How to add a printer to the list of printers

Installing Drivers

The first thing to do is find and install drivers. Most likely, after successfully installing them, you will not have to do anything else, since the operating system will carry out the rest of the processes automatically. There are five different options for finding and downloading software. You can familiarize yourself with all of them in the article below.

If you need to install a new version of the driver due to the incorrect functioning of the previous one, you first need to get rid of the old files. Therefore, do this first, and then proceed to work with the new version of the software.

Adding a Printer in Windows

printer, list, printers

The printer will only appear in the device list when it has been added by performing certain manipulations. The equipment is not always recognized on its own, so users have to perform all actions manually. In this article, we will look at several working ways to add a printing device to the list of printers.

Add a printer to Windows

The first step is to carry out the connection process. As you know, this is done quite easily. You need to prepare the cables, then connect everything you need, start the devices and wait until the new peripherals are detected. You will find a detailed guide on this topic in our other material at the link below.

Connecting via a Wi-Fi router is a little more complicated, so we recommend that you pay attention to the instructions that are in the material at the following link. Thanks to them, you can do everything right.

Now let’s move on to looking at the available methods for adding printed peripherals.

Windows built-in tool

The Windows operating system has several built-in tools that allow you to work with printing equipment. The process of installing a printer through the standard feature was discussed in the article on installing drivers, the link to which is indicated in the first method. However, sometimes this function is not suitable and the printer is not installed. Then you need to use the “Add a device” tool. Through the “Control Panel” go to the “Devices and Printers” section, there click on the corresponding button and follow the instructions on the screen.

Adding network printers

There are users in a home or corporate workgroup to which several computers are connected. They can not only interact with each other, but also remotely control a peripheral device, in our case it is a printer. To add such equipment to the list, you will need to enable sharing. Read about how to do this in the following article.

If you have any difficulties or problems with this process, please use the help guide at the link below.

Now on your computer you can easily find and add the required device. Let’s analyze this procedure using the example of the Microsoft Word program:

Give it a name, location, and where to look. When the scan is complete, simply select the appropriate option, after which it will be added to the list.

Sometimes a directory lookup is interrupted by an Active Directory unavailable alert. The error is solved by several methods, each of which will be useful in certain situations. All of them are discussed in a separate article on our website.

Solve problems by displaying the printer

If the above methods have not yielded any results and the device is still not visible in the lists of printers, we can advise two working options for correcting possible problems. You should open the article at the link below, which looks at Method 3 and They provide detailed instructions on how to work with the “Troubleshoot” feature, as well as show how to start the “Print Manager” service.

Sometimes it happens that no hardware is displayed at all in the Devices and Printers window. Then we recommend cleaning and restoring the registry. It is possible that accumulated temporary files or the resulting damage are interfering with the functioning of certain services. See below for detailed guides on this topic.

In addition, manual repair of registry corruption is available, but it is only suitable for printers. This is done as follows:

Start Run by holding the Win R hotkey. Type regedit in the line and press Enter.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrenTVersion \ Explorer \ ControlPanel \ NameSpace
In the NameSpace folder, on any empty space, right-click and create a new section.

It will contain only one “Default” parameter. Right click on it and select “Change”.

It remains only to restart the computer, after which a new section named “Printers” will be created in the “Control Panel”, in which all the necessary devices should be displayed. There you can update drivers, configure and remove hardware.

It is not difficult to add a printer to the list of devices, but sometimes certain difficulties arise. We hope our article helped to figure everything out, you did not have any errors and you quickly coped with the task.

Connecting to a Shared Printer in HomeGroup

Now go to another computer (s) on your network to join the HomeGroup.

Click HomeGroup and then the Join Now button in Windows Explorer.

Check what you want to share and click Next.

Enter your password and click Next.

Click Network in Windows Explorer and you should see a shared printer installed.

Setting up the printer

Connect the printer to a network switch or router and turn it on.

Find out the IP address of the printer. Depending on your printer model, you can find the IP address under Settings or Network in the printer’s built-in menu, or by printing a configuration page. Typically, pressing and holding OK or Continue creates a page. The IP address must be listed in the “Network” or “Settings” section of the page. In most cases, use IP version 4 or IPv4.

Log in to the print server using a local administrator account.

Click Start | Devices and Printers | Add Printer | Add a local printer.

Click Create New Port, select Standard TCP / IP Port from the drop-down menu, and then click Next.

Enter the printer’s IP address in the Hostname or IP Address field and click Next.

Visit the printer manufacturer’s website and download a driver for each operating system your company uses. For example, if your network is a mixture of Windows XP and Windows 7, download a driver for each of those operating systems. Unzip the driver files to a folder on your server’s hard drive. This step is optional, but adding additional drivers to the server will save employees from having to search, download and install drivers on their own.

Return to “Devices and Printers” and then click “Print Server Properties”.

Click the Drivers tab, select the newly added printer and click Add Driver.

