How it works
Clicking the Create Barcodes button creates a new sheet in the current workbook and fills it with barcodes. To do this, the program reads the settings of the barcode generator and begins to generate barcode sequences. For the first sequence, it takes the barcode prefix. attaches to it on the right the number of the first barcode from the settings, and between them inserts so many zeros to end up with a twelve-character string, after which it calculates according to a special aLGorithm and attaches the thirteenth to it. control. figure. The resulting barcode (13 digits), she, firstly, writes into cell A1 of the newly created sheet of the workbook, and secondly, after some transformation. in cell B1, assigning this cell, moreover, the font EAN13. After that, she similarly creates the second barcode, using the same setting as its “number”First barcode number, but already increased by one, and so on. until the total number of created barcodes equals the setting How many barcodes to create. After that, the barcode generator makes the newly created sheet with the generated barcodes current and stops, allowing the user to print the generated barcodes.
Small scientific digression
The EAN13 code consists of thirteen digits, different places in this 13-character sequence have different meanings. Within the framework of this article, we are only interested in that:
Downloading the barcode generator
In order to generate barcodes on your computer, you need to download a free Excel Barcode Generation Workbook and save it on your computer’s hard drive. Actually, you will download not just an Excel file, but an archive containing three files:
- Instructions.doc: Instructions for using the barcode generator. Repeats this text completely
- ean13.ttf: the “barcode” font file to be installed on the system
- Barcode generator.xls: the actual barcode generator, made in the form of an Excel workbook
Download and unzip this file to your computer hard drive, then proceed to install the barcode font. ean13.ttf in Windows.
Setting the font for printing barcodes
Now you need to install the font on Windows EAN13.TTF, without which you cannot print barcodes. You are welcome:
On Windows XP and earlier versions of this operating system:
Select the Start button, then Control Panel, in it launch the Fonts icon
As a result of the launch, a window with a list of installed fonts will appear on your screen. Click the “Add new font” menu item and select the font file in the window that appears EAN13.TTF, saved on hard disk (see previous chapter).
In Windows 7 and Windows Vista:
In Windows 7, the “add font” button disappeared from the window Fonts. Find the font file in explorer EAN13.TTF, “copy” it with the right mouse button and then “paste” it into the Windows font list.
Launching the barcode generator
The barcode font is now installed on Windows. In the folder where you unzipped the downloaded files, double-click the file Barcode generator.xls. Perhaps when you start, you will see the following picture:
This means that macros are disabled in your Office for computer security, and you need to enable them.
Microsoft Excel. it is not only a spreadsheet system but also a program equipped with a powerful built-in programming language Vusial Basic for Applications (VBA). Using VBA macros (the so-called VBA programs), you can achieve unprecedented heights in creating spreadsheets, and programmers who develop programs for Microsoft Office often use this.
However, this is not only used by programmers. The popularity of Microsoft Office and the power of its built-in programming language has attracted the attention of hackers and virus writers around the world who stuff Office spreadsheets and documents with hacker routines and upload them to the Internet. The only measure Microsoft could come up with for the safety of users was to disable the default macros from running.
The barcode generator you are reading now is also an Excel file with embedded macros. We know that there is no malicious code in this file (in general, our task is to eventually sell you the Tirika-Store program, and not infect your computer), but whether to trust these words. you decide. If you decide not to trust us, you can stop reading this article and delete the downloaded file: unfortunately, without macros, the file you downloaded for generating barcodes will not work.
If you decide to trust us, enable macros in Excel and “run” the downloaded file Barcode generator.xls. When the Excel workbook for printing labels opens, you can immediately generate barcodes after specifying simple generator settings:
After the settings of the barcode generator are completed, you can click the Generate Barcodes button. In response, the barcode generator will create a new Excel sheet for you and populate it with the generated barcodes (Column A). Additionally, this program will fill column B with “pictures” of barcodes, “drawn” using the same EAN13 font that you downloaded with the barcode generator:
You can print this page on a printer and then delete it from the workbook, or you can delete it even without printing: you can always generate these barcodes again and so on. there is simply no need to save them to your hard drive.
How the barcode is printed
Like text, barcodes exist as fonts. For personal computers, True Type barcode fonts have been developed to work in the Windows environment. They install just like any other Windows font.
They can then be used in any Windows application, and printed on any printer installed with the Windows driver. Barcode can be inserted into any document using this method. The only thing to watch out for are the EAN, UPC, Interleaved 2 of 5 and Code 128 fonts, which are not as simple as they seem. They use check digits, characters are encoded in pairs, and special formatting characters are required. For this, special auxiliary programs are used. You define the information to be encoded. The program formats the text to include additional information. Then, the new text must be copied and pasted into the application using the barcode font. If you use programs that support dynamic link updates (Dynamic Link Libraries (DLL)), then it is possible to automate the coding process.
