deactivate it (Uncheck the main checkbox). Then return the checkmark back, click on the plus sign on the left to expand the component’s sub-items, and check the boxes on each of the sub-items. Click on “Ok” and close the window.
  • Now, if you click on “Install printers” again, then everything should work;

    Check the Print Manager service is working. Click on the Start button, type services.Msc in the search bar and press enter. In the services window that opens, find the “Print Manager” (Spooler), double-click on it, and, having entered its settings, set the startup type to “Automatic” (if this startup type is already there, just restart this service);

Check Print Manager Service

  • Delete all files from the C: \ Windows \ System32 \ spool \ PRINTERS directory. Go to the specified path and delete all files from this directory. Then reboot your system, and try again to install the printer you need
  • Roll back the system to its previous state. If your system previously worked with printers correctly, and the next system update led to the dysfunction I described, then I recommend rolling back the system to its previous state. Click on the “Start” button, type rstrui in the search bar and press enter. Find a previous, more stable, restore point, and roll back the system to a previous state;
  • Choose the best restore point

  • If none of the above helped, try deleting all existing printers in the system, as well as all drivers for them, then run the command line as administrator, enter in it:
  • Sfc / scannow

    And hit enter. After the end of the process of checking the integrity of system files, restart the computer, re-run the command line with administrative rights, and in it enter:

    Net start spooler

    And hit enter. In some cases, this helped to solve the problem “Unable to open the Add Printer Wizard” on computers of some users.

    Invoke the Print Manager service with the net start spooler command

    Dysfunction reasons when adding a new printer

    As follows from the text of this error, the system was unable to use the required software tools to add a new printer to the system. Usually the prerequisite for this problem is the incorrect operation of the system service responsible for the installation and operation of local printers (“Print Manager”).

    In addition, the reasons for the error may be unstable working drivers for the printer, as well as Incorrect updating of the operating system (such cases were also recorded)

    In this case, the problem most often concerns local printers (local printing subsystem), while network devices work more stably.

So, today we will tell you about six ways to solve this rather unpleasant problem.

    READ  How To Connect A Brother Printer To Wi-Fi

    Actually, there may be a large number of catalysts in this problem, but it all comes down to the failure of a tool called “Print Manager”. The reasons can be different. malicious software, failure in system parameters, and so on. Let’s figure out how to get rid of this problem.

    Method 1- Virus cleaning

    Surely every user knows that virus programs sometimes cause irreparable damage to the operating system. Especially various viruses like to delete any system files, without which the OS SIMply cannot work normally.

    It does NOT take a lot of effort to scan your computer for malware. To do this, you can use any antivirus program you like.

    If any malicious files were found, then be sure to delete them along with any residual files. Then try using the Connect Printer Wizard again. If this could not help you, then move on.

    Method 2 Removing Registry Files

    Quite often, the prerequisite for a problem is problematic files that accumulate in the registry. You can clean it using the CCleaner utility.

    In order to start cleaning, go to the “Registry” section and click on the “Search for problems” button.

    Method 3 “Rollback” the system

    In the case when the wizard for installing printing devices previously worked properly, but now it SIMply stopped functioning, then the most effective solution would be to return the system to its earlier state.

    To do this, go to the “Start” menu and enter “System Restore” in the search bar. After that, run the tool of the same name and select the restore point you need.

    But it is worth noting that all files that you purchased since the last scan will be deleted from your solid state drive. Therefore, it is better to upload them to the cloud storage and after that I roll back the system.

    Method 4 Check for system malfunctions

    The system can sometimes “triple” and this is no secret to anyone. Such failures occur mainly due to various system utilities, to which the wizard for installing printing devices belongs. To fix this problem, you can use another system utility called “Command Line”. She is also engaged in scanning and analyzing programs for errors. So, to check for system errors, we do the following:

    1) Launch the “Run” menu. This can be done either through the Start menu or using the WinR hotkeys.

    2) In the search line, write the command “cmd” (without quotes) and click on the “OK” button.

    3) Now, in the command line itself, we need to enter “sfc / scannow” (without quotes “and press the Enter key, thereby starting the search.

    After that, the system will look for errors in the operation of this tool and after their detection they will be corrected.

    Method 5- Launch Print Manager Components

    In general, both the wizard for adding print devices and the print manager consist of several components, each of which performs its own specific function. In the case when at least one of them is deactivated, this affects the performance of the entire utility as a whole. So, in order to enable the components of the print manager, do the following:

    1) Go to the “Start” menu, and from there to the “Control Panel”.

    After the computer has turned on again, try to check if the Add Printing Devices Wizard is functioning. If this could not help, then let’s move on to the final method.

    Method 6- Checking the Print Manager utility

    This utility, as the name implies, is directly related to all printing processes in your computer. Naturally, the functioning of the wizard for adding printers depends on its work. In order to activate this utility, do the following:

    1) Go to the “Start” menu, and from there to the “Control Panel”.

    Now you should save and apply the previously changed settings.

    So, as you can see, it is quite easy to restore the work of the wizard for adding printers. We hope this material was able to help you.!

    PC scan with antivirus software

    As you know, malware can cause various damage to the OS, including deleting system files and preventing components from communicating correctly. Scanning a PC with an antivirus program is a SIMple procedure that requires a minimum number of actions from the user, which is why we put this option in the first place. Deployed in the fight against viruses, read our other article at the link below.

    Scan the system for errors

    The appearance of various failures in the operating system provokes a malfunction of the built-in and installed components, including this also applies to the Add Printers Wizard. We advise you to seek help from the standard Windows junk. Which is launched through the “Command Line”. It is designed to scan data and fix found errors. You just need to start “Run” with the Win R key combination, enter cmd there and click on “OK”. In the “command line” type the following term and activate it:

    Wait for the scan to complete, restart your computer and check if the print service is working in the “command line” by typing net start spooler and pressing Enter.

    Solving problems opening the Add Printer Wizard

    The Add Printer Wizard allows you to manually install a new printer on your computer using built-in Windows capabilities. However, sometimes when it starts, certain errors appear, indicating that the tool is not working. There may be several reasons for such a malfunction, each of which has its own solution. Today we will look at the most popular problems and analyze how to fix them.

    System Restore

    If you are faced with the fact that the Add Printer Wizard stopped responding only at a certain moment, and before that it was functioning normally, most likely the problem lies in some system changes. They can be rolled back in just a few steps. However, at the same time, the Help Information may be deleted from the computer, so we advise you to copy it to removable media or another logical partition of the hard disk in advance.

    Activating Print Service Components

    Document and Print Services consists of several components, each of which operates separately. If one of them is in a disabled state, this can provoke malfunctions in the functioning of the master in question. Therefore, first of all, we recommend that you check these components and, if necessary, launch them. The whole procedure looks like this:

      From the Start menu go to Control Panel.

    Select the category “Programs and Features”.

    In the menu on the left, navigate to the “Turn Windows features on or off” section.

    Wait for all the tools to download. In the list, find the “Print and Document Services” directory, and then expand it.

    Check the boxes for each opened directory.

    Click on “OK” to apply the settings.

    Wait for the settings to take effect and then restart your computer. A corresponding notification will be displayed in front of you.

    After restarting, check the functionality of the Add Printer Wizard again. If this method does not produce any results, proceed to the next.

    Cleaning the registry

    Periodically, the registry is full of temporary files, sometimes system data is accidentally changed. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you clean the registry and restore it using Special Tools. You can find guides on this topic in the following resources:
