How to connect an HP printer to a WI-FI router

Setting up a print server on a router

If you have any difficulties, you can use the utility to configure the print server on the router. You can download it from the manufacturer’s official website by selecting your router model in the “Downloads” section.

To configure the print server on TP-link routers, the proprietary TP-Link UDS Printer Controller utility is used. After you have downloaded and installed the program on your computer, run it and it will automatically find all printers connected to the router. Select the one you want to use for automatic connection.

The utility works with Windows and Mac OS.

For D-Link routers, use the proprietary SIUtility utility. If you have a router from another manufacturer, look for compatible software on the official website.

How to connect a printer to a computer

Connecting a computer to a printer has become easier than ever as we enter the age of innovative technology, but it seems that the amount, color, size and complexity of all wiring can get lost in translation. Even if you think you know how to connect point A to point B, it takes a lot more than just plugging and unplugging to get the results you want.

In our digital age, there are two types of printing. wired and wireless, we’ll show you how to connect your printer to your computer, laptop or handheld device.

Find your printer

  • Open the app on your Apple device that you want to print with
  • After you get the document you want, tap the app share icon
  • From the list of shared options, tap the Print icon and select your printer

Download the Google Cloud Print app to your device.

  • Launch the Play Store from your device’s home screen.
  • Enter “Cloud Print” in the Play Store search box.
  • Select Cloud. Print from Google Inc. and install the app.

Connect your printer to your computer

  • On the Devices screen, you should find the Add Printer or Scanner option
  • After clicking on it, the name of your printer. usually with the manufacturer’s name and model number. should appear as available.
  • Select “Add a device” and your computer will do the rest to complete the wireless setup.
  • Print!

If you receive this notification, follow the computer’s intuitive prompts and click the notification. He can do all the hard work for you. If your computer has provided you with the opportunity to independently resolve all issues, follow these steps.

Setting up the printer via a Wi-Fi router (USB)

Here we will consider connecting a conventional printer, non-networked and without Wi-Fi, through a router to be able to print from any computer on the network.

  • If you need to connect a printer to a computer and share. see this article.
  • If your printer supports Wi-Fi, then you can directly connect it to a Wi-Fi router and set up printing on all computers in the network. How to do this using the example of HP printing equipment can be read and viewed here.

This method takes precedence over using a shared printer. The printing device connects directly to the router and therefore does not need to keep any computer turned on.

Connecting the Printer to a Wi-Fi Router

  • Turn off the printer and Wi-Fi router.
  • We connect the printer to the router via USB.
  • We turn on the router and in a minute the printing device.
  • We go to the web interface of the router and see if the connected device is displayed correctly.

This moment was perfectly illuminated by my colleague in the picture on the right.

Here the question may arise. How to enter the web interface of the router? To do this, take the browser, open a new tab and in the search bar write the address located on the back cover of the Wi-Fi router. This is usually 192.168.1.1, but it could be different. If no one has changed the router settings, then you will be taken to the authorization window. You will need to enter your username and password. This data is on the back cover of the router.

If the settings of the router have been changed and you cannot get into the web interface, check the details of your network with the specialist who configured it. If you can’t find this specialist already, you can reset the router settings, call the provider and, together with the technical support specialist, set up the network and the Internet. The path is long, but you will know everything and in case of an emergency, you will quickly figure it out.

There may be one more nuance. The router may not recognize the printer correctly. In this case, you need to look at the documentation for the router. Your printer might not be supported. But here, too, not all is lost. You can and should update the router’s firmware. The new software may have built-in support for your device. How to flash a router using the example of ASUS RT-N10E told and showed in this article.

Setting up the printer on a computer

If the device is displayed correctly in the web interface of the router, proceed to setting up printing on the computer. I’ll show you using Windows 8 / 8.1 / 10 as an example. For Windows 7, watch the video at the end of the article.