Similar fonts exist for DOS applications delivered in the form of Terminate and Stay Ready (TSR) programs. These applications are more difficult to use because the barcode data is only visible to you as text when you create or edit the barcode. And only at the moment of sending a print job, the specially formatted text is processed by the resident program into a barcode that will be printed.
For printing on a regular printer, there are also specialized programs for DOS or Windows.
These programs may contain their own barcode fonts, but are not available to other programs.
For UNIX systems, a module containing barcode fonts is used, which connects to the parallel port. Specially formatted text is converted into a barcode at the time of sending data to the printer.
Please note that when printing to a dot matrix or inkjet office printer, the print quality can significantly affect the ability to read the barcode by the scanner. It is advisable to always check the ease of reading the barcode with a scanner that will be used in reality.
There are specialized printers for on-site printing. These are either “direct thermal” or “thermal transfer printers”.
Both types of printers use a printhead that contains a certain amount of tiny heating elements. Printers often have built-in barcode fonts, which is especially important if you have a terminal, for example, running on UNIX, where the software for creating and printing labels is relatively expensive. Instead, the printer can print under normal ASCII text commands.
Direct thermal printer requires special paper pre-coated with transparent chemical film.
When the paper is heated by the print head element of the printer, the film turns black as a result of a chemical reaction. Symbols are formed by selectively heating elements of the print head, which overlaps the full width of the label.
In a thermal transfer printer, the heating elements of the print head generate enough heat to transfer the pigment from the special ribbon to the label.
There are several types of tapes. The cheapest and easiest to apply pigment tapes, but relatively easy to lubricate. Rubber bands are the most resistant to smudging, but also the most expensive and difficult to apply. Wax. resin tapes are a good compromise between price and quality.
Thermal transfer printers are more expensive than direct thermal printers and require regular ribbon updates. Typically, one roll of printing ribbon is used for two rolls of labels (lengthwise). However, they can print on any type of paper or other material such as polyethylene, foil, and the quality of the labels does not deteriorate over time from UV rays or heat. Both types of printers produce labels at roughly the same speed and cost. In general, these methods produce labels significantly faster than office dot matrix or inkjet printers.
Print quality and testing
Barcode data capture systems can become completely useless if they do not take care of adequate print quality. Barcode scanners require labels that are printed with a certain quality in order to read data reliably. Very often, when they think that the scanner is inoperative, the problem is poorly printed labels.
Stickers can be of poor quality for various reasons. The most typical cases are listed below.
- The ribbon has expired and the printed labels are too faint.
- Color combination of strokes and background is not acceptable.
- Software may not print exactly as per barcode specification.
- The reflectivity of the paper is insufficient.
- The print is too weak. contrast between dark strokes and light gaps may not be sufficient.
- There may be spots and gaps in the barcode as a result of the printing process.
- You may be trying to print a barcode that is too small. in a higher resolution than the printing process allows.
If possible, it is prudent to test the printed barcodes “for reading” with a scanner that will actually be used. This means that testing with a laser scanner is of little use if a CCD scanner is actually used in the warehouse.!
Things to Consider When Purchasing a Thermal Printer
Resolution Most thermal transfer printers have a resolution of 203 dots per inch (dpi). This means 8 dots per mm. While barcodes print perfectly at this resolution, text and graphics may appear slightly warped. Printers with 300 dpi are more expensive, but worth it if you need high quality printing of text and graphics. Print Width Thermal print heads are available in standard sizes. usually 2, 4, 6 and 8 inches. You need to decide what size of label you need and find a printer that can print that label in width. All manufacturers indicate the minimum label width that you can print on the printer, usually 25 mm. You can therefore use a 10cm printer to print 25mm labels, and have a margin for other label sizes in the future. A roll of labels can be made along the narrow edge (portrait orientation), or along the wide edge. Note. the barcode will print perfectly if the barcode is aligned along the print direction. Due to the operating conditions of the label strip transport mechanism, the barcode may not print as well if rotated perpendicular to the print direction. The resulting deviation in the width of the strokes / gaps can cause problems in scanning the barcode. Therefore, try to select the printer and label design that produces the best print results. Print Speed As a general rule, print speed increases with the cost of the printer. 50 mm per second, typical for a low-cost thermal printer and is quite suitable for small print volumes. Printers with a speed of 150 or 254 mm per second are suitable if print speed is a key parameter. Consumable Quantity This is basically how many labels you can load into the printer at one time, and is usually determined by the outer roll diameter (OD) that can be installed in the printer. The smaller the diameter, the more often you will need to insert a new roll. For low print volumes, this moment can be disregarded. Optional Devices Make sure the printer you choose supports all the optional features you may need, and when comparing for printers, make sure you are comparing for the same package. Some manufacturers double their after adding additional features.
- Additional memory. You may need it for printing large stickers.
- Remote keyboard (Keyboard Display Unit). allows you to print to a printer without connecting to a computer.
