If you do not need the Internet on the router, you can skip this step. But usually people just need it. Remember that there is a special socket for this. WAN or INTERNET. You need to connect exactly there!
After connecting this wire, another indicator of the external network usually lights up.
How to connect a router to a computer: the most complete instruction
Hello! Today I will show you how to connect a Wi-Fi router to anything in your home. But in the SIMplest case, let’s start with a computer. this is often used, and it’s more convenient to set up on a computer than on a phone. There is a particular difference in the wire connection between a computer and a laptop. everything is the same. Let’s start already.
The aLGorithm for connecting a router of any model is the same. you will not have any questions. Another thing is the internal settings of the router, which vary from model to model. For configuration details, I recommend looking for the appropriate article for your router on our website. The same article will be about the connection process itself with small references to further actions.
It will not be difficult to find. all ports look the same, because They follow one standard. RJ-45:
The same is usually found on laptops. After connecting, the last indicator of interest to us should light up on the router. LAN networks.
As a result, the ports should be clogged something like this:
It is very difficult to be mistaken. We must do everything right the first time. All! You don’t need to connect anything else here, and you can proceed to setting up.
All steps are very SIMple, this one is NOT an exception. We turn on the plug into the power socket on the router and connect the adapter itself to the power supply. At least some indicators on the router should light up (usually the power and Wi-Fi lights are blinking).
If nothing is on, we check the presence of current. Can it be connected badly? Right there? Is the surge protector enabled, if any? And the most interesting thing. maybe there is also a button on the back of the router? Don’t forget to turn it on too.
After this stage, the router should “come to life”. We proceed to further connection.
So we come to the topic of our article. Let’s take a look at the back panel of the average router in the world:
Pay attention to the 3 main places for us:
- LAN ports. highlighted in blue, but often also yellow. The key difference is that they are signed as LAN, and usually there are several of the same color. Ports are used to connect devices on your home LAN. a computer or laptop.
- INTERNET or WAN port. external network. This is where your provider’s cable comes in. As a rule, this port is one, and it is highlighted in a Separate color (in most cases, blue, the picture is selected for contrast).
- Nutrition. You cannot confuse it with anything, through it you will connect the router to the power supply. There is also a separate button for turning on, if there is one, too Do not forget to turn on.
Final connection diagram:
- Turn on the power
- Connect WAN
- Connect LAN
Setup. very brief
Why very briefly? Because the setup process itself differs from router to router. So if something is not clear. write in the comments, or rather go to the article on setting up your router model on our website. everything will be there in detail and with all the nuances. Below I give a universal aLGorithm for all models.
Step 1. entering the panel
First you need to enter the web configurator. The best way is to look under the router and on the stickers see the actual data for entering the control panel, username and password. It looks like this:
If all else fails, go to the following links, one of them should display a login and password entry window:
Login and password look at the same stickers, but usually they are standard almost everywhere admin and admin.
Step 2. setting up the internet
And this is where the big discrepancies begin. Once you got into the configuration, look for the setup wizard. He will guide you through the steps and set everything up himself. What is important here is to find an agreement with your provider, where the login and password from the Internet itself go. During the configuration process, you will have to drive them in here. As a result, the router should connect to the Internet.
The entire aLGorithm of interaction with the new router I SVEL to the following steps:
- Installation. we place it in the apartment.
- Connection. this is what our article is about, we will do everything ourselves.
- Setup. enter settings, internet, Wi-Fi, passwords.
Now let’s go over each step briefly, focusing on the connection process. And for those who do not like to read, there is cool on the topic:
Configuring client equipment
It is immediately necessary to make a note about the IP addresses used. In the case of Wi-Fi or LAN-connection to the router, the device address is given either by itself, or entered manually into the very configuration of the printing device. To configure the printer through a router to communicate with a computer when connected using USB, the addresses of the switch itself are applied directly. The step-by-step instructions will further refer to the use of any of the named options in Windows 10.
So, let’s take a look at an easier way to connect a network printer when it is connected to a router via LAN or Wi-Fi in steps. The difference with this particular method is that the printer will be visible directly in the network environment. The sequence of actions will be as follows:
- Open Start Menu.
- On the left there will be an image of a gear, click on it.
- Go to the item “Devices”.
