Guide to customizing the taskbar in Windows 10
A few obvious and not so obvious steps to help customize your taskbar.
How To Add And Remove Programs Icons From Taskbar. Pin/UnPin. Windows 10
The Windows taskbar changed from version to version, but its purpose remained the same: launching programs and switching between them. This panel is used all the time, so it would be nice to customize it to fit your needs.
Resizing the panel and icons
Once you unpin the taskbar, you can resize it by simply dragging and dropping. Then you can fasten it again. This is useful if you really want to place a lot of icons.
You can also enable the “Use small icons” option in the taskbar settings. Then it will take up even less space.
Disable the taskbar on additional monitors
If you are using multiple monitors, you can disable the taskbar on all but the main one. Go to the display settings and disable the option “Show taskbar on all monitors”.
Setting up lists
Lists in Windows 10 are the menus that appear when you right-click an icon on the taskbar. They show recently opened documents, places and some frequently used actions.
You can add files to the lists by simply dragging and dropping the folder to the Explorer icon or the document to the Microsoft Word icon. Or you can pin the icons already in the list by clicking on the pin icon next to them.
You can increase the number of items displayed in the lists through the Windows Registry Editor. Search for regedit, open the registry editor and go to
You can find the DWORD JumpListItems_Maximum parameter here. If there is no such parameter, create it.
Then change the parameter by entering the desired number and checking the box “Decimal”. Restart the system. Now the lists will display as many files as you want.
Hide the taskbar
If Windows 10 is installed on a laptop with a small screen, it is worth setting up auto-hiding the taskbar so that it does not take up extra space.
Go to settings and turn on the “Automatically hide the taskbar” option. Now it will hide until you move the cursor to the edge of the screen.
We remove unnecessary
Do you really need all these buttons? You can show all Windows by simply pressing Win Tab. And the search can be started by opening “Start” and typing the search query on the keyboard.
Right-click on the taskbar and in the context menu uncheck “Show all Windows” and “Show search”.
How to return the printer icon to the taskbar
The problem of “disappeared” icons from the Windows taskbar was encountered, if not by every user, then the majority. for sure. Very often people call me with requests like: “I have disappeared all the icons on the taskbar, help me restore”,
“The computer has broken down, the volume and language are gone” or “The network icon (sound, keyboard layout, charge indicator, etc.) is missing, what should I do?” In one of the articles, we have already considered this topic from the point of view of the banal change settings. This refers to the settings for displaying icons and notifications for applications and services running in the background and starting when Windows starts up. This method is good in case of “accidental” change of settings by the user. However, there are times when the problem of missing icons is caused by a system failure (due to an incorrect shutdown of Windows, a sudden power surge, the installation of applications that make changes to the operation of Windows, etc.). In this case, a simple change of settings is not enough. The settings may be unavailable or available, but changing the result will not give.
The problem is solved in two ways.
The first method is to roll back the operating system to a restore point. That is, until the moment when everything worked and the icons were displayed. This method is effective, but quite time consuming and has one drawback. It consists in the fact that if you have installed any applications or updates since the creation of the restore point, then most likely they will not be there after the “rollback”. The system will simply return to its original state as of the date and time the restore point was created. Let’s highlight this action in a separate article.
The second way to restore icons in the taskbar is more gentle and simple. It is within the power of every user and requires only a little attention and consistency in actions. The method was not invented by me, it is contained in the manual on the Microsoft technical support website, in its English version. I offer a free translation version adapted for the Russian-speaking user.
Recipe for recovering taskbar icons from Microsoft
- In the Start menu, in the file search bar (or Run line), write the regedit query, run the found file by double-clicking the left mouse button or pressing Enter (the built-in Windows registry editor will start)
- in the navigator of the registry editor, move along the following path: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareClassesLocal SettingsSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrenTVersionTrayNotify, select the TrayNotify tab with the left mouse button
- On the right side of the editor, we see the parameters in this tab. We are interested in two: IconStreams and PastIconsStream. We delete them. To do this, right-click on the title of the parameter and select the Delete item in the menu that opens. If the registry editor swears, then delete and close the editor anyway.
