Open the Operation Mode menu, select the AP Client Router operation mode and press the Save button.

connect, printer, access, point

Go to the Network → WAN menu and indicate how TP-Link 5210G will receive network settings from a Wi-Fi point. Usually settings are assigned via DHCP, so select Dynamic IP and click Save.

If the provider blocks access to the Wi-Fi point by its MAC address, go to the Network → MAC Clone menu and in the WAN MAC Address field: specify the allowed MAC address.

Open the DHCP menu and check that DHCP Server is enabled. Enable must be selected and the Start IP Address and End IP Address fields indicate the range of IP addresses that will be allocated to computers connected via a cable from the LAN port of the 5210G.

Go to the Wireless → Wireless Mode menu, select the Client operating mode and press the Survey button.

Find the necessary Wi-Fi point in the list and click Connect.

In the Client field, the name of the point (SSID) to which we will connect and its MAC address (MAC of AP) will appear. After that, click the Save button at the bottom of the page.

Enter the password for accessing the Wi-Fi access point, if any. Go to the Wireless → Security Settings menu and specify the security parameters, as on the Wi-Fi point:

  • Version: select the encryption version. We used WPA2-PSK.
  • Encryption: encryption aLGorithm. We chose Automatic.
  • PSK Passphrase: in this field, specify the password to access the access point at least 8 characters and press the Save button to save the settings

After the completed steps, go to the Status menu and check that the TP-Link 5210G is connected to the access point. The SSID field should be the name of the point you connected to. When you click on the Refresh button, the channel numbers in the Channel field should not change. If the channel numbers change, then you have entered the wrong security parameters (password for the access point or encryption parameters). The WAN field will show the network settings that were automatically assigned to the 5210G via DHCP.

Now you can connect TP-Link 5210G to the switch and computers connected via cable will have Internet access.

Configuring the network card to receive automatic settings

Regardless of which client mode you configured the TP-Link 5210G in, now we need to change the settings of the computer’s network card so that it receives the settings automatically via DHCP.

Configuring 5210G Connection to Wi-Fi Access Point

TP-Link TL-WA5210G can be configured as a Wi-Fi access point client in two modes:

AP Client Router. this mode is used when you need to connect to an access point and hide the subnet behind it. For example, you can connect to the provider’s base Wi-Fi station, turn on the 5210G point in the switch and distribute the Internet to other computers via cable. At the same time, the provider will not know that there are more computers behind your point, and the 5210G will act as a gateway to the Internet. In this mode, a DHCP server is configured on the 5210G access point, and it will distribute network settings to computers in its subnet.

AP Client Bridge. you will not find the name of this mode in the settings of the 5210G point, but this is what is meant when you want to “transparently” connect to the provider. In this mode, the 5210G transparently passes traffic from computers located behind the point to the provider’s equipment. The provider sees all connected computers and distributes network settings to them from its DHCP server. If the provider will not block access of computers to the network, then it is preferable to use this mode.

Let’s start connecting TP-Link TL-WA5210G to a Wi-Fi access point.

Open Internet Explorer (or another browser) and enter the address

Switching from landline Internet to 3G / 4G is a matter of a couple of minutes. It is enough to have an agreement with a mobile operator (access to the global web is now included in almost any tariff plan) and a certain amount on the balance. Well, the mobile phone itself, which will be the connection point.

Let’s talk how to connect the Internet to a computer using an Android smartphone as a modem.

Connect via USB

To connect the Internet to a computer, whatever OS is installed on your smartphone, using a USB cable we connect the switched on phone to a PC / laptop. With the correct settings of the mobile phone, after installing the drivers, the operating system itself identifies it as a modem.

PC / laptop setup

To connect to the telephone Internet via a computer in Windows OS, first of all, you need to install drivers on your phone. They can be bundled on a disk that came with the gadget. If the disc was not available, the software can be downloaded on the Internet from the manufacturer’s website.

