How To Cancel Printing On The Printer

In order to print a document, you need to send a request to the printer. After that, the file becomes queued and waits until the device starts working with it. But in such a process there is no guarantee that the file will not get mixed up or that it will be longer than expected. In this case, it remains only for an emergency stop printing.

Canceling Printing from the Printer

How do I cancel printing if the printer has already started? It turns out there are many ways. Here is the SIMplest one that helps in a matter of minutes, to a rather complicated one, which may not have time to implement. One way or another, you need to consider each of the options in order to have an idea of all the available options.

View the queue for the “Control Panel”

Quite a primitive method, relevant if there are several documents in the queue, one of which does not need to be printed.

  • First, go to the “Start” menu in which we find the “Devices and Printers” section. Making a single click.

Next, a list of connected and previously used printers appears. If the work is done in an office, it is important to know exactly which device the file was sent to. If the entire procedure takes place at home, the active printer will most likely be marked with a check mark as Default.

Now you need to click on the active PCM printer. In the context menu, select “View print queue”.

  • Immediately it is worth noting that if you want to stop all printing, and not just one file, then in the window with the list of files you need to click on “Printer”, and then on “Clear print queue”.
  • Thus, we have covered one of the easiest ways to stop printing on any printer.

    Reboot the system process

Despite the rather complex name, this method of stopping printing can be a great option for someone who needs to do it quickly. True, quite often they use it only in situations where the first option cannot help.

    • First, you need to launch a special Run window. This can be done through the “Start” menu, or using the hotkeys “WinR”.
    • In the window that appears, you need to type the command to start all relevant services. It looks like this: services.Msc. After that press Enter or the “OK” button.

In the window that appears, there will be a huge number of various services. Among this list, we are only interested in “Print Manager”. Click on it with the right mouse button and select “restart”.

It is not necessary to stop the process, as later problems with printing documents may arise.

  • This option can stop printing in a matter of seconds. However, all content will be removed from the queue, so later, after troubleshooting or amending a text document, you will have to manually resume the procedure.
  • As a result, it can be noted that the considered method quite effectively fulfills the user’s need to stop the printing process. In addition, it does not take much action and time.

    Manual removal

All files that are sent to print are transferred to the local memory of the printer. Naturally, it also has its own location, where you can get to in order to remove all documents from the queue, including the one with which the device is working right now.

    • We follow the path C: \ Windows \ System32 \ Spool \.
    • In this directory we are interested in the “Printers” folder. It contains information about the documents to be printed.
  • To stop printing, just delete the entire contents of this folder in any way convenient for you.
  • It is important to consider only that all other files will be permanently removed from the queue. You need to think about this if work is done in a large office.

In the end, we have analyzed 3 ways to quickly and easily stop printing on any printer. It is recommended to start with the first one, since using it, even a beginner does NOT risk doing wrong actions, which will entail consequences.

    other methods

These two methods are not the only way to stop unwanted printing. There are other, less requested options to stop what the printer is printing. However, it is worth considering them in more detail, so that you can use them at any time.

How to cancel printing on the printer?

While working with a computer, situations often arise when you need to stop printing sent to the printer. For example, you might want to stop printing a wrongly selected document, unformatted text, or an unprocessed image. In order not to waste her sheets and ink, you first need to remove the paper from the tray, and then cancel the job. It is also common for the printer to stop responding to commands while printing multiple documents and the process freezes. You can correct the situation if you learn to cancel the command to output a document, text or image to a material medium.

    Delete temporary folder

When a task arrives at the printer, according to which it is required to print documents, temporary files are generated within the system. They contain information that is required for the operation. If you manually clear the folder of files, then you can reset the task and stop the process. It is recommended that you exit the Print Manager before starting cleaning. This can be done in the computer settings. The service can only be started again after the files have been removed from the folder. You can manually clear the contents of the temporary folder as follows.

    • Enter the path C: \ Windows \ System32 \ Spool \. The first letter means the name of the system disk, so you should indicate the one on which the computer’s operating system is installed.
    • Delete the contents of the directory named Printers. It is worth Note that the directory itself does not need to be deleted.