- Next, we need to launch the Windows Task Manager. This is done through the menu by pressing the CtrlAltDel key combinations, or using the CtrlShiftEsc hotkeys (you must press simultaneously)
- In the Windows Task Manager, go to the Processes tab and find the explorer.exe process (aka Explorer) in the list, it is this Windows component that is responsible for displaying icons, shortcuts, thumbnails, the appearance of folders and files, including displaying icons in the area Windows taskbar notifications
- Click on explorer.exe with the right mouse button and end this process by selecting the appropriate item in the menu that appears
- Without closing the task manager, in the same window in the top menu, select File / New task (run). A field will appear for entering the title of the process, where you need to enter explorer and press Enter or click the OK button
- Close the task manager and enjoy the “returned” icons for sound, network connections, keyboard layout and other components
This instruction is suitable for any version of Windows with some peculiarities in the names of menu items and access to them. The bottom line is simple: clear the explorer’s settings in the system registry and restart this process in the task manager. In this article, screenshots for the Windows7 version are used to illustrate the process of restoring icons in the taskbar.
The above method for recovering missing icons is not the only one. After completing all the steps, it is advisable to check the icon display settings, clean the hard disk, memory, check the registry for errors, restart the computer and check the system for viruses. This is especially important if you do not know for sure the reason for the disappearance of icons in the taskbar. On my own behalf, I will add that the method described in this article is that rare case when the recommendations of the Windows developer are really useful and they work.
What to do if the printer icon disappears from your computer?
The printer icon may have disappeared due to missing or incorrectly installed drivers. Also, the drivers might be out of date. If it meant that the printer icon disappeared from the “Taskbar”, then most likely it was simply not pinned.
Try updating the drivers if the device is completely missing from the system. Follow this instruction:
Open Device Manager. You can find it in the “Control Panel” or try to open it through a search on the system if you have Windows 10 installed.
In the “Device Manager” expand the “Print queue” branch.
Find the item with the name of your printer among the devices. Click on it with the right mouse button. In the context menu, select the option “Update driver”.
The system will ask what type of update is needed. Choose “Automatic”. In this case, Windows itself will find the necessary drivers and install them.
Wait for the end of the scan and installation of drivers, if any are found.
Restart your computer to show the printer again.
It is also possible to update drivers without system assistance. In this case, go to the manufacturer’s official website and find drivers for your model there. For convenience, use the site search. Download the image and install it. Installation is not difficult. you need to agree with the license and click “Next”. When finished, restart your computer.
If this does not help, then it is recommended to check the quality of the connection between the printer and the computer. Possibly where the wires are loose and / or damaged.
To prevent the printer icon from disappearing from the “Taskbar”, right-click on it and select “Pin to taskbar” from the context menu.
You can send your questions through the form on this page.
When printing, there is no printer icon in the tray. How to put it there?
For a start, it would be nice to clarify the model of the printer, how it is connected to the computer (locally or via a network). Typically, the icon appears in the tray when data is being transferred from the computer to the printer, and disappears when the transfer is complete and the printer starts processing the job or printing on its own. If the files are small, then the appearance of the icon is so short that it may not be noticed.
Pin an already open program
If a program is open, pin it to the taskbar by right-clicking the icon on the taskbar and selecting Pin to taskbar. Once pinned to the taskbar, it always appears on the taskbar, even if the program is closed.
- Press the Windows key to open the Start menu. You will see a menu similar to the one below:
- Scroll through the list of apps. to find the program you want to pin.
- When you find the icon, right-click it, then hover over and select Pin to taskbar.
- When you’re done, you will see the program shortcut to the right of the search bar.
Removing shortcuts from the taskbar
The exact text for the Unpin option will differ depending on the location of the pinned item. For example, if a program is pinned to the taskbar, the option will be named Unpin from taskbar.