- Next on the left, select “Printers and Scanners”.
- On the page that opens, on the right, select “Add a printer or scanner”.
- If the searched device does not appear in the list that opens, then click “The required printer is not in the list”.
- In the next window, find “Browse” and select the required device.
- Then the classically “Next”. “Next”. Agree to the driver’s request and indicate their location. In the event that Windows asks about using old versions or installing new ones with replacement, the last one is selected.
- The final page will ask you to make the device the default and print a test page.
In the event that the printer is connected to the router via USB, all points remain the same, with the exception of the sixth. It will expand a little:
- Here in the window, instead of the “Browse” button, select “Add a printer by its TCP / IP address or hostname”. Click “Next”.
- In the tab that opens, you need to specify the “TCP / IP device” and enter the IP-router in the “Name or IP-address” field. Repeat the same for “Port name”. Followed by “Next”.
- A choice of a specific port type will be given. Check the box “Special”, click “Options”.
- In the window that opens, select “LPR” instead of “Raw” with the switch and set the name of the queue using any text without spaces. Click “OK”.
- After doing everything as described earlier from point 7 of the instructions for further installing the drivers.
That’s actually the whole setup of a network printer through a router.
There are only three ways to connect your printer via a Wi-Fi router. They all depend on the end capabilities of both devices. Among them are used: the wireless connection itself, a network cable or USB. In general, the whole procedure can be divided into three stages: first. physical connection, then. verification and last. setting up client equipment. Consider first the first.
In fact, this method is even preferable. Fewer wires will be used, and it will be possible to move the printer further away from client equipment and place it in a more user-friendly location. After all, only physical access to a 220 V outlet will be sufficient.
If the printer and router are equipped with Wi-Fi and WPS, then the entire physical component of the connection will consist in pressing the WPS button on the router first, then the same on the printing device. Further, the “smart” technique will pick up the connection by itself, all that remains is to configure its connection to the computer. An example of the location of the WPS key on the printer is shown in the figure below.
In cases where the printer and router are equipped with Wi-Fi modules, but one or both of them cannot connect, the WPS setting is performed through the printer menu. In it, you need to find the wireless communication unit and manually configure the connection with the router by choosing a network and entering a password. You can SIMplify this option. for a short time physically connect the printer to the computer and perform a SIMilar operation through the service programs supplied on the disk with the device, with the possibility of subsequent startup in an offline mode.
How to properly connect a printer via a Wi-Fi router
Most private traders and almost all organizations that use computer technology have such a convenient device as a printer. It is indispensable when you need to transfer text or a picture from the screen to a physical medium. paper. Speed of work, quality. all these are positive characteristics of the printer. But it also has one big drawback. the space it takes on the table or next to it. Indeed, in essence, you cannot move the connecting wire further to the Ego’s computer. a constant connection is required to be able to use the functions of the device. There are, of course, network printers or even those equipped with wireless communication modules. But their price and most importantly reliability leave much to be desired.
There is a way out, for example, it is possible to connect a printer via a router. Yes, using the same device that unites computers into a single network, and for home users it often serves as a bridge between personal “smart” household appliances and the Internet. An example of combining home or office devices is located in the figure below.
Of course, we will talk further about modern printers equipped with a USB input and corresponding routers, which, in addition to having a SIMilar connector, also “understand” what exactly is included in them. Although having this type of connectivity already indicates the required functionality. As a last resort, you can use third-party router firmware, for example, DD-WRT, Tomato, OpenWRT or SIMilar. The issue of connecting a printer, equipping with a wireless module or classic Wi-Fi LAN with the ability to print to it over a shared network will also be discussed.
Users of old printers shouldn’t be upset either. There are adapters for the LPT connector that provide communication between it and the USB port of the router. The software layer which quite “understands” that a printer is connected to it via USB emulation. The figure below shows an example of a network where a printer is used via a router.
Checking the connection
Before proceeding directly to setting up printing from a computer, you need to check if the router sees the same device. Basically, at this stage, regardless of how the printer is physically connected to the router, via USB, Wi-Fi or LAN, the switch should show its presence on the network. To check, you need to complete the procedure for entering the settings of the router, which classically occurs through a regular browser. Let’s consider this process step by step:
- The browser opens.