    Command line

The process of stopping printing files can be SIMplified if desired. In this case, you do NOT have to do anything manually, just open the command line on the computer. However, this is only suitable for those running under an administrator account. The task is done as follows.

    • The user launches a command timeline with extended rights. You can use any available method to start. These include calling the command line through the context menu “Start”. You can also press RMB and select the appropriate command term, which will indicate administrator rights.
    • In the dropped out terminal, the owner of the computer sets the command net stop spooler. Next, you need to confirm the completion of the task using the enter key. This will pause the print manager.
    • The third step is to enter two additional commands: del% systemroot% \ system32 \ spool \ printers \. Shd \ F \ S \ Q and del% systemroot% \ system32 \ spool \ printers \. Spl \ F \ S \ Q. With their help it will be possible to clear the temporary folder in which files for sending to print are stored. They have an extension. Shd. Spl. The introduction of Special commands will allow you to remove the task assigned to the equipment.

View the queue for the “Control Panel

One of the popular options for clearing the print queue involves using the Control Panel. The method is in demand among most Windows users, while it can be applied regardless of the operating system version or printer model. It is noteworthy that Windows 10 users cannot find a panel with this name. This is explained by the fact that the company renamed it to “Parameters”. At the same time, almost all functions and capabilities were left, although, for example, cleaning the print queue will need to be looked for.

You can go to the desired window in two ways.

    • Open the context menu “Start”.
    • Use system search.
    • Use the WinR keyboard shortcut.

Any of THESE methods will open the control panel to the user. Next, you need the following.

    • Open the “Devices and Printers” section.
    • Select the printer to print to.
    • Double-click to open the main information window. The same window will appear if you name the printer with the right mouse button.
    • Select an object that needs to be removed from the print queue.
    • Press RMB and select cancel the action in the menu that appears. Another way is to select the object and press the del key.

If you want to reset all items that are in the queue, then you should click on the printer, which is located on the top pane of the list, and then select the function to clear the print queue. When all actions are done, the list will be cleared. After that, you can start performing new tasks.

    Reboot the system process

This option is suitable for those who urgently need to cancel the assignment. However, it should be noted that this method is NOT very popular. Many people prefer to stop the printer in the settings and resort to restarting only if nothing has worked out. In this case, to clear the printer’s print queue, you need the following.

    • Open the “Run” section. To do this, press the WinR key combination or use the Start context menu.
    • Type the command services. Msc.
    • Confirm command input.
    • View the Services window and find the Print Manager section. You need to click on it RMB.
    • In the menu that opens, select the “restart” option.

It is worth noting that the menu contains the option to stop the service. It is not necessary to press this option, it is necessary to restart the system. The advantage of the method is that it quickly copes with the task. The print is quickly removed, while completely disappearing all documents from the list, which goes to the printer for printing.

Less overload is the inability to select certain files to cancel printing. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to this moment when you want to use this method. Another option for overloading the system involves stopping the “Print Manager” by pressing RMB and selecting the “Stop” function. This additionally clears the printer folder and restarts the device operation service.

    Bat file

If the user often interferes with the printing process, delete a huge number of files, a systematic problem with the printer may occur, which will gradually begin to display errors when outputting documents. Usually the problem arises from incorrect operation of drivers.

In this case, it is recommended:

    • Check for driver updates for printing equipment;
    • Update old drivers if new versions are available;
    • Reinstall drivers if hardware stops responding to commands.

Regarding the last point, it is worth noting that reinstallation can be performed either manually or using special software. If it is not possible to install the drivers, you can use a temporary solution to the problem. To do this, you need to create a file with the extension. Bat. This can be done as follows.

    • Open notepad to create a text file.
    • Write in it the familiar 4 commands that were described in the previous section. They will cause the “Print Manager” to stop, delete files with certain extensions from the Printers directory and activate the required service.
    • Save file.

How to clear the print queue on the printer, see.