Printer icon not showing on devices and printers in Windows 10
If you find that the printer icon is not displayed on the desktop, control panel, devices, and printers, you may need to tweak the Windows registry. You will have to follow the same procedure as for listing printers using the same printer driver separately.
CenterTaskbar for Windows 10
In addition to the Taskbar X utility, you can also use the recently released CenterTaskbar to center taskbar icons in Windows 10. CenterTaskbar is multi-monitor compatible, supports vertical orientation, and uses Windows 10 animations by default Get it from the official GitHub page.
Adding a program to Quick Launch
- Right-click an empty portion of the Quick Launch, and then select Open Folder. to display icons stored in quick launch directory.
- When the Quick Launch folder is open, create new shortcuts in it or you can drag existing ones.
How to add or remove an icon on the Windows taskbar
With the advent of Windows 7, you can pin a program to the Windows taskbar. Docking creates a shortcut to a program that allows the user to open that program in the taskbar using the mouse or keyboard shortcuts. This feature is useful because you don’t need to minimize all Windows as if you were using a shortcut on the desktop.

How to add a printer to the taskbar
You can pin almost any application to the taskbar. Apps pinned to the taskbar also have a Jump List, which lists quick actions, such as tasks the app can perform and recently opened files. For apps you use frequently, pinning them to the taskbar is one of the easiest ways to access them. It’s even faster than accessing anything from the Start Menu. Depending on your screen size and screen resolution, you can pin a fairly large number of apps and files to the taskbar, but there is no way to organize or group them. You can add a separator to the taskbar though to separate app icons.
SPOILER CAUTION: Scroll down and watch the video tutorial at the end of this article.
The delimiter we are going to add to the taskbar will be added through a file hack, not through an application. This means that the separator will not change color if you change the accent color on the taskbar. You have to choose an icon for the divider yourself, or you can create one in Paint.net. The only thing you need to keep in mind is whether the taskbar has a dark or light accent color. Make your divider a color that is easily visible on the taskbar.
Zoom in as this canvas size is very small. Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl A to select the layer and click the Delete button. This will remove the fill from the layer. Then select the color you want to assign to the separator from the color wheel.
Select the shape tool and increase the brush width to 10 pixels. Draw a rectangle that touches the top and bottom of the canvas to create a vertical stripe. Save it as a PNG file.
Look for an online file converter that can convert PNG file to ICO file. ICO file. this is the icon file you are going to use as delimiter.
Add separator to taskbar
Open Notepad and paste the following. Save it with the BAT extension. Save it wherever you want.
Then right-click the file and select Send To Desktop to create a shortcut to it. Right-click the shortcut and select Properties from the context menu. In the destination field, add a conductor at the very beginning of the address.
Example: explorer C: Users fatiw Desktop 1.bat
Then click the Change Icon button at the bottom and select the ICO file created in the previous step. Right-click the shortcut file and select “Attach to Taskbar”. The file with the vertical bar icon is pinned to the taskbar. Drag it to split the icons as you want.
You can create one delimiter this way. To add a second delimiter, make a copy of the BAT file, rename it to something else, and then create a shortcut for it the same way as before. Pin it to the taskbar to get the second separator.
How to add a shortcut to the Windows 10 taskbar. Create a shortcut.
There are several ways to create a shortcut on the Windows 10 desktop.
Method one: to place a shortcut (for example, drive C), just right-click on the system folder and select “Copy”.
Then right-click on a free area of the desktop and select “Insert shortcut”.
Method two: you can place the shortcut simply by dragging the system folder from the hard drive to the desktop.
All these actions are suitable not only for system folders, but for shared folders and files.
There are two ways to add a shortcut to the Windows 10 taskbar:
Method one: you need to drag the shortcut to the taskbar.
Method two: 1) open on via “Start” or by double-clicking the left mouse button on the program that you want to pin.
2) the opened program appears on the taskbar.
3) right-click and select “Pin the program to the taskbar”.
4) close the program, but the shortcut remains.
If you want to remove from the panel, you can right-click on the shortcut and select “Remove program from the taskbar”.