- Enter the information listed in the documentation for the router or on its label. Naturally, this is relevant if the settings did not change much by the user from those set at the factory. In the specified locations, you can find the device’s network address, default username and password. For example, most routers use the path http://192.168.0.1. The standard password and username are “admin” and “admin”, typed without quotes and in small letters at the request that opens after entering the address into the browser. For example, so the entry into the settings of the TP-Link router will be carried out as follows, as shown in the figure below.
- After entering, you will be interested in the Network Map item of the router menu. Users get into it either immediately after logging in, or the link there will be located on the first screen. On the page that opens, the connected printer will be displayed among other devices. However, there is one caveat. with a USB connection, it can be indicated as “Unknow device” (unknown device). Don’t let this fact bother you. Connection to clients will still be carried out using the control programs of the printer itself, and here you only need to determine the fact of its presence on the network. The figure below shows the “Network Map” of an ASUS router with a Samsung ML-1250 printer connected via USB.
- For those cases when it is not displayed in the “network map”, it is worth focusing on the issued device address and the presence of a tight physical connection to the router in case of using a USB cable.
- Another option, when the printer itself is connected via LAN (RJ-45) or Wi-Fi, but is not visible by the router, then you should look for it and SIMply through the “Network Neighborhood” of the computer. It can show up there even without defining a “network map” in the list.
In the context of a Wi-Fi router, the possibility of using the printer in conjunction with Android devices looks interesting. For example, phones or tablets. In them, the connection of the printing device can be found in the standard “Play Market” by selecting the program of the manufacturer, whose printer, and following the recommendations for its setup. The printing itself is performed within the capabilities of the third-party software itself.
Via USB cable
It is important to have a USB port in the router in order to connect the printer to the router. Unfortunately, some variants of the latter do not have it.
As for the procedure itself, the classic method of connecting devices is used: the USB cable from the printing device is connected to the router. This essentially completes the connection. Then only the final setting is made on the client side. Below will be clearly presented a printer connected to the router via USB.
Network connection via LAN
Another SIMple way is how to connect a printer through a router. You don’t even need Wi-Fi for this. The only requirement is that the printer has an RJ-45 network connector, in Common Speech “LAN”. The method is convenient for a SIMpler configuration of the equipment, because in its case the printer receives a full-fledged status of a network device, programmatically torn off from the filling of the router itself, which in some cases gives a significant gain. A printer with a LAN connector may look like the following figure.
So, here the whole procedure for combining a printing device and a common network consists in bundling one of the “LAN” connectors of the switch with a UDP network cable and, SIMilarly, the printer port.
As for obtaining the address of the location in the total volume of devices, it will most likely be issued automatically. Otherwise, you need to manually assign it through the printer menu.
Printing from iPhone and iPad
Unlike the previous case, when using Android, this requires the printer to support AirPrint technology. The configuration is performed automatically if the printing device is equipped with it and is on the same network as a tablet or mobile phone. Printing is performed by a standard program, by selecting options, specifying the required printer, ready to receive an image and send data to it.
How to install a printer in Windows 10
As a result of a global update initiated by Microsoft, the new operating system Windows 10 was born. The new operating system added both the classic system management model and a new one that duplicates and replaces it.
This approach has made it much more difficult for PC users to install peripheral devices, especially printers. According to the developers from Microsoft, this approach to system management should make it much easier to manage and configure. To help the user understand the installation of printing devices, we have prepared a material in which we will consider setting them up in Windows 10.
What is virtual printer in Windows 10
Many users on Windows 10 PCs have come across a printer called “Microsoft Print to PDF”. This printer is virtual, that is, software, not physical. Its main function is to print to a PDF file. After printing any information on this virtual device, it will be saved to a PDF file. In some cases it is very convenient.
Let’s consider an example of printing a page from the Microsoft Edge browser. To do this, we will open a browser at www.Microsoft.com/ru-ru.
Now let’s go to browser settings and select “Print”.
This action will take us to the browser print page.
On this page, click the Print button. After that we will be transferred to the window for saving the printed information in PDF format.
The example shows that using a virtual printer from Microsoft, you can print any information, be it a browser or a text document. I would also like to note that if you want a virtual printer with advanced features, then you should use third-party virtual printing programs. The most functional virtual printing programs are PDFCreator and doPDF.
