How to make your first 3D model?
To make a 3D model or print a ready-made model on a 3D printer, you just need to follow the instructions. No skill or ability required. The main thing is to just follow simple instructions.
1. First of all, we need to decide what we will use to make our 3D model. You can choose any 3D modeling package. Here is a short list of programs you can use:
Google SketchUp (free)
Openscad (free); (uploaded by user klirichek, artoym)
FreeCad (free); (uploaded by user klirichek)
AutoCad (uploaded by user PHmaster)
Sculptris (uploaded by user Darth Biomech)
and many many others.
The main requirement is to export to a format for 3D printing.stl.
However, the easiest way is to simulate directly from the browser using the following services:
There are many analogues on the Internet. For the first time, we will try www.tinkercad.com as the easiest and fastest.
Then follow the link. We are met by a cute little penguin:
Then, at the top right, there are login buttons. Click “sign up for free account”. This login can be used in other 123d products from autodesk. But more about this in the following articles.
Enter and install the plugin, if it is not already installed:
For navigation, you can use the right and middle mouse buttons or the navigation bar on the left:
Now we need to make any 3D model by dragging the cubes. Here you will need to use your imagination:
After that, select everything that happened:
This model is already ready for printing:
The most important thing must be preserved. Press the button Design.
Now we have a file ready to send to the printer. If you don’t have a 3D printer at home, you can search nearby 3D services that are ready to help you print.
We scale the part to save materials and time:
From the settings we set the high speed, everything else is set by default. We press to start preparation
The computer calculates the task a little and gives us the results:
We just save the task to the microSD flash drive:
Select the file, find the one we need and send it to print. 28. That’s it, the printer started to warm up.
P.S. If anyone knows online modeling services, you can safely add to the comments.

How to create a model for a 3d printer
Modern technologies are actively developing, being introduced into various spheres of human activity and becoming commonplace in every home. They never cease to amaze and amaze users. Relatively recently, a printer has been invented that can create ready-made shapes in a volumetric format. It took science and industry one step forward in development.
Since we are not talking about flat (two-dimensional) display of files and documents, but about working in volume, special sketches or models are required for its implementation. This creates some difficulties in the implementation of work with the equipment. With the help of ready-made models, the printer recognizes the future image of the product and creates it from special polymer materials. In our article we will look at possible ways to create and use ready-made models for printing.
IMPORTANT: For beginners, in the first stages of operation, you should learn how to work with blanks. To create your own figures, you need computer knowledge and work with various programming languages.
How to create a model for a 3D printer?
If you have such a device at home, or your professional activity is related to work in this area, you should learn how to use and correctly use the equipment. Without special software, drivers and applications, work will not take place. The use of sketches also plays an important role, without which the printer will not perform its functions. You can make them as follows:
- Start your computer and connect the printer. When using for the first time, you need to download the software installation package. It is located on the disc that comes with the equipment.
- After successful pairing, you should install one of the applications with a set of volumetric layouts (the list of applications and programs is presented below). You can download it from the official website or purchase a starter kit for 3D printers.
- Run the application, register if necessary. After that, it is recommended to complete training in the basics of modeling. It does not take much time, and you will learn the basic skills for creating structures of any shape and size.
- After completing the tutorials, return to the main menu, open the dashboard inside the application. Find and click on the button that says “create a new project”, the program will automatically come up with a name, and then launch a project to create a new layout.
- Use the toolbox and pre-set, move them to the work area. Using the arrows and adjustment points, you can change the size and position of the figure in space.
- After completing the project, go to the “design” line and select the “download for 3D printer” action. The application will create a file with the required resolution and send it for printing. Check the condition of your equipment and then start printing.
With the correct execution of all actions, you should get a finished three-dimensional product on the equipment desktop.
TIP: To quickly change the volume of the shape, use the mouse wheel, and to easily change the angle of inclination, hold down the right mouse button and move the cursor to the desired side.
Which applications / services to use?
To implement the functioning of the system, use ready-made layouts and create your own ideas in modeling, it is recommended to use special services:
You can also use the web sites in the browser to create the model online (for example, https://tinkercad.com/).
Try to use different services and choose the best one. Improve your skills to create your own designs and bring them to life.
Even conventional printers use special materials and dyes to create a print. Since 3D parts are made of different materials, special raw materials must be used to create them. The most popular are the following samples: PLA, ABS, PVAL. All of them are natural or artificial polymers with different characteristics and properties. You can learn more about them on the Internet.