Thus, pinning folders to the Windows 10 taskbar and creating desktop shortcuts is very easy.
In order to remove them, you need to make even less effort.
You can watch a detailed video instruction at:
How to place a folder shortcut (pin) in the Windows 10 taskbar
If you try to grab a folder with the mouse and drag it to the taskbar in Windows 10, then it will not be added to the taskbar itself, but will appear in the list of “pinned”, which is displayed if you right-click on the Explorer icon (an icon in the form of a folder on the taskbar ).
Naturally, not everyone is impressed by these unnecessary actions. In this regard, this article was prepared.
Information about the question
Programs pinned to the taskbar are found in two locations:
- in the registry: under “HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrenTVersionExplorerTaskband”;
- in the folder: “C: Users AppDataRoamingMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick LaunchUser PinnedTaskBar”.
To solve the problem, reset the taskbar using the method below. As a result of the reset, all pinned programs will also be removed from the taskbar.
Open taskbar search and type cmd. In the list of suggestions, right-click on “Command Prompt” and in the menu that appears, select “Run as administrator”. In the “Command Line” window, type two commands in turn and after each press “Enter”:
DEL / F / S / Q / A “% AppData% MicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick LaunchUser PinnedTaskBar”
REG DELETE HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrenTVersionExplorerTaskband / F
Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager. In Task Manager, find “File Explorer” in the list and click “Restart” in the lower right corner. Check if the problem is solved.
Warning. The proposed method is associated with changing the registry. Modifying the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method can cause serious problems that may require a system reinstallation to fix. The user is solely responsible for the possible consequences of changing the registry.
Icons are not pinned to the Windows 10 taskbar. what to do?
Each user has his own minimum set of applications that he launches daily. It doesn’t matter if it’s browsers, instant messengers or editors, users pin their icons to the taskbar to ensure the fastest access to them. Placing the program icon on the panel is as easy as shelling pears. drag the shortcut from the desktop and you’re done.
Now imagine this situation: you try to pin an application to the Windows 10 taskbar, drag an icon onto it, but nothing happens. What happened? With a high degree of confidence, we can assume that the IsShortcut parameter responsible for this function has been damaged or deleted in the registry for some reason. It could have been changed or lost due to a system failure, malware, or careless use of tweakers to optimize shortcuts. In almost a hundred percent of cases, the problem can be fixed by rolling back Windows to a previous restore point, but try this method first.
Pin the folder to the Windows 10 taskbar
- Open the file manager and right-click on the folder you want to pin.
In the pop-up menu, select Send. Desktop (create shortcut)
This will place the folder shortcut. Right-click on it and select Properties next to the list.
In the highlighted shortcut properties window, the path to the folder is entered in the Object field. It must be edited as follows: enclose the path in quotation marks and enter the explorer command text before it (do not forget to put a space that separates the command from the path).
How it should look in the end, you can emphasize in the image below.
In the next step, we will set a shortcut icon to represent our folder. To do this, in the same window, click the Change icon button.
A small window will open in which you can select the desired icon from the list of images presented.
Note: the list of icons from the list is quite small, but here you need to understand that you can specify other files that contain icons, or specify the path to the previously downloaded icon in the ico format.
Having selected it, click the OK button in this window, and then a similar button in the shortcut properties window.
At the final stage, you will only have to rename the shortcut to your liking and drag it to the taskbar, this is done simply: by hovering the mouse cursor over it, hold down the left key and start moving towards the taskbar. As soon as you are in the zone, release the key.
Done! Now you can instantly open the folder (s) in Windows 10 via a shortcut in the taskbar.
In turn, you can also help us a lot.

Solution to the problem
Open the Registry Editor with regedit and expand the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT / lnkfile branch. If the context menu of the WinX Start button also does not work, and most likely will, use PowerShell commands or the command line to execute. In the right column, you should have the IsShortcut string parameter. If it is missing, create it manually and leave it blank. If the parameter is present, but has some value, clear it, save the settings and restart the computer.