Setting up a printer in Windows 10
If you plug your old or new printer over USB into a Windows 10 computer, you’ll see how quickly the OS will set it up to work. Installation is carried out through a huge database of drivers that are preinstalled in the operating system, as well as through Windows Update.
If everything is clear with the installation via the USB interface, then what about the connection using a serial port, via a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth network. To deal with this task, we will consider an example in which we show how to install a printer via a USB cable.
For our example, we will take a new inkjet from Canon PIXMA G3400. A feature of this inkjet is that it can be connected to a PC via Wi-Fi wireless technology.
Now connect your PIXMA G3400 to a router on our local network. To do this, first of all, connect the printing device to the network. After that, press the Wi-Fi button, which is located on the control panel, and we will hold it until the orange indicator does NOT blink once. Immediately after the orange indicator blinks, the Wi-Fi indicator next to it starts blinking blue. This means the printer has entered the wireless network search mode.
Now connect the router to our printing device. To do this, we hold down the button on the device responsible for WPS and we will hold it until the Wi-Fi indicator on the printer stops blinking and remains blue. After THESE actions, our inkjet will connect to the wireless network.
For Windows 10 to see Printer PIXMA G3400, let’s move on to its settings. To do this, go to the “Start” menu on the “Settings” tab, which will open the operating system settings.
Now let’s go to the “Devices” section and click the “Add printer or scanner” button. After the search, the link “The required printer is not in the list” should appear, by which we will go.
In the wizard window that appears, select the item as shown in the image below.
Also at this stage, you can select the required method of connecting the device. Next, we will continue the wizard, how to start the search for our printer. In the search process, select the desired model of the printing device and continue the wizard.
The wizard will then begin the installation process. It will install the necessary drivers for the PIXMA G3400 and make it the first default in the system.
The example shows that any PC user can configure a wireless printer. In addition, setting up the wireless printer in the example is SIMilar to setting up models from other manufacturers. It is also worth noting that for each wireless printer there is a manual that describes in detail the installation process. The manual can be found with the printer or downloaded from the manufacturer’s website.
Installing a Printer Using the Driver Disc
As mentioned above, when you connect a printer via a USB cable, Windows 10 automatically finds a driver for almost any printer. But what to do in this situation if you bought a new printer and you need to connect it to a Windows 10 PC without Internet access.
Windows 10 installs drivers for new devices through Windows Update, so we will use the driver disc that came with the printer. For example, we will also select Printer Canon PIXMA G3400 and connect it to a computer running Windows 10 via USB.
Our next step will be to install the optical disc into the DVD drive and launch it. Launched the disc, we will get to the start window. In this window, click the Printer Setup button. Which will take us to the window where you need to accept the license agreement.
We accept the license agreement and proceed to the next step, in which I authorize the wizard to do everything.
In the next window, select the printer connection via USB.
After THESE actions, the installer will start installing the driver for the printing device. Finished driver installation, you will see a new Installed Canon PIXMA G3400 inkjet printer in the system.
The above example is quite SIMple and any PC user can figure it out. It is also worth noting that if your printer is old, then Windows 10 will easily find a driver for it automatically without an Internet connection.
From our article we can conclude that the developers from Microsoft did their best and made the operating system very user-friendly. Judge for yourself, from the examples considered it is clear that almost any user can cope with installing a wireless printer, and you do NOT have to mess around with setting up via the USB interface.
In addition, the new operating system has its own virtual printer, which can be very useful in some situations. After reading this material, our reader will understand that installing and configuring a printer in Windows 10 is not a difficult task.
Into a single whole
If the devices do not have the same connection interfaces or the router does not recognize your model, they can also be connected, but only through an intermediary. I will tell you what can be a mediator further.
How to print from Android and iOS mobile devices
Apple users are probably familiar with AirPrint, but it only supports very few hardware. To print on any printer, regardless of model, you just need to install a third-party application on your iPhone or iPad, for example:
The software is NOT free, but inexpensive. In addition to them, you can use mobile utilities for a specific brand of printer, created by the manufacturers themselves: Canon, Epson, HP, Brother, Dell, Samsung, Xerox, Ricoh, Lexmark, etc. By the way, such utilities are also available for Android.