Click Next and then check the box next to the appropriate processor architecture for the driver you are adding. For example, if you are adding a Windows XP 32-bit driver, check the box “x86”.

Click Next and follow the instructions on the screen to complete the process. Repeat steps 10 through 13 if you need to add additional drivers.

Adding a wireless printer

The steps for installing a wireless printer may differ depending on the manufacturer. However, in general, modern printers detect your network and automate the installation.

Use the printer’s LCD panel to enter the wireless setup. On my Epson printer this is under Setup Wireless Settings.

Select your Wi-Fi network. You need to know the SSID of your home network, which you can find by hovering over the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar.

Enter the network password.

In some cases, you may need to temporarily connect your printer to your computer via USB to install the software. But otherwise everything. Your printer should be automatically added to the “Printers & Scanners” section under “Settings” “Devices”.

If you have problems, make sure the printer is relatively close to your computer and not too far from your wireless router. If your printer has an Ethernet connector, you can also connect it directly to the router and control it using the browser interface.

How to find and connect (add) a printer on the local network

Do not tell me, with one problem. At work we have a printer (MFP) connected to one of the computers. My computer was installed later than the others, and apparently forgot to configure the ability to print to this printer. Now I need to first upload a file to a USB flash drive (or a shared folder), and then print from another PC.

Can I add this printer to my computer so that I can print directly?

PS all computers are on a shared local network.

I think that it will not be difficult to do this (and much effort will not be required, we must do it ourselves). In this article I will show you how you can find a printer on the local network and add it to your system in order to easily and quickly send files to print.

By the way, before finding and adding a printer. you need to share it (make it available to all PCs on the network). How it’s done. see this article: https://ocomp.info/kak-sdelat-printer-setevyim-kak-podklyuchit-setevoy-printer-nastroyka-Windows.html

Windows 10 support information from printer manufacturers

Below I have collected information about what popular manufacturers of printers and MFPs write about the work of their devices in Windows 10.

  • HP (Hewlett-Packard). The company promises that most of its printers will work. Those that worked on Windows 7 and 8.1 will not require a driver update. In case of problems, you can download the driver for Windows 10 from the official website. Additionally, the HP website has instructions for solving problems with printers from this manufacturer in new operating systems: http://support.HP.com/en-us/document/c04755521
  • Epson. Promise to Support Printers and MFPs in Windows The necessary drivers for the new system can be downloaded from the dedicated page http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/SupportWindows10.jsp
  • Canon. according to the manufacturer, most printers will support the new OS. Drivers can be downloaded from the official website by selecting the required printer model.
  • Panasonic. promises to release drivers for Windows 10 in the near future.
  • Xerox. write about the absence of problems with the operation of their printing devices in the new OS.

To eradicate all problems that interfere with normal printing in your Windows 10, run the Print-Spooler-Repair-Tool as administrator and click the “Repair” button, you will get the result, in a minute, in the overwhelming majority of cases, your printer starts working in a dozen of cases, like brand new.

In addition, I also advise you to clear your spooler, with this script, so that there are no stuck tasks.

If none of the above helped, I recommend using Google search (and I recommend this particular search for this purpose) for a query consisting of the name of the brand and model of your printer and “Windows 10”. It is very likely that your problem has already been discussed in some forums and a solution has been found. Do not be afraid to look at English-language sites: they come across the solution more often, and even automatic translation in the browser allows you to understand what is at stake.

How to install a printer without a disk: instructions

Usually, for the printer to work correctly, you need to load the driver from a special installation disc that comes with the printer itself. But if you need to connect a printer or MFP, this very installation disk may not be at hand. And it often happens that the driver was developed for Windows XP and it simply does not work on Windows 8.

If it is impossible to install the Canon 810 printer from the original disc, then you can always do it manually: this method is simple and accessible to everyone.

Update 03.10.2019

On September 26, Microsoft released another update with the KB4517211 code, it fixed the sound, but broke the print manager, so if your printer does not work on Windows 10, then check if you have installed the KB4517211 update and remove it. Symptoms can be stuck tasks or canceled by the system itself. The release date of the patch is not known yet. Material from the site pyatilistnik.org

❸ No printer driver

In general, the modern Windows 10 operating system finds and installs drivers for most equipment (including printers with scanners) automatically, immediately after connecting them to the USB port (if you have a different OS, then in most cases you have to install the driver manually from disk / from network).

Anyway, I recommend checking for a driver. To do this. open the Device Manager, click the “Refresh” button and look at the “Print Queue” tab. If the driver is installed on the printer, you should find its model among the list of devices (see my example below).

If your printer model is not among this list, open another tab “Disk drives” (if any). and see if there are any devices with yellow exclamation marks in it (which means the driver is not installed).

To update the driver: just click on the desired device with the right mouse button and select “Update driver” from the menu that appears. Next, specify the automatic installation option. and Windows itself will try to find and update the driver. Conveniently?!

If you could not update the driver in this way, I recommend that you read the instructions, the link to which is given below.