  • As in the previous method, all connection settings are made through the “Network and Sharing Center”.
  • Go to the subsection “Local Area Connection”.
  • As in the previous method, we check the correctness of the automatic parameters setting.

To connect an Android smartphone to a MacBook, you need to download and install a driver. To do this, simply follow the instructions on the screen. If everything is configured correctly, then your gadget will see the modem and connect to the network.

Windows Phone

Before setting up an access point, you need to connect your phone to the Internet. The corresponding icon will appear in the “Control Panel”.

How to share a printer in Windows 10

Windows 10’s network discovery features help you share content and media with local computers, unlock hardware, and even set up wireless and “shared” document printing. How everything works and where to set the necessary options. details below.

Setting methods

You can activate network discovery and open access to the printer in Windows 10 both through the “Settings” of the operating system, and in the “Control Panel”. The methods are largely similar. the difference lies only in some sections of the menu, between which you have to navigate. The alternative is PowerShell. The implementation of the plan will take even less time, because you need to enter a couple of commands and fix the result with the Enter button. details about each of the methods are below.

Through the “Parameters” of the system

Opening the shared access to the printer in Windows 10 will help the “Settings” section, called through “Start”. In the list that appears, you need the category “Devices”.

Next. go to “Printers and Scanners”, select equipment that will have to be shared, call the “Control” menu (the corresponding item opens when you click on the desired item in the list).

In the “Control” you select “Printer properties”, and after that. the “Access” section, where you can configure network discovery parameters, as well as elements for local communication.

Of all the points, the important checkbox “Share this printer” and the filled text field “Resource name” (formally, no one bothers to enter what comes into your head. any combination of symbols will do: but it is better to achieve intuitiveness. indicate a name that is difficult to confuse and easy to decipher). But in some situations, the “Additional Drivers” tab is useful if the printer will have to be accessed by computers with different versions of the Windows operating system (for example, on architecture with 32 and 64 bits).

Changes are applied by clicking the “OK” button. Reboot your computer. no need.

In the “Control Panel

An alternative way to get to the properties of faxes, MFPs and other equipment is associated with the “Control Panel”, available in Windows 10 and opened through the search in the Start menu.

As in the case with the “Parameters”, you must select the thematic section. “Viewing devices and printers”. And after that. in the list that appears. right-click and select “Printer Properties”.

It is already known how to proceed further: open the “Access” tab, specify a name, deal with the drivers. The final touch is to check if there are any problems with detection.

Using PowerShell

In addition to the “Control Panel” and “Settings” in Windows 10, PowerShell, a special tool for automating the operating system from Microsoft, will help to share the printer on the network. Before interacting with the command line, you will have to open the “Start” menu, use the search and select the “Run as administrator” item in the context menu.

Next, you have to display a list of printers, faxes and MFPs available in Windows using the Get-Printer | Format-Table Name, ShareName, Shared.

Among the results that appear, you need to find the equipment that you want to share (the names are listed in the Name column, and the sharing status is displayed under the Shared heading) and then enter a command of the following type: Set-Printer.Name “current printer name from the list”.Shared True.ShareName “new common name for equipment”. It is important not to lose spaces and hyphens, keep the structure and add quotes correctly, otherwise the command will not work.

Network settings

Often times, sharing a printer to provide local access in Windows 10 isn’t enough. In addition to the parameters listed above, you will also have to set the correct detection parameters for the current network profile.

Settings are set in the “Network and Sharing Center” (the section is called through the “Settings” of the system, in the category “Network and Internet”).

Next. go to the sub-item “Additional parameters”.

The last step is to select a “home” or “private” network profile (the one that is used by default and therefore eliminates security problems) and activating the “Enable Sharing and Discovery” sliders.

Windows 10 Release 1803 must be configured to automatically start the Feature Discovery Resource Publishing service.

What is an access point?

Access point (AP). it is simply a wireless wired network “extender”, which is most often used in two ways:

Receives incoming Internet traffic over a cable and distributes over a wireless connection (dsotup point / base station mode).