    Stopping the print service

    • Open the Windows services control window through “Start” or in any other way known to you.
    • Find the Print Manager service. Stop it by pressing button 1 at the top of the window.
    • Empty the Printers folder. This step is detailed in the next section.
    • Start the service via button 2 in the main menu of the snap.

    Clearing the queue

The easiest and most logical way to fix the problem is to clear the print queue. Experts recommend using this method of cancellation. There are two ways to clear the queue.

    • Via the printer icon in the Windows tray. Unfortunately, not all printers are equipped with this function.
    • Using the control panel. Longer option.

    Option 1.

In the lower right corner of the Windows desktop, click on the small triangle and among the icons we find the printer icon. Click on it with the right key, select our model. The properties window will open. In the top menu, expanding the first tab and click on the line “Clear queue”.

    Option 2.

In the absence of the desired shortcut in the tray, you can get to the properties in the second way. In the command line or through the application quick launch form (WindowsR), run the control printers command. In the list we find our printing apparatus. Double click to enter its settings. Click on the “Show Queue” shortcut. Through the “Printer” menu from above, open the list and select “Clear” or “Suspend”, depending on your current need

    Clearing the Printers folder

The system has a special folder in which Windows stores information about printed documents and files in a special format. This folder is called “Printers”. It is located in the system directory at C: WindowsSystem32Spool. If your operating system is not installed on drive C, then you need to specify the correct location drive. We delete all the files that you see there. Their extension will be spl or shd.

    Button on the printer body

The ideal option is to have a special undo button on the body of the device itself, which also stops the printing process. Clicking on it will immediately cancel the job from the computer to print documents from the queue. Typically, this button is marked in red with the words “Cancel” or SIMply “C”. It is easy to find, since it is always in a conspicuous place near the copy start button.

    Power off

This is the most radical option and it is worth resorting to its use only in the most urgent situations. It carries some risks.

    • Paper Jams or Jams Inside the Printer.
    • Device breakdown.

It is recommended to disconnect from the network as a final event after performing one of the standard printing cancellation methods. You need to turn it off for a while to give the device time to clean its built-in RAM.

Situations in which you urgently need to stop printing sent to the printer happen often. This is an erroneously opened file, and jammed paper, and errors in the document. The printed version becomes SIMply unusable. Therefore, so that the task does NOT go “idle”, paper and ink (toner) are not wasted, it would be most logical to stop the work. Then the knowledge of how to cancel printing on the printer will be useful.

    Stop typing immediately

You can quickly cancel the execution of the printing mission assigned to the technology manually. for this it is enough to turn off the power of the equipment. In different devices, this button may be in different places (for example, in a Samsung printer it can be found on the back panel).

But it is not recommended to use this opportunity: nevertheless, there is interference in the operation of a complex apparatus. Such Incorrect “behavior” can lead to corresponding consequences, and the least of them. paper jams and the device will have to be disassembled.

    Command line

All actions described in the top two sections can be performed through the command term. With certain knowledge, this is not difficult at all. We do this:

    • Open the command term with administrator rights via “Start”.
    • To stop the server enter net stop spooler.
    • Empty your assignments folder. Enter in turn del% systemroot% system32spoolprinters.Shd and SIMilarly for spl files.
    • Start the print manager with the command net start spooler.

    4) In this folder, you must delete all files with the.SPL and.SHD extensions (on my computers, this folder is generally empty.).

    This folder is empty

    5) Turn on the “Print Manager” service (which was previously disabled) and check the operation of the printer. The problem must be resolved.

    Using the command line

In some cases, the previous methods may NOT work, for example, when the conductor freezes. In this case, everything can be done on the command line in several steps.

    1) The first thing that needs to be done is to open the command term as administrator. To do this, open the Task Manager (shortcut CtrlAltDel or CtrlShiftEsc) and click “File / New Task”. Enter the CMD command and check the box that the task must be on behalf of the administrator. Example below.

    Run command line as administrator

    2) Then enter the command net stop spooler and press Enter. The print service must be stopped (see example below).