Optimizing space: how to connect a printer via a Wi-Fi router
Of course, you cannot do without wires, but some of them can be safely removed. Why, for example, pull a cable from a printer to a PC, if you can send documents for printing by air? Today we’ll talk about how to connect a printer via a Wi-Fi router (router) to any device that supports wireless communication.
Direct USB connection
Most home segment printers have only a USB port for communication with the outside world. The router should have the same socket.
- Turn off the power of both devices, as a working router will most likely NOT be able to detect the printer.
- Connect the USB cable to the socket of the devices, then turn on the router and after a couple of minutes. the printer (this time must be withstood in order for the first one to boot up).
- Using a LAN port or wireless connection, connect the router to the computer through which you will perform the configuration.
- Go to the control panel of the router by entering in the address bar of the browser IP addresses 192.168.0.1 (used most often) or the one indicated on the label or in the instructions of the device.
- Log in, indicated the administrator login and password in the next window (the preset data for the first login is also indicated on the label attached to the bottom of the router).
- Make sure the router detects the printing device. If recognized correctly, it will appear in the “Network map” section.
Setting up printing on a computer
Now let’s move on to the main thing. setting up the wireless printing function on a PC. Let’s analyze it using the example of Windows 10.
- Launch the Settings application from the Start menu. Select the “Devices” section in the main window.
- From the list of equipment, select “Printers and scanners”. Click “Add”.
- Since the device is connected to a router and not to a PC, it will not be detected. Click the button “Required is not in the list”.
- In the “Search by second parameters” box, check “Add printer by TCP / IP address”.
- Next, select “TCP / IP” from the “Device Type” list. In the “Name or IP” field, enter the local network address of the router. the one you kill in the browser to enter the admin panel. You don’t need to write anything in the “Port name”. the same IP will be copied there. The checkbox “Poll the printer and find the driver automatically” must be unchecked.
- The installer will notify you that “this device was not found in the sets”. It should be so. In the “Device Type” section, select “Special” and click the “Options” button.
- In the settings of the standard port monitor, mark the LPR protocol and in the “Queue name” field, write any value.
- Now it’s the turn to install the print driver. Use the DVD supplied with the machine or download the driver from the manufacturer’s website. In the next window, click the “Have Disk” button and follow the instructions.
- In the “Using Shared Printers” section, put a check mark next to “Shared Sun”.
This completes the setup. After a successful completion message, print a test page.
The same steps will have to be repeated on each computer and laptop on the home network from which you are going to print files.
If WPS is not supported, we do as usual: we find our access point in the list of networks available to the printer and enter the password.
Bluetooth connection It is also easy: turn on the option on both devices and after establishing a connection, enter a one-time access code.
What to do if the printer cannot be connected to the router
The task of such a box is not only to physically combine incompatible devices, but to expand the functionality (alas, many routers limit print support only to printing itself). When you connect a print server, you will have access to scanning (if the device includes a scanner), ink level control, head cleaning, double-sided imaging and much more. He will help out in a situation when mobile gadgets DO NOT see the printer.
As you can see, there are many options. Choose any and free your living space from unnecessary wires.

Hello! Today I decided to talk about WPS (QSS) technology, I will also tell you for.
Hello friends, now I will write very useful and most likely great instructions.
Hello! Today we will talk about the problems that arise when downloading torrents using.
Hello, the second day I am trying to connect the printer to the router. There is a wps button on both devices, the netgear c6300 router, the brother HL-L2305W printer first gave an error through the WSP connection all the time, I connected it manually through the printer settings, I found the router, I entered the password, it was written on the printer panel connected and printed the Corresponding report. You open the settings of the printer router through 192.168.0.1 there. After a manual connection, the connection via WPS stopped giving an error and also writes connected. I tried to connect from the iPhone through the application automatically DOES NOT find it through the manual by entering IP writes can not connect. Check that the WI-fi access point / router’s “Privacy Separator” option is “Disabled” this question is asked the answer is available. As I understand it, the router does not allow other devices to see the printer, help, please, if you can.