You can also fix the problem by changing the settings in Group Policy. Opening the snap-in with the gpedit.msc command and following the path User Configuration. Administrative Templates. Start Menu and Taskbar, on the right, find the “Remove pinned programs from the taskbar” policy and select “Not configured” in its properties.

That’s all, after restarting the machine, application icons will again become pinned to the taskbar, and the problem with calling the context menu of the Start button will disappear.
for Windows 8: search for it
We learned how to open the Control Panel in Windows 10, now let’s move on to the previous version of the system from Microsoft.
If you are using Windows 8, it introduces the “Charms” bar, accessible from the top or bottom right “hot corner”. Just drag your mouse to any corner until five Charms appear along the right edge of the screen. Drag your mouse and click Find (you can access Search with the Windows Q keyboard shortcut).
A search bar will open and from there you can type in “Control Panel” and select it from the results on the left. Alternatively, you can just start typing on the Start screen.
Easiest Way. Right Click on the Start Button
The last and perhaps easiest way is to right-click on what used to be called the Start button in the lower left corner (now the hot corner), which allows you to switch between the desktop and the launcher screen. Right-clicking brings up a context menu with a wide range of options. The control panel is located near the “Task Manager” and “Explorer” in the list.
And there you have four reliable ways to access Control Panel in Windows Preview Release. Of course, some of them may change before they are released to manufacturers. We will definitely inform you about all these changes if they occur.
Do you have another way to open the Windows 8 Control Panel? What’s your preferred method? Let us know in the comments.

Windows 8. Advanced Method. Settings
Log into the Charms bar again. Drag your mouse and click Settings. The “Settings” panel will open, after which you can select “Control Panel”.
Note. Only the “Charms” setting on the desktop can be applied to this setting.
How to open the taskbar in Windows 10
What the control panel contains.
The control panel in Windows 10 is practically no different from that in Window 7, or Windows 10. There are standard sections:
- System and security. the ability to check the state of the computer, archive data, access the settings of a standard firewall. a firewall created to protect the system from outside intrusion.
- Network and the Internet. admission to the settings of communication between computers, or the World Wide Web.
- Hardware and sound. adding devices, sound card settings.
- Removing programs.
- Accounts. create new ones, edit old ones, set passwords, select the administration level.
- Appearance and personalization. Windows theme (skin) selection and permissions.
- Clock, language, region.
- Accessibility. Recommended Settings, Image Optimization.
As you can see, a person who is familiar with old versions of Microsoft OS will not have any difficulty in operating the control panel in a modern operating system.
All the same functions and capabilities. So, summarizing, we can come to the conclusion that the main problem is the location of the control panel.
The presented methods for finding it will help you get used to the new “operating system”, saving the nerves of a large number of users.
There is a tendency according to which, when the market is replenished with the next “operating system”, then all programs, applications and games are produced, focusing on this innovation. Therefore, switching to using a new generation OS will be the right decision.
The main question is getting used to a different interface, a banal ignorance of where important sections of Windows are located. I hope you managed to understand this issue. Best regards, Vladislav Nikitin.

How to make quick shortcuts to the taskbar and start menu settings on the desktop in Windows 10.
As you know, Microsoft has added Taskbar and Start Menu customizations to the new Windows 10 Control Panel in the latest Insider Builds. From now on, all taskbar options can be accessed through the Settings app, optimized for touchscreen users. If you want to open a new option for customizing the taskbar and start menu with one click, that is, using a shortcut on the desktop, you can make these simple settings for quick access.
All options related to the taskbar are fully duplicated in the Settings \ System \ Taskbar settings. In the new settings, you can also. Pin, change the position of the taskbar, set up grouping, etc.
The new settings page contains all the options previously available for the taskbar in the classic control panel.
Almost every Settings page has its own URI (Uniform Resource Identifier). This allows you to open any settings page directly with a dedicated command. which starts with ms-settings :. We covered them earlier here: How to make quick settings shortcuts on the desktop in Windows 10.