  • Click Add Printer.
  • Click on the link “The required printer is not in the list”.
  • Select “Add a printer by its TCP / IP address or hostname” and “Next”.
  • From the drop-down list, select “TCP / IP Device” and set the IP-address of the router (the address with which we got into the web-interface of the router). Click “Next”.
  • We are waiting for the port search.
  • Select the Device Type “Special” and click “Parameters”.
  • We select the “LPR” protocol and set any queue name. Click “Next”.
  • Click “Next” in the window “Additional information about the port is required”.
  • Selecting a device driver. Here you can:
  • Select printing device manufacturer and model from the list.
  • Click “Windows Update”, wait until the list of available devices is loaded and select from there. Chances are, there is a driver for your printer in the update center.
  • You can download the driver from Printerprofi.ru or from the official website and unpack it. Then click “Install from disk” and specify the path to the unpacked folder.
  • If the driver is not in the system and in the update center, but you are downloading the full version, which is unpacked and it is not clear where it is unpacked and the installer starts immediately, then you can install the printer using this downloaded full driver. Then remove the installed device and follow the recommendations in this article. Since we installed the printer along with the driver, and removed the device itself, but we still have the driver, then we will simply select the manufacturer and model of the printer from the list (the first item of this list).
  • If you installed the device before, you will be prompted. Which version of the driver to use. I usually select “Replace” and press “Next”.
  • Set the name of the printer (you can leave it by default).
  • Removing general access.
  • The printer has been successfully installed. You can print a test page and check.

This is the procedure you need to carry out on each computer on the network.

Connecting the printer to your home network via a picture router

WPS PIN

You can use a PIN to configure, but here you can’t do without a computer.

  • In the printer settings, select the WPS PIN option and confirm the command. The screen should display a code (eight-digit number).
  • On your computer, open the web page of your router
  • In section. enter the code and click Add.
  • Press OK again on the printer.

LAN port connection

In the device menu, you need to set a static IP address for it. It is advisable to do this even if the DHCP service is configured on your router. The fact is that if the IP address of the printer is constantly changing, it will complicate its search and it will periodically disappear from the list of available devices. There is of course an option to reserve the IP address in the DHCP server settings by MAC address.

The printer will then reboot. After that it can be found in the list of network devices.

Install the printer drivers and print a test page.

With the help of Hadroid

If there is a WI-FI module in the printing device, you can connect not only a PC or laptop, but also a smartphone to it.

  • Connect the required equipment. Power on, connect the device to the PC and install the cartridge.
  • Turn on the printer.
  • Connect the router if it was not turned on before.
  • Turn on the Wi-Fi module on the printing device. This can be done through the settings or using a dedicated button. Details can be found in the operating instructions.

After installing the printer through the router, connect to the network and the mobile phone.

After that, there are several ways to connect the MFP through a router using a smartphone. directly, using a virtual printer or via a remote connection.

The easiest way is with a direct connection. Much depends on the smartphone here, because many models do not allow using third-party programs, but can connect to the network and transfer photos for printing directly. Many smartphones have dedicated software such as Canon Print.

If there is no such software, you can download it from the Play Market (PrinterShare is also suitable). The aLGorithm of actions is as follows:

Knowing how to connect an MFP via a WI-FI router, and having a phone at hand, you can print a photo or send a document for printing at any time. Note that other applications work on the same principle, so there is no need to consider them separately.

Features of different printer models

There are three types of printing devices:

  • Matrix (practically not used).
  • Jet.
  • Laser.

Dot matrix devices had a slow printing speed. The inconvenience during use was the paper feeding. It had to be served strictly according to the instructions, otherwise the apparatus would break down.

Laser devices have high-speed printing, can operate at high temperatures and heavy workloads without rest. Refilling cartridges is carried out with toner, which must necessarily match the brand of the printer. The paper must be adequate and of good quality. This will extend the usage time of the MFP.

Configuring the router

I would like to draw your attention to the following. Even if your router, with the firmware version that is currently installed, supports the option of connecting a printer, first check the list of printer models supported by this firmware.

The list should be provided on the website of the router manufacturer (or the firmware manufacturer).

