But we decided to take our time and study the “bug” in real life, so the corresponding review will be later. And now we offer you a detailed test of the iPhone 11, which is no less, and in some ways even more interesting than the sensational Pro models. simply because most of the new technologies (night mode, ultra-wide-angle camera, a new processor) are presented here.

Screen

The iPhone 11 has a 6.1 ″ IPS display with a 1792 × 828 resolution, giving a pixel density of just 326 ppi. Same options as iPhone XR. However, we decided to test the display of the novelty to the fullest extent of our methodology. Alexey Kudryavtsev, editor of the “Monitors” and “Projectors and TV” sections, got down to business.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface, resistant to scratches. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are slightly better than that of the Google Nexus 7 (2013) (hereinafter simply Nexus 7). The screen of the Apple iPhone 11 is slightly darker (the brightness in the photos is 106 versus 112 for the Nexus 7). The doubling of reflected objects in the screen of the Apple iPhone 11 is very weak, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen (more specifically, between the outer glass and the surface of the matrix). Due to the smaller number of boundaries (such as glass / air) with very different refractive indices, such screens look better in conditions of intense ambient light, but their repair in the case of cracked outer glass is much more expensive, since the entire screen has to be changed. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, slightly better than that of the Nexus 7), so fingerprints are much easier to remove, and appear at a slower speed than in the case of ordinary glass.

With manual brightness control and with the display of the white field on the whole screen, the maximum brightness value was about 670 cd / m², the minimum. 2.1 cd / m². The maximum brightness is very high and, given the excellent anti-glare properties, the readability of the screen even on a sunny day outdoors will be at a good level. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable value. In the presence of automatic brightness control according to the light sensor (apparently, it is located under the grille of the front speaker), which is enabled by default. In automatic mode, when the ambient light conditions change, the screen brightness both increases and decreases. The operation of this function depends on the position of the brightness adjustment slider: with it, the user sets the desired brightness level for the current conditions. If you do not change anything, then in complete darkness the brightness drops to 3 cd / m2 (a bit dark), in an office lit with artificial light (about 550 lx), the screen brightness is set to 115-155 cd / m2 (normal), in a very bright environment ( corresponds to illumination on a clear day outdoors, but without direct sunlight. 20,000 lux or a little more) rises to 670 cd / m² (to the maximum, this is what you need). The result did not quite suit us, so in the dark we slightly moved the brightness slider up (in the quick access menu) and for the above three conditions we got 15, 130-150 and 670 cd / m² (ideal). It turns out that the automatic brightness control function works adequately and it is possible to adjust the nature of the brightness change to the user’s requirements. Note that the light sensor is very sensitive and distinguishes between conditions of almost complete darkness and very, very low illumination. At any brightness level, there is no significant backlight modulation, so there is no screen flicker either.

The screen has good viewing angles without significant color shift, even with large gaze deviations from the perpendicular to the screen and without tint inversion. For comparison, we present photographs in which the screens of the Apple iPhone 11 and the second participant of the comparison display the same images, while the brightness of the screens was initially set to about 200 cd / m2, and the color balance on the camera was forced to 6500 K.

The color balance is slightly different, the color saturation is normal. Recall that a photograph cannot serve as a reliable source of information about the quality of color rendition and is provided only for a conditional visual illustration. The reason is that the spectral sensitivity of the camera matrix does not exactly match this characteristic of human vision.

Now at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the plane and to the side of the screen.

It can be seen that the colors did not change much on both screens and the contrast remained at a high level. White box:

The brightness at the angle of the screens decreased (at least 4 times, based on the difference in exposure), but in the case of the Apple iPhone 11, the drop in brightness is less. The black field, when deviated diagonally, is lightened to an average degree (slightly more than in the Nexus 7) and acquires a purple tint. The photos below demonstrate this (the brightness of the white areas in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the screens is about the same!):

When viewed from a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the black field is excellent:

The contrast (approximately in the center of the screen) is high. about 1500: 1. Black-white-black response time is 22ms (11ms on 11ms off). The transition between gray tones of 25% and 75% (based on the numerical value of the color) and back takes 36 ms in total. The gamma curve, plotted using 32 points at equal intervals in terms of the numerical value of the shade of gray, showed no blockage in either the highlights or the shadows. The exponent of the approximating power function is 2.26, which is slightly higher than the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the real gamma curve deviates little from the power-law dependence:

The components are well separated to achieve a wide color gamut. However, in this case, the gamut is neatly adjusted to the sRGB borders. As a result, visually the colors have natural saturation.

