How to set default printer settings in Windows

Your printer may offer you a choice of options. Such as color or black and white, draft quality (uses less ink) or high quality (darkens and sharpens images).

To change these settings for all printed documents, on the control panel, select View devices and printers (in the Hardware and Sound group).

The “Devices and Printers” window that opens will list all the printers you have installed. Right click on the printer and select “Print Options”.

How to set the default printer?

Very often, in offices, several printers can be connected to one computer at the same time. The user, in order to print a certain one of them, has to enter the “file-print” menu every time. These steps are time-consuming and easy to work around. you just need to install the default printer on your computer.

    How to install?

Most computers run on the Windows operating system, so the instructions are provided for this particular technique. So, to make the printer the default, you need to perform a number of specific actions.

    • Click the “Start” button, go to the “Settings” menu and select there a tab called “Control Panel”. Even for a novice PC user, there is nothing complicated in THESE actions.
    • In the “Control Panel”, select the item called “Printers and Faxes”.
    • There you need to select the desired printer, name it with the mouse and check the box “Use as default”.

After the actions taken, printing from this computer will be output exclusively to the selected printer.

READ  How to wake up your brother printer

If Windows 7 is installed on the computer, then you will also need to do these steps. The only difference is that here the names of the tabs can be different. So, in the “Hardware and Sound” section, you need to find a tab called “View devices and printers”.

There you need to select the “Printer” tab and set the corresponding checkbox “Use as default”.

In the new Windows 10 OS, you can also set the printer as the master.

    • In the Settings section, there is a Printers & Scanners tab. There you need to select the desired printer model, and then click “Manage”.
    • In the window that opens, select “Use as default”.

    How to change?

If a default printer is already installed on the personal computer, you can also change it if necessary. To do this, you need to go to the control menu using the above methods, uncheck the “Use as default” checkbox from the selected printer and install it on the desired device.

    make, default, printer

Changing the printing device is most often required when devices with black and white and color printing are connected to the computer. If you need to change printers constantly, then it is better to choose a printer each time than to set the default 2 devices several times a day.

    Possible problems

Sometimes it is not possible to set the default printer on some computers. At the same time, the technique itself, when trying, gives an error 0x00000709 that is incomprehensible to the user.

Accordingly, this device does not output and print.

You can solve this problem in a few simple steps.

    • Through the “Start” button, go to the “Run” tab.
    • Next, you need to enter the Regedit command. Windows editor will be called.
    • In the window that opens, you will need to find the so-called Hkey current user branch, which is located in the panel on the left side.
    • After that, you need to click the tab called Software, then Microsoft and then Windows NT.

After the done actions, you need to go to the CurrentVersion tab, and then find Windows there.

Now you need to turn your attention to the opened case windows. There you need to find a parameter named Device. It should contain the name of the printer, which is currently selected by default. This parameter must be deleted using the Delete key.

The computer will then need a standard reboot. It updates the registry settings. Next, the user needs to go to the “Devices and Printers” tab and by one of the known methods, select the default computer.

This is far from the only reason why a computer may refuse to set the selected device as the main one. So, problems may arise due to other features.

    • No drivers are installed on the selected computer. In this case, the computer may simply not include the device in the list of available ones. The solution to the problem is simple: you need to install the driver. The device will be displayed in the list of available ones. All that remains on it is to check the “Default” box.
    • The printing device is NOT connected to the network or is not working properly. Sometimes the reason for inaccessibility lies not in the computer, but in the device itself. To rectify the situation, you need to check the correct connection of the printing technicians, then try to make another attempt to set the printer as the main one.
    • The printer is connected correctly but is defective. It is possible that in this case it will be possible to set it to the user by default, but it will still NOT be printed on it. Here you should already understand the reasons for the inoperability of the printing device.

By following these simple steps, you can get rid of the unnecessary steps of constantly choosing a printer when you need to print some information. This will significantly reduce the time spent on printing documents, and all information will be displayed on the same printing device.

For details on how to set the default printer, see the video below.

With the help of each of them, carrying out a certain procedure, you can select one of the main printers. Next, we will tell you how to accomplish this task using all the available methods.

    Options

Windows 10 has a menu with options, where peripherals are also edited. You can assign a default device through the “Parameters” as follows:

    • Open “Start” and go to “Settings” by clicking on the gear icon.

In the list of sections, find and select “Devices”.

In the menu on the left, click on “Printers and Scanners” and find the equipment you need. Select it and click on the “Control” button.

Assign a default device by clicking on the corresponding button.

    Control Panel

Earlier versions of Windows did not have a “Options” menu and all configuration took place mainly through the elements of the “Control Panel”, including printers. This classic application is still in the top ten and the task considered in this article is performed using it as follows:

Expand the “Start” menu, where in the input field type “Control Panel” and click on the application icon.

Find the category “Devices and Printers” and go to it.

In the displayed list of equipment, right-click on the required one and activate the “Use by default” item. A green checkmark should appear next to the icon of the main device.

    Command line

You can bypass all of these applications and windows using the “command line”. As the name implies, in this utility, all actions are performed through commands. We want to talk about those who are responsible for the default device assignment. The whole procedure is performed literally in a few steps:

As in the previous options, you need to open “Start” and through it will launch the classic “Command Line” application.

Enter the first command wmic printer get name, default and press Enter. She is responsible for displaying the names of all installed printers.

Now print a line like this: wmic printer where name = “PrinterName” call setdefaultprinter. Where PrinterName is the name of the device you want to set as default.

The Corresponding Method is called and you are notified of its successful completion. If the content of the notification is identical to what you see in the screenshot below, then the task was completed correctly.

Disable automatic change of main printer

Windows 10 has a system feature that automatically switches the default printer. According to the algorithm of the tool, the device that was used last is selected. Sometimes this interferes with the normal operation of printing equipment, so we decided to demonstrate how to disable this function on our own:

Through “Start” go to the “Options” menu.

In the window that opens, select the category “Devices”.

Pay attention to the panel on the left, in it you need to move to the “Printers and scanners” section.

Find the function you are interested in called “Let Windows control the default printer” and uncheck the box.

This is where our article comes to its logical conclusion. As you can see, even an inexperienced user can set the default printer in Windows 10 with one of three options to choose from. We hope our instructions were useful and you did not have any problems with the task.