How to connect the printer to the router, probably, will not cause any questions.

Diagram of connecting the printer to the router

Note: The USB cable is connected to the router when the adapter (power supply) is off.

If necessary, you can use a USB hub. After turning on the power of the router, go to the web interface from the local network computer (the IP address is usually indicated on the box):

Web interface

After entering a login with a password, on the main tab (“Network Map”). it is reported that the printer was detected and successfully recognized by the router. If the router does not see the printer, or writes the wrong model name, then, perhaps, this USB printer is not supported by the firmware of your router. But if everything is correct, we proceed to the next stage (from the web interface, now you can exit).

iPhone

If you can’t connect the printer via a WI-FI router on Windows 10, 8, or 7, try sending files to print using your iPhone. The aLGorithm of actions is as follows:

  • Make sure the printing device supports AirPrint.
  • Check that all devices are connected to the same WI-FI network and are within working range.
  • Open the program with which you will be printing.
  • To search for a seal, click on a special symbol (arrow or three dots).

Scroll down the screen and click on the button with the printer, then click on the button to print.

  • Click Select Printer and find your device.
  • Specify the number of copies and settings other parameters.

At the final stage, click on the print button and make sure that the document is printed.

No wires

But now we will already look at how to connect the printer to the network through a router without using any wires. This method is suitable for owners of modern printers with an adapter and implies two different options.

We’ll start with the way that WPS is used. This function must be supported by the printing device, and a separate button for it is required at the dispensing point. If everything fits, then let’s proceed.

  • We study the instructions for the printer and find with its help WPS activation in the menu. For each individual case, there may be differences in the location of this menu item.
  • We hold down the corresponding button on the router and wait for exactly two minutes.

The connection is established and now you can go again to the settings.

The second solution in this case involves manual manipulation of the connection, similar to the actions when entering the network for the first time from a computer.

  • On the printer, click the “Settings” button and look inside the item associated with the network.
  • We choose the name of the network that you need in your particular case.
  • Enter the password combination.

After that, the connection can be considered complete. We installed a network printer through a router and now we need to figure out what to do to start using it. The advantage of the connection method via a Wi-Fi distribution point is that you will not need to turn on a specific computer to start a document for printing.

Setting up and preparing for printing

Setting up a printer via a Wi-Fi router is absolutely not a complicated matter: the main thing is to clearly follow each point.

  • We open “Start” and there we find the “Control Panel” we need.
  • Scroll down the list and find the item “Printers and Devices”.
  • Inside we are interested in the “Add Printer” parameter.
  • The search for it will begin on the next page, but we are interested in the button at the bottom of the window. “The printer is not in the list”.
  • The next page will present us with many options, among which we need to choose add over TCP / IP.
  • In the top line from the list, select the option similar to the previous one and below twice enter the same address that you should have remembered. He also served as a pass to the router settings.
  • After the search, another page with parameters will open to you. put a tick in front of “Special” and already next to it click on the “Parameters” button.
  • Next, we need to click on the checkbox opposite “LPR” and just below in the “Queue name” field enter any name.
  • You will be returned to the previous page, where you need to click “Next”. We can assume that our connection of the MFP through a router is almost complete.
  • The next window will offer a choice of printers and their models for installing the driver. You can also use update center or install drivers from disk.
  • In the next step, just choose to replace the driver.
  • Now you need to come up with a name for the printer or leave it with the old one.
  • We refuse to share by ticking the appropriate checkbox.

Next, you will receive a message that everything went well and the device is ready to print. This is the whole instruction on how to set up a printer via a Wi-Fi router.

Thanks to the sequence we have considered, you can easily do all the same on other computers on the network and send documents to print, sitting at any of them. We hope that this instruction has finally clarified for you the question of how to connect a printer through a router, and now it will not be difficult.

Connecting the Printer via Wi-Fi: Two Ways

Wi-Fi wireless network is a really great technology, thanks to which you can connect various devices to your PC remotely without any problems. This option can be very useful when there are several computers at work or on a home network and a printer is often used. Today we will figure out how to connect a printer via a Wi-Fi router and what advantages this method gives us.