To open the Settings page. Taskbar and Start Menu Properties, the command is quite simple:
You can check it in action as follows:
Enter or copy the command to the Run line: ms-settings: taskbar
The taskbar settings page will open:
With the help of the entered command above, you can create the corresponding shortcut.
Windows 8. Ribbon like Windows Explorer
In Windows 7, you can open Windows Explorer, click on “Computer” and then “Open Control Panel” in the toolbar.
On Windows 8 or 10, you can also click Open Control Panel, but the toolbar has been replaced with the ribbon found in Office 2010.
Third party program
If the volume icon in Windows 10 does not work at an enviable frequency, then I can recommend that you install a third-party program regulator. For example, I liked the “Volume 2” program. You can download it from here. and it is installed as easily as any other program.
After installation, you can immediately go into the settings and do everything for yourself, as you like.
The program itself is not difficult to use. After launch, a new icon will appear in the notification area, clicking on which you can adjust the volume. over, it is synchronized with your standard volume. Therefore, when you change the sound in Volume 2, then the standard system sound itself will increase.
Another handy feature is that you can adjust the sound using the mouse wheel. To do this, you just have to move your mouse cursor to the very bottom where the taskbar is. After that, just start turning the mouse wheel up and down.
The easiest way
The first thing that comes to mind is a simple restart of the computer. And in principle, this is the right decision. After this manipulation, everything is restored and works as it should. But this method is not the fastest. Think for yourself that you can lose a few minutes of time while rebooting. Yes, and you will have to stop all your current work. There is a way much faster and easier.
If such an incident happens to a friend, then a simple reboot of the explorer helps me. It is very easy to do this:
- Press the good old ALTCTRLDEL key combination and select the “Task Manager” item. Alternatively, you can make it even easier by pressing the key combination CTRLSHIFT`ESC. Then you will immediately be taken to the dispatcher.
- Next, we are looking for the section “Windows Processes” and in it we find the item “Explorer”.
- Now, click on “Explorer” with the right mouse button and select “Restart”.
After that, the explorer will reboot without touching your main processes, and the volume icon will become active.
What to do if the volume icon on the taskbar does not work in Windows 10
Hello everyone, my dear friends and blog guests. Today I would like to tell you what to do if the volume icon in Windows 10 on the taskbar does not work. over, with the sound itself, everything is in order and it can even be adjusted using hot keys, but the regulator in the notification area does not fuss. As it turned out, this problem happens quite often among users of the Windows operating system. So I will try to give you some solutions.
And if you delve into the settings, then you can do everything for yourself so cool that you will completely forget about the standard volume control. In order to enter the program settings, click on the icon in the notification area and select “Volume2”, which is located above all and is marked in bold. Or you can just double-click on the program icon.
It is not difficult to understand the settings themselves, since everything is written in understandable language.
The only thing I would still mention is the hotkeys. You can assign them yourself. To do this, find the “Hot Keys” tab and click on the “Add” button. After that, select the desired key combination itself (be sure to use the SHIFT, ALT or CTRL keys). By the way, in addition to creating several key combinations, you can configure everything to press just one button. But you can only use the keys from the numeric keypad (NUM0. NUM9).
Well, if you look at the possible events, then you can put on the hotkeys not only decrease or increase the sound, but also much more. For example, you can set the sound value at once to 10, 20, 30 and more percent. Alternatively, you can turn the sound on and off at the touch of a button. Very comfortably.
Therefore, even if the standard volume icon turns off for you, the software solution will always help you. This way you don’t even have to restart anything. You can safely continue to work without any problems.
Among other things, I recommend that you install the Sound Booster program. This is, of course, just a regulator, it’s a volume amplifier. Especially often, an amplifier is needed on laptops. You can read more about sound amplification in my article.
Well, that’s all for me. I hope you enjoyed my article and was useful to you. If so, be sure to subscribe to my blog on social networks so as not to miss the release of new articles. I look forward to seeing you again. Good luck to you. Bye Bye!