Accepts incoming data over a wireless connection and transmits further over the cable (wireless client mode)

There is also an access point operating mode, in which it receives and transmits traffic over a wireless connection. repeater or repeater mode. It is preferable to use other modes, if possible, since with such a transfer the speed drops significantly.

In all these modes of operation, a classic access point simply broadcasts traffic. without any operations with it. If several devices are connected to the WI-FI point, then the bandwidth between them is divided equally, as in the simplest switch. The wired interface in indoor access points is usually limited to one LAN port.

Router and access point. what is the difference?

Router and access point. what is the difference between them? This is a frequent question of our clients, especially those purchasing equipment for home or office. We will try to answer it in this article.

Strictly speaking, a classic router and a classic access point cannot be compared. These devices have completely different purposes.

What is a router?

Router (router). it is a smarter device that not only receives and transmits data, but also redistributes it according to various established rules and executes given commands. He can:

  • route data packets (Internet traffic) between different networks and subnets;
  • assign IP addresses to computers and other devices that are connected to it;
  • provide their network protection (firewall);
  • limit traffic speed and much more. depending on the type and cost of the model.

Before the popularization of wireless technologies, routers were produced without WI-FI support. A classic router had only a wired interface and it would not have occurred to anyone to compare it with a WI-FI access point. And now multiport carrier-class models are produced without a radio module:

The confusion arose precisely when the routers were equipped with WI-FI transmitters, and, in fact, combined the functionality of a router and an access point in them. This gave rise to many modifications.

The most common question: “What is the difference between an access point and a router” arises in relation to access points for premises and inexpensive wireless routers for the SOHO segment. They differ little both in appearance and in cost. Compare:

From all of the above, a few simple key differences can be deduced:

  • Access point. it’s just an access point. WI-FI router. this is an access point, two in one.
  • WI-FI-router in the overwhelming majority of cases is intended for indoor use. Access points are very different. for indoor and outdoor use, for connecting several clients and for connecting one, with a built-in antenna and with the need to buy an antenna separately.
  • An indoor access point most often has only one port for connecting a cable. for incoming traffic. A wireless router usually has several ports so that devices can be connected via both a WI-FI connection and a network cable.

How a WI-FI router and an access point differ in practice?

The theory is, of course, good. But what are the specific opportunities offered by buying a Wi-Fi router? Is it worth paying more for it (if it is more expensive)?

As we discussed above, there is no point in talking about expensive carrier-grade routers. Let’s compare solutions for home and office.

WI-FI router Access point
By connecting the router first to the provider’s cable and setting it up once, you do not have to configure separately each computer or laptop connected after it in the home / office network. The device located in the network after the access point will need to enter the provider’s settings.
You can easily organize a home network: the router will act as a dhcp server, distribute IP addresses within the network, all you need to do is connect the devices to the configured router. he will do the rest himself. You will have to tinker with the settings of the home network, including, possibly, obtaining additional IP addresses from the provider.
The router has the functionality of a firewall, a built-in firewall, which means it provides improved network protection. The access point does not have any protective functionality, except for the simplest traffic encryption.
If you need a high connection speed for some tasks. you can always connect your computer to the router using a network cable and get the maximum speed that the provider gives. Most access points do not have a wired interface for transmitting data to end devices, and the wireless connection speed is not suitable for all tasks.
For some highly specialized programs / interfaces, it may be necessary to configure port forwarding on the router, since the internal IP address of the devices is not available “outside” from the router subnet. The access point transparently broadcasts traffic, which is good for some highly specialized tasks. The IP address of the end device is accessible from the outside without additional settings.

Output. In most cases, to distribute the Internet to several home devices. computer, laptop, smartphone. it is better to purchase a WI-FI router and connect the provider’s cable to it. Especially if the router is inexpensive.

For other purposes: receiving traffic from the provider over a wireless connection, organizing a seamless WI-FI network in the office, HotSpot in a cafe or hotel. you need an access point. If you need advice, we will help you find a solution for each specific task.