This applies to images that have an sRGB profile or no profile at all. However, native to modern top-end Apple devices is the Display P3 color space with slightly richer greens and reds. Display P3 is based on SMPTE DCI-P3 but has a D65 white point and a gamma curve of approximately 2.2. In addition, the manufacturer claims that since iOS 9.3 color management is supported at the system level, which makes it easier for iOS applications to correctly display images with a prescribed color profile. Indeed, adding the Display P3 profile to the test images (JPG and PNG files), we got a wider color gamut than sRGB (output in Safari):

Note that the coordinates of the primary colors almost exactly coincided with those prescribed for the DCI-P3 standard. Let’s look at the spectra in the case of test images with the Display P3 profile:

It can be seen that in this case there is minimal cross-mixing of components mainly in the red area, that is, the color space native to the Apple iPhone 11 screen is practically equal to Display P3.

The grayscale balance is good, as the color temperature is not much higher than the standard 6500K, and the deviation from Spectra is blackbody (ΔE) less than 3, which is considered an excellent indicator for a consumer device. At the same time, the color temperature and ΔE vary little from shade to shade. this has a positive effect on the visual assessment of the color balance. (The darkest areas of the gray scale can be ignored, since the color balance there is not very important, and the error in measuring color characteristics at low brightness is large.)

This Apple device has a Night Shift function that makes the picture warmer at night (how much warmer. the user indicates). In any case, when having fun with a tablet or smartphone at night, it is better to lower the screen brightness to a minimum, but still comfortable level, and there is no point in turning the screen yellow with the Night Shift setting.

There is a True Tone function, which, if enabled, adjusts the color balance to the environmental conditions. For example, we activated it and placed the smartphone under LED lights with cool white light, resulting in values ​​of 4.0 for ΔE and 6750 K for color temperature. Under a halogen incandescent lamp (warm light). 3.5 and 6000 K, respectively, that is, the color temperature has become lower, and the balance has become closer to the radiation spectrum of an absolutely black body. The function works as expected. Note that the current standard is to calibrate display devices to a white point of 6500 K, but in principle, correction for the color temperature of external light can be useful if you want to achieve a better match of the image on the screen with what is seen on paper (or on any medium. on which colors are formed by the reflection of incident light) in the current conditions.

In terms of the frame output criterion, the playback quality of video files on the device’s screen is very good, since frames (or groups of frames) can be output at even intervals and without frame drops, up to 4K files with 60 fps. When playing video files with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 (1080p) on a smartphone screen, the image of the video file itself is displayed exactly at the height of the screen (in landscape orientation). The brightness range displayed on the screen is the actual brightness range for the video file. Note that this smartphone has support for hardware decoding of H.265 files with a color depth of 10 bits per color, while displaying gradients on the screen is carried out with much better quality than in the case of 8-bit files. HDR file output is also supported.

Let’s summarize. The screen has a very high maximum brightness and has excellent anti-reflective properties, so the device can be used outdoors without any problems, even on a sunny summer day. In complete darkness, the brightness can be lowered to a comfortable level. It is also acceptable to use the mode with automatic brightness adjustment, which works adequately. The advantages of the screen include an effective oleophobic coating, no air gap in the layers of the screen and no flicker, good black stability to deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular to the screen plane, excellent uniformity of the black field, high contrast, as well as support for sRGB color gamut (with the participation of the OS) and good color balance. There are no significant shortcomings. The screen quality is very high.

Design

iPhone 11 is the direct successor to the iPhone XR. And, in fact, outwardly it differs very little, except, of course, the module with cameras. As with the XR, the smartphone comes in a range of color options. However, instead of blue and coral, the aforementioned purple and green appeared.