Good day. You can do the same, but not on the example of 10s and other noname systems, but all used Windows XP. No “autoconfigurations” or “autosettings”, without the knowledge of the end user. Specifically, network subnet masks ports gateways, etc. Who, where goes and what gets access from. Which users have what print rights, who has access to the global printer settings, etc. We Do not trust autoconfigurations Which are not in our very knowledge that they find there, do and prescribe. All settings on routers, printers, computers and others. Must be configured manually with knowledge of network equipment and network protocols, communications, etc. If a standard user does NOT know how to do any of this, then this example is absolutely useless. Let the user refer to a network professional installer and network communications tuner. And it is stupid to hope that all the new system innovations of autoconfigurations will lead you to the insanely Convenient connection of this or that equipment will end badly. With the slightest mistake or wrong action later, the end user will not even know where to climb and from where a problem may suddenly appear. And so already nothing is taught either in school or in computer classes or in Special courses. over, such articles help people even deeper to illiterately trust all beautiful windows with auto-tuning and buttons. which pair two devices. And what exactly is mating at the moment and how does it come out of course the user does not need to know? All these are the stages of the Massons and their hired rich, which involve “without a verbal herd” to rule them, Use your resources, acquired not in their funds, but on your earned Blood obsessions. And you smiled and, like fools, took advantage of the fact that already at the present stage of development uses you without your knowledge and your resources. Alas, these articles will NOT teach our people anything competent. One gets the impression that such articles are being written by management structures from those who “benefit from it”. Such articles only drive the end user deeper into the depths of computer illiteracy.
Yes dude you say it! I studied at school for 11 years and did NOT learn anything. I opened the Internet and in 3 months I learned the program of 6-7-8-9 grades without any tension. At school, it is as if they make idiots out of people on purpose, and then even the army. over, on the Internet, such articles are slowly making lazy blockheads out of people Who will not even understand architecture. If I were you, I would devote a whole site to this, then you know what these instructions should be, then the site would be the best of its kind. Don’t wait for someone else to do it.
You see, the instructions on the sites are written so that any person, regardless of experience, education, etc., could solve the problem that has arisen quickly and without effort. And for those who want to study technology, there are books. For studying Windows I recommend the two-volume “Windows internals” by Mark Russinovich. On the basics of networking, there is a book “Computer Networks” by Andrew Tanenbaum. He also has publications on PC architecture and operating systems in general. On the topic of information security, I advise you to read the author Chris Kaspersky. All this can be found in the public domain.
Windows XP has not been all used OS for a long time. And this is correct, because at the present time the level of its security, figuratively speaking, is below the plinth.
Regarding the conspiracies of the Freemasons, the world government and the special services: if you are so afraid of them, you should completely abandon the Internet and cellular communications.
Ahaha, thanks)) Oh, the conspiracy laughed heartily. I have a friend who believes in a conspiracy and DOES NOT use Not only social networks, but even e-mail) and he is also an opponent of Wi-Fi, because radiation is harmful))
Regardless of which of the above methods you choose, the settings on the computer are the same in all cases.
You can configure it through the “Control Panel” or through the “Printers and Scanners”. The setup is SIMilar.
“Printers and Scanners” appeared on the latest versions of Windows. This application is suitable for setting up a network printer on Windows 10.
We will configure through the “Control Panel”, which is available on all versions of Windows. Particularly suitable for setting up Windows 7 network printer.
Find “Control Panel” in the computer search. In the control panel we find the section “Devices and Printers”. Click on the item “Add a printer”.
The system will try to find a device connected to the computer, but, of course, it will NOT succeed. Therefore, we will use the item “The required printer is not in the list” at the bottom of the window.
On the next page, select the add item by TCP / IP address or hostname. Click “Next”.
In the next window, in the “Device Type” drop-down list, select “TCP / IP Device”, and below in the “IP address” and “Port Name” fields, enter the address, which we get as follows:
- When connecting a printing device via USB to a router, we enter the IP address of your router, which you enter in the browser to enter the web interface. This is usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. It is indicated on a label at the bottom of the device.
- When connected via LAN, the port with the address set via the menu. In this case, enter this address.
- If the printing device is connected via LAN and receives an IP address from a DHCP server, look at which address was received on the DHCP server.
It is better to uncheck the checkbox from the poll and driver selection automatically.
In the next window, put a tick in the “Special” item and next to it, click the “Options” button.