One-stop solution

It should be noted right away that there are two ways. through a special cable and without wires. The second option is possible only if the printer has the required specifications, that is, an adapter.

In the first case, we will look at how to connect a printer to a router via USB (if your router model has such a port). As everyone knows, this cable is usually used to connect to a computer, but this time we will go in a non-standard way.

  • We turn off the router and the printer. they do not recognize each other on the go, so only such a solution will help.
  • We connect them with a cable. All new models of routers must have a corresponding socket.
  • We turn on the distribution point and wait for it to load, after which we turn on your printing device.
  • Now we check our printer connection via a Wi-Fi router. We sit down at the computer and open any of the many possible browsers. as a last resort, if you did not install anything yourself, you can use the same Internet Explorer.
  • We are looking for the address bar and click on it with the left button to start typing.
  • Enter the special key-address 192.168.0.1 and click on “ENTER”. It is important to remember. if you were not allowed further and nothing happens, then you need to try to change 0 to 1 in combination. If in this case everything remains as it was, then try to find information about changing the address on the router box or on the device itself. usually this is a separate information sticker.

It is worth remembering which option came up, since you will need this combination again a little later.

  • The next screen will show us a request to enter login information. Standard solutions are also used here. enter the values ”admin” in both Windows. Does the system indicate incorrect data? Try to enter again or look for data on the change in values by the manufacturer on the same sticker.
  • On the example of an Asus device, you can see that if you go to the “Network Map”, then the connected printer should be displayed there.

Everything went fine, the connection of the network printer via the router is complete and now we need to do the settings. We will tell you about them immediately after we finish with the second method.

How to connect a printer to a laptop via WI-FI

I have extensive experience in setting up and connecting access control systems (ACS) and time attendance systems. And also I am engaged in setting up servers, computers, workplaces.
I work as an engineer at Technootkrytie.

Step 1: Configuring the printer’s connection to the router

The customization process will not cause any difficulties for any user. Pay attention to an important detail. all manipulations with wires are performed only when the devices are turned off.

Using a standard USB cable, connect the printer to the corresponding port of your router. Turn on the router by pressing the button on the back of the device.

In the opened router settings, go to the “Network Map” tab and click on the “Printer” icon.

On the next page, we observe the printer model that your router has automatically detected.

We connect the printer via a router

If your router has a USB port, then it can be used to make a network printer out of a simple printer, that is, from any device connected to your Wi-Fi network, you can easily and naturally print any content. So, how to properly set up the connection between the printing device and the router? We will find out.

Connecting the Printer via Wi-Fi Router

Step 2: Setting up a PC or laptop on a network with a printer

Now you need to make the necessary changes to the configuration of the network printer on each computer or laptop connected to the local network. Let’s take a PC with Windows 8 on board as an illustrative example. In other versions of the most popular operating system in the world, our actions will be similar with minor differences.

READ  Which inkjet all-in-one printer is better

Right-click on “Start” and in the context menu that appears, select “Control Panel”.

On the next tab, we are interested in the “Equipment and Sound” section, where we go.

Then our path lies in the settings block “Devices and Printers”.

The search for available printers starts. Without waiting for it to finish, feel free to click on the parameter “The required printer is not in the list”.

Then we put a check in the box “Add a printer by its TCP / IP-address or hostname”. Click on the “Next” icon.

Now we change the device type to “TCP / IP Device”. In the line “Name or IP-address” we write the current coordinates of our router. In our case, this is 192.168.0.1. then go “Next”.

A TCP / IP port search starts. Patiently waiting for the end.

No device was found on your network. But don’t worry, this is normal during the setup process. Change the device type to “Special”. We enter the “Parameters”.

On the port parameters tab, set the LPR protocol, in the “Queue name” field, write any number or word, click “OK”.

The printer driver model is being determined. We are waiting for the completion of the process.

In the next window, select the manufacturer and model of your printer from the lists. We continue “Next”.