But the four matching colors. white, black, yellow and red (Product Red). now look different. They became less flashy, softer, milky, matte. For example, yellow is now more banana. And purple is light lilac with a gray tint. It looks much more restrained and noble.

The back surface is covered with glass, the front, of course, too. The location of the buttons and connectors has not changed compared to the iPhone XR. The main innovation is cameras. There are now two of them, they are taken out on a separate square transparent platform, where they also have a flash and an additional microphone, which was not there before.

Thanks to the cameras, the new iPhone can be easily distinguished from the previous ones. And the principle here is simple: if there are two of them and they stand separately, this is the iPhone 11, if there are three, then the iPhone 11 Pro / Max Pro. In general, not to be confused with predecessors.

True, this also means that new covers are needed. And here Apple’s assortment is still modest: in the case of the iPhone 11, you will have to choose from a transparent silicone version and an opaque colored silicone. There are no leather cases yet. Returning to the design, we note that, like the iPhone XR, the frame around the screen of the new item is much larger than that of its older counterparts. And this is not nitpicking, it just really catches the eye.

The iPhone camera, like a year ago, is good in the light and acceptable in the twilight. At the current module parameters, this is a clear ceiling, and Apple reached it several years ago. It is very good that the company understands this and improves the software. However, the experienced eye can still see all the “delights” of digital image enhancement, such as sharpening on wires, foliage and grass. The sensor and optics are simply not able to resolve such small details, so the program simply draws them. Looks believable from a distance.

As you can see from the laboratory test, the camera has practically not changed over the year. The slight differences between the two curves are just the result of the harder work of the program. over, such zeal is not always justified.

In this regard, the portrait mode works very interesting. Of course, it will not create a unique and beautiful boke, but it will help to highlight the person’s figure in the background. Upon closer examination, the digital nature of this boke catches the eye, and blurring in places creeps into the person, but, on the other hand, it is unlikely that someone for some reason will need to deal with this closer examination.

The main innovation is the night mode. Advanced users of cameras with manual mode will certainly not see anything special in it, but smartphone users will notice that the camera is finally starting to shoot relatively adequately at night. Of course, the pictures by themselves did not become better, the program just learned to work more accurately with exposure, curves and saturation in night scenarios. The effects of slow shutter speeds and high ISO values ​​have not gone away, and the pictures are still very noisy. However, in miniature they look pretty.

The left image can be easily obtained from the right one using the standard tools of the graphic editor: contrast, shadows, gamma, saturation. So there is no trick here. But for users who like to just shoot and lay out the frame, this is already a plus.

This year, an ultra-wide-angle module appeared in Apple smartphones. Making wide-angle optics at this size is a big risk. Even “adult” shirikovs sin with poor sharpness and detail at the frame periphery due to geometric distortions, and in such a form factor the negative effects will only intensify. However, the Apple programmers did a good job. you can see how hard it was for them to defeat the chromatic aberrations at the edges. Of course, it is better not to look at the edges and especially the corners of the frame, but for video shooting, for example, this quality is quite enough. Yes, and photography is not so bad at times: it all depends on the composition and on the size when viewed. It is better not to use this module at night, the night mode works well only on the main camera. The ultra-wide-angle sensor also makes a lot of noise, which, coupled with the low resolution of the optics, turns all the details into a mess.

Let’s add a few subjective impressions to the above.

First, the night mode does produce a wow effect. Yes, it is clear that miracles do not happen, but even on the smartphone screen you can see the difference between what was and what has become. In this case, the mode is activated automatically and the shutter speed is also selected by itself (although it can be adjusted if desired). The maximum shutter speed we noticed was 5 seconds. But more often. 1-3 seconds.

Secondly, the vaunted smooth switching between cameras still has one weak point. Yes, the transition is visually smooth, but as long as you move from 0.5 × to 1 ×, digital zoom works, that is, the picture deteriorates significantly. Therefore, it is better not to use it unnecessarily.

Packaging and equipment