    Print service stopped

    3) Then enter two commands in sequence:

    • Del% systemroot% system32spoolprinters.Shd
    • Del% systemroot% system32spoolprinters.Spl

After entering each. press Enter. Thanks to these commands, temporary files for printing will be removed from the PRINTERS system folder (they are exactly what are present in the print queue).

Temporary files sent to print have been deleted

Please note that after entering each command, nothing should be written in response (this means that the command was completed successfully).

    4) Next, start the print service by entering the command net start spooler.

When printing various documents on the printer, abnormal situations may arise in which you need to stop or completely cancel the entire process. This can be a paper jam in the printer, accidentally sending an unnecessary document to print, detecting errors in the document during printing, etc. Whatever the reason, in any case, it is advisable to stop printing as soon as possible in order to avoid unnecessary waste of paper, as well as ink or printer toner.

How to cancel printing on a printer The principle of canceling printing is the same in all versions of Windows operating systems and includes the following steps.

    • In the desktop toolbar, usually located in the lower right corner of your screen, look for the printer icon. In operating systems starting with Windows 7, icons are grouped and minimized from the visible part of the screen to save space. To access them expand the hidden icons, clicked on the triangle symbol in the panel.
    • Right-click on the printer icon and select the printer by its name in the menu that opens.
    • The Print Manager window will open, displaying all the documents that have been queued for printing. To cancel a separately taken document select its due date and press the Delete or Del key.
    • To completely delete all print jobs, select the Printers section in the manager and select the Clear print queue item in the list that appears.
    • In some cases, it may require restarting the system process responsible for printing in the operating system. To restart, press the Win R key combination to open the system command entry window (Win is a key with the Windows logo). Enter the command services.Msc into the line and press the Enter key on your keyboard.
    • In the window that opens, find the service called Print Manager and click the restart service link.

A print job cannot stop instantly, since all modern printers have built-in RAM, which serves for intermediate storage of documents sent for printing. Even if you canceled printing on the computer itself, the printer may continue to print a document from its RAM.

You can immediately stop this process only by turning off the power of the printer, which on a working device can lead to paper jams and in general is NOT a correct shutdown of a complex electrical device.

Therefore, I cannot recommend turning off the power of a working printer, but you should be aware of such an opportunity that you can sometimes use.

Cancellation of printing in different versions of Windows operating systems works with some delay. It may seem that printing cancellation, despite the commands entered in the manager, does not occur, and the printer continues to print the already canceled document. But after completing all the steps listed in the article, you will definitely cancel the printing of the document.

Canceling the Printing of Documents on the Printer

How to cancel a process from a computer

Let’s consider how to shoot the task directly from a PC (laptop) for any SIMilar device (from Canon to HP). The commands will be the same for all kinds of Windows OS. To run them on a computer, do the following.

    • On the toolbar in the lower right corner of the desktop there is an icon with the designation of the printer. Sometimes it is conditionally invisible (collapsed). for visualization it will be enough to click on the triangular symbol (located in the same location).
    • Right-click on the printer icon. A menu will open in which it remains to select the name of the device.
    • The program will open a dispatch window, it will display all the documents in the queue. If you want to remove one of the sent files in the print queue, the line with it is highlighted and the Delete button is pressed.
    • Need to remove all quests? To do this, in the “Printer” section of the pop-up window, select the “Clear print queue” command.

Sometimes these combinations DO NOT work. in this case, you will need to completely reset and restart everything you started. Start by pressing the WinR keys together. In the dialog line that appears, enter the services.Msc command and press “Enter” (Enter). Next, it will remain in the new window that opens to find and start the “Print Manager” process.

    Possible problems

After completing all the above steps, users should understand: an instant stop of the printing process will NOT occur. This circumstance is due to the fact that the printing device has RAM. built-in random access memory. It is a kind of buffer in order to store incoming documents (print queues). Therefore, for some time after giving the cancel command, the technician is still able to continue to work.

Another prerequisite for a delay in command execution is that some versions of operating systems run with delay. However, it is not so significant: it is better to follow all the indicated instructions and complete the work correctly, than then eliminate unpleasant consequences with the printer.