Creating a model for a 3D printer
Printers for three-dimensional printing are becoming more and more affordable, respectively, they are purchased by ordinary users who want to master this technology. Some are not satisfied with the printing of ready-made models downloaded from the Internet, so they ask questions about creating their own project. The task is carried out with the help of special software and requires superficial or in-depth knowledge of the functionality of such software, which depends on the user’s requirements for the model.
In Autodesk Fusion 360, you don’t have to manually activate toolbars or choose any unusual options. The user only needs to make sure of the correct project metric and, if necessary, change the properties of the sides of the view, which happens like this:
After downloading and installing Autodesk Fusion 360 from the official site, the first launch should occur. No start Windows will be displayed, so a new project will be created automatically. Pay attention to the “Browser” section, which is located on the left under the main panels. Here select “Document Settings” to expand this section.
Go to editing the file “Units” if the standard value in millimeters does not suit you.
In the block displayed on the right, select the optimal unit of measurement, which you will have to follow throughout the entire time of interaction with the project.
Then check out the Named Views and Origin section. Here you can rename each side according to personal preference and customize the display of the axes in the workspace.
At the end of the configuration, make sure that the “Design” space is selected, because this is where the initial creation of all objects takes place.
First launch and working with models
First, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the basic principle of interacting with SketchUp in order to understand exactly how you add and manage models. Next, we will leave a link to the tutorials, if you want to study this solution in more detail.
After installing and launching SketchUp, you need to click on the “Login” button to connect your user account. If you started acquaintance with the trial period, then from this moment the countdown of days begins until its end.
When the “Welcome to SketchUp” window appears, click on “Simple” to go to the workspace.
Drawing shapes in this program is carried out in the same way as in other similar solutions. Hover over the Draw section and select a custom shape.
After that, it is placed on the workspace and at the same time its size is edited.
The rest of the buttons on the top panels perform modifier options and are responsible for performing other actions.
As we said before, the SketchUp developers provide a wide variety of tutorials on how to interact with this application, not only in text format, but also as a YouTube video. You can get acquainted with all this on the official website using the link below.
Exporting a project
The final stage of preparing the model for printing is exporting it in a suitable STL format. This data type is supported by 3D printers and will be correctly recognized. You don’t have to do any rendering or additional processing if colors or any simple textures have already been assigned to the project.
In the pop-up list that appears, select “Stl (.stl)”.
Specify a location on removable or local media, set a name for the model and click on “Export STL”.
The project will be immediately saved and available for other actions. Now you can insert the USB flash drive into the printer or connect it to the computer to start an existing job. We will not give advice on setting it up, since they are purely individual for each device model and are clearly spelled out in the instructions and various documentation.
Of course, after starting Blender, you can immediately start familiarizing yourself with the interface and developing models, but first it is better to pay attention to the preparatory steps in order to set up the working environment for layouts for 3D printers. This operation will not take much time and will require activating only a few parameters.
To begin with, in the start window, select the appearance parameters and the arrangement of elements, starting from personal needs.
In the next section of the Quick Setup window, you will see different templates for getting started and links to resources with background information that will come in handy when mastering the software. Close this window to proceed to the next configuration step.
In the category that appears, expand the “Units” block.
Set the metric system of measurements and set the scale to “1”. This is necessary in order for the scene parameters to be transferred to the space of the 3D printer in the proper form.
Now pay attention to the top bar of the program. There, hover over “Edit” and in the pop-up menu that appears, select “Preferences”.
Find and activate two items called “Mesh: 3D-Print Toolbox” and “Mesh: LoopTools”.
Make sure that the checkboxes were checked successfully and then leave this window.
Additionally, we recommend paying attention to other configuration items. Here you can customize the appearance of the program, change the arrangement of interface elements, transform them or completely disable them. After completing all these steps, proceed to the next step.
Many users know SketchUp as a tool for modeling houses, but the functionality of this software is much wider, so it can be used as a tool for working with models in preparation for 3D printing. SketchUp made it to our list today because of the easy import of ready-made free models for editing and further saving in the desired format. Let’s take turns dealing with all aspects of managing this software.