Then be sure to put a check in the “Replace the current driver” parameter. It is important!

Come up with a new name for the printer or leave the default name. We follow further.

Installation of the printer begins. It won’t take long.

Allow or deny sharing your printer with other users on the local network.

Done! The printer is installed. You can print from this computer via a Wi-Fi router. We observe the correct status of the device on the “Devices and Printers” tab. Everything is fine!

  • When you first print to a new network printer, be sure to select it from the drop-down list in the settings.
  • As you have seen, it is quite easy to connect a printer to a router and share it with a local network. A little patience when setting up devices and maximum convenience. And it’s worth the time.

    Printer driver

After clicking the “Next” button, do not select the printer from the list.

You need to click “Have Disk”, and then select the path to the folder with the driver. Typically, the printer driver is included on the supplied CD.

Before installing, come up with a name for the printer:

Under this name, you will see this printer on your computer. Click Next:

At the end of the installation, select “No Sharing” (which is important):

And, you can make this printer the default:

Click Finish. In fact, setting up a printer via a router requires one more step.

    Printer router: network printing

Many today, at home and in the office, have their own local area network for several computers. Most often, such a network can be built using a router. If the router is equipped with a USB port, in any case you get the ability to print any documents if you connect a printer to the router. Network technologies will allow you to do this. Connecting a printer via a router is always possible if the router has a USB port. The only limitation may be that the “network” printing function. not all will be supported by the software (that is, firmware) of the router itself.

Most of the modern models of routers have support for “printing”. We will look at how to set up a printer through a router using a typical ASUS WL-500gP wi-fi router as an example.

    Configuring the router

I would like to draw your attention to the following. Even if your router, with the version of firmware (firmware) that is currently installed, supports the option of connecting a printer, first check the list of printer models supported by this firmware. The list should be provided on the website of the router manufacturer (or the firmware manufacturer).

How to connect the printer to the router, probably, will not cause any questions.

Note: The USB cable is connected to the router when the adapter (power supply) is off.

If necessary, you can use a USB hub. After turning on the power of the router, go to the web interface from the local network computer (the IP address is usually indicated on the box):

After entering a login with a password, on the main tab (“Network Map”). it is reported that the printer was detected and successfully recognized by the router. If the router does not see the printer, or writes the wrong model name, then, perhaps, this USB printer is not supported by the firmware of your router. But if everything is correct, we proceed to the next stage (from the web interface, now you can exit).

    Finishing touch

On the “Control Panel”, select the printer we are interested in (in “devices”):

In the “Printer Properties”, we will change exactly one parameter. the port protocol. The Ports tab, a checkmark for the required printer (you can navigate by the port’s IP address), the Configure port button:

Then, choose, as in the figure (LPR protocol). And “Queue name” can be any:

Congratulations! After clicking “OK”, you can print a test page.

We managed to connect the printer through a router, but from the computer, the printer is seen as one of the “local” printers (but not as a “network” one). Therefore, similar settings will have to be performed on each computer (laptop) from which you want to print.

Setting up the printer on a computer

In Windows 7, the setting looks like this: go to “Start”. Search, type installation:

We need “Printer Installation”. By clicking on the link, we will see a window:

In this window, add the “Local” printer (“Next”). Then, we make a choice of the port (as in the picture):

Here you need the IP address at which you entered the web interface (i.e., the address of the router). The checkbox “Poll” must be unchecked. Click “Next”, and expect:

As a result, a window should appear like this:

There is no need to worry: the printer is really “seen” through the router. Choose the type. “Normal”, and “Generic Network Card”, click “Next”.

Note: you need to pay attention to the correctness of the specified IP address (it coincides with the address of the router, that is, the address of the web interface).

    Additionally

Also, in principle, you can connect the mfp to the router (then, in the local devices of the computer, a scanner will appear). The technology discussed above is called “Share Port”. If the router has such a setting. with a high probability, everything will work.

It’s another matter if the network connection of the printer to the router is configured (“network” printer):