In the settings window that opens, select the LPR protocol, and in the “Queue name” field. in our example we wrote “naseti”, in fact, any name is written. Click OK and return to the previous page.
Now you can click “Next” and proceed to the actual installation of the printer. The driver can be selected from the list or installed from disk.
You can give the printer a new name, or you can leave it set at the default.
Here are the proposals to allow shared access to the printer, we refuse and click “Next” again.
A message should appear here that everything went well and the printer is ready to work. To verify this, print a test page.
The main disadvantage of the scheme described above is the binding of the printer to a specific computer. For network printing to work, this computer must be turned on. But what if the employee who works for him gets sick and DOES NOT come to work, and access to the computer is password protected? Or the computer is out of order?
Therefore, it is much more convenient when the printer is connected to a router and is always available. But there are nuances here.
Before setting up a network printer via a router, let’s figure out the possible connection options. So, you can connect a printer to a router in the following ways:
- Via USB port. This connection is possible if your router is equipped with a USB connector and supports network printing.
- Through the LAN port. If your printer has a built-in print server with a network port, you can connect it to the router using a patch cord.
- Wi-Fi. Some modern printers are equipped with a Wi-Fi module and can communicate with the router over the air. They can also be connected directly from a laptop equipped with a Wi-Fi module.
- Using a hardware print server. This is a separate device to which the printer connects. The print server has a LAN port for connecting to a router.
Using a hardware print server
If your device is not equipped with a network card or Wi-Fi module, and your router does not have a USB port, you can purchase a hardware print server. As mentioned above, this is a separate device that mediates between the router and the printer.
The budget models have one USB port and one network port. expensive. several USB, as well as, optionally, LPT port. Also, the print server can have a built-in Wi-Fi module and connect to the router not by cable, but by air.
First, connect the print server to the router, and the printer to the print server.
The print server is configured using the supplied proprietary utility. It allows you to find a print server on the network and set an IP address for it. Further configuration is carried out via the web interface according to the instructions. You can enter it by entering in the address bar of the browser the IP that was set for the print server during the initial configuration.
As you can see, there are several ways to connect your network printer to the router, depending on its hardware capabilities.
Connecting a printer via a router
It is common practice in the office and at home to share various peripheral devices on the network, such as scanners or printers. It is convenient. you can immediately print any document and you do not need to carry files on a USB flash drive from computer to computer or buy a separate printer for each workplace. We will tell you how to properly configure equipment for sharing in this article.
Connect the printer to the USB port of the router using a cable. Both devices Must be turned off. Then we turn on the router, wait for it to load. Then you can turn on the printer. By default, the router does NOT need any special configuration, it should immediately recognize the printing device. You can check this by logging into the device web interface and opening the network map. Your printer model should be displayed there. If not, check the status of the print server. It must be online.
LAN port connection
In the device menu, you need to set a static IP address for it. It is advisable to do this even if the DHCP service is configured on your router. The fact is that if the printer’s IP address is constantly changing, it will complicate its search and it will periodically disappear from the list of available devices. There is of course an option to reserve IP addresses in the DHCP server settings by MAC address.
The printer will then restart. Then it can be found in the list of network devices.
Install the printer drivers and print a test page.
If your printer is equipped with a wireless Wi-Fi module, then you can connect it to the router over the air without any wires. This can be done in two ways:
- WPS. In the instructions for your printer, we find how to activate the WPS function. Then we press the WPS activation button on the router. We are waiting for the connection to be established (the indicator on the router will stop blinking) and check if your printer appears on the network map.
- WEP / WPA. Manual configuration is SIMilar to setting up the first connection to a wireless network of any Wi-Fi device. We find the network settings in the printer menu, select the network we need and enter the login and password.
In order for the printer to work independently on the network without connecting to a computer, a print server is needed. The print server can be software built into a router or printer. Routers equipped with a USB port usually have network printing support. However, it is advisable to check the technical documentation just in case. If your router has a USB port, but there is no print server in it, you will not be able to connect the device to it.
If your router does not have a built-in print server and your printer is the most common, you will need a hardware print server. a separate device with a USB port for connecting a printer and a network connector, through which the device is connected to the LAN port of the router through a patch cord.