Creating a 3D object
Modeling is the main process of creating a project for further printing on the appropriate equipment. This topic will have to be understood by every user who wants to independently work on various shapes and objects. However, to do this, you will have to study a fairly large layer of information, because the functionality of Blender is so huge that only the very basics can be intuitively understood. Unfortunately, the format of our today’s article will not allow you to accommodate even a small part of all the information and instructions, so we advise you to refer to the official documentation in Russian, where all information is divided into categories and described in detail. To do this, just click on the following link.

Modern industry and design cannot be imagined without 3D modeling. Before starting the production of products, it is necessary to build a 3D model of the object, and, using rapid prototyping technology, create a prototype. This is necessary in order to evaluate the ergonomics of the future product (for example, you need to make a body of a part or a prototype of a car). In addition, the production of a prototype can be one of the stages. on the way to creating a mold for casting. for small-scale production or the release of a trial batch of products.
Three-dimensional modeling is a type of computer graphics that combines various kinds of software and hardware tools to create three-dimensional models of objects. 3D modeling and visualization are widely used in industrial design and engineering. With the help of 3D modeling, volumetric graphic objects are created, through rendering (placing a 3d model on the required background for visualizing the object in the environment) acquire maximum photorealism.
With the help of 3D modeling technologies, it is possible to recreate objects from drawings / or photographs. It should be noted that there are many software methods (programs) for creating pseudo-3D models based on photographs.
We are talking about the construction of an accurate 3D model from a photograph, by an experienced specialist from the KOLORO company. It is worth noting that a professional 3D designer must have not only skills in working with graphic programs, but also a special technical education. This is a guarantee that the three-dimensional model built by him will not only be beautiful, but also fully comply with the technical requirements put forward for this category of objects.
So, as a basis for creating a 3D model, you can use:
- 3D scanner (3D scan results);
- real object (3D model created from point cloud);
- an oral description of the required object;
- freehand drawing (or sketching) of an object;
3D modeling from photography
3D modeling from photography is called photogrammetry. Recall that there are many “amateur” programs that create 3D models from photography, but, in most cases, such programs build a pseudo-3D image.
A high-quality 3D model can only be built in a professional program for working with three-dimensional graphics. At the same time, as in the case of 3D modeling according to drawings, we need to have an image of at least three object faces: top, side and front views.
3D modeling from photography is used when:
- the drawings of the object are lost or do not exist;
- it is necessary to create a 3D model of a person;
- in some other cases, when photographic similarity of the model with the original is required.
3D modeling according to drawings
Drawings act as template images. In order to create a 3D model from the drawings, you need to have three drawings of the object. front, top and side, and ideally also back.
- indication of all dimensions (thickness of partitions, dimensions of planes, internal components of the object, etc.);
- the correct location of all objects relative to the coordinate axis;
- an indication of the material from which the object will be made.
It is advisable to attach the following information to the drawings:
- method of prototyping (3D printing, milling, molding, combined prototyping method);
- the required method of manufacturing the object, which guarantees the high quality of the future product.
If the drawing does not meet the required industry standards, KOLORO will carry out additional work to standardize the product. Taking into account the wishes of the client, our specialists:
- carry out the necessary research;
- deal with your problem and offer a solution;
- create a drawing that meets the required standards;
- create a 3D model of the object based on its drawing.
Modern 3D scanners allow 3D scanning of an object of any size and shape. Laser 3D scanners, on the basis of the data obtained, build a 3D model of the object themselves. And, in the future, the resulting three-dimensional image is laboriously processed by a 3D designer.
This method of 3D modeling is one of the most cost-effective, because the time and technical costs for creating a 3D model in this case are minimal. This method can be used both for creating a 3D model of a small object (for example, creating a bottle design), and for 3D modeling of large objects (for example, architectural 3D modeling).
3D modeling based on a real object
Often this method of 3D modeling is used in the absence of a 3D scanner and the impossibility of making a high-quality photograph of the object. The object itself, in this case, should be small in size and transportable, because the engineer will have to work directly with the object. move and move it, and, if necessary, disassemble the object into separate parts.
The KOLORO company will create a 3D model for you from a photograph, which:
- will comply with all technical standards declared for the facility;
- due to 3D visualization, it will not differ in any way from the real photographed object;
- can be used to prototype an object.
Specialized employees of the KOLORO company will carry out 3D modeling in the shortest possible time: according to drawings, photographs or based on a real object. Note that in the technical arsenal of the KOLORO company, among other things, there is also a 3D scanner, which will be especially useful when modeling large objects.!