- Guillotine. automatic label cutting (especially for rolls with continuous label tape).
- Reverse rewinder. for winding printed labels onto a roll.
- Windows driver. This program allows you to install your printer in Windows. Therefore, you can print from any Windows application.
- Special software. programs specially designed for the creation and printing of stickers, with a very wide range of possibilities.

How to resize a template for a different cell size
If you purchased paper from another manufacturer, then you will need to adjust the downloaded template for a different cell size. The only parameter that is not configurable. this is the number of labels per line: the Tirika-store program cannot print more than three labels per line.
In order to configure the program for self-adhesive, divided into cells other than 64.6 x 33.8 mm, please start the Microsoft Office Word program and open the downloaded label template in it, then right-click on any label of the template and select “Table Property”:
In this window and you can change all the dimensions of the table. After making the changes, save the edited template and try to print labels. In the Tirika-Shop program, select the menu item Reports | Price tags small, in response to this, the program will open a Microsoft Office Word window for you, in which there will be a document with price tags, which you will send to print.
Printing barcodes on self-adhesive A4
This is an outdated version of the article about the printing functions in the Tirika-Store program. The information contained in this article is irrelevant for modern versions of the Tirika-Store program; we left this article on the site only to help users of previous versions of the program.
In order to print price tags on self-adhesive A4 paper, please:
1) Download a specially prepared template for small price tags. Copy the template (file with the RTF extension) to the \ Reports \ subfolder of the folder where the program was installed (most likely it will be C: \ Program Files \ Tirika Shop \ Reports \). If you are using Windows Vista or later versions of Windows, in order to copy this file to the correct folder you will need to read this article.
2) To print self-adhesive labels, you need to use only the Microsoft Office Word program, when using other programs, the fixation of the cells is lost. If you do not have Microsoft Office installed, unfortunately, you cannot print labels on self-adhesive. When writing this article, we used Microsoft Office Word 2007.
3) Buy A4 self-adhesive labels for which this template was prepared. We have prepared a template for printing labels for A4 sheet, divided into cells of 64.6 x 33.8 mm., 3 cells per line, 8 lines per sheet. Such sheets are sold, for example, by the Komus company (http://www.komus.ru/product/163221/)
Label tests were run with two different printers, Brother HL-2140 and Xerox Phaser 6010N. If with the first printer there was 100% printing in the cells, then for the second printer it was necessary to adjust the template, since the printer shifted the print to the side, and we needed to change the margin offset from the edge in the label template. For this:
- Print one test sheet of the price tags on purchased self-adhesive paper
- Measure the indent from the left edge with a ruler (error)
- Open the previously downloaded label template file in Microsoft Office Word
- Modify the template to account for this error. The figure below shows exactly how you can make these changes to the label template:
In the default template, the margins go from the edge of the paper: 0.81 cm to the left and 1.33 cm from the top (adjusted according to the paper purchased from Komus). After you have made your changes, save the template and close the Microsoft Office Word program.
In the Tirika-Shop program, select the menu item Reports | Small price tags. in response to this, the program will open a Microsoft Office Word window for you, in which there will be a document with price tags, which you will send to print.
How to insert a barcode into a template
The method is not entirely traditional, but at the moment this is the only way to insert a barcode into a template without spoiling it. Before reading this section, please follow the instructions in this article regarding installing the font. Code EAN13. In the same way, install any non-standard font on your computer (we experimented with the font Vrinda, but you can choose any other custom font).
1) After installing these two fonts, open the label template file in Microsoft Office Word.
2) Insert the # barcode1 # macro into the left price tag of the template (in small letters in English; the “sharp” sign before and after the macro name is required), and into the middle one # barcode2 # and into the right one. # barcode3 #
3) Select each of these macros with the mouse and change the font to Vrinda, at the same time increasing the font size:
4) Save the file, close Microsoft Office Word
5) The next step is to change the font. To do this, please open the template file saved in the previous step in the Notepad application included with Windows.
6) In the text that opens, you need to find the word Vrinda and replace it with the word Code EAN13, as shown in the figure below. After that, save the modified Notepad file and close the Notepad program.
7) Run the Tirika-Store program and select the menu item Reports | Price tags | Small. If you did everything correctly, price tags with barcodes will be printed.

How to create and print a label in Excel
Of course, in large organizations it is quite difficult to do without a special program for creating labels, but standard Microsoft Excel is quite enough to meet the needs of a small or medium-sized company.
The easiest way to print labels from an Excel document is to create a layout in a table. If you need several copies, then the layout is copied several times and sent to print. This is convenient if the name of the product must be on the label, without indicating its characteristics (manufacturer, expiration date, etc.)
To create a barcode, you need to use the TBarcode add-in, it can be downloaded from the developer’s website. This program integrates with Windows and can be used via Excel or Word. The creators provide a free test version, but after its expiration, you will have to pay for a license key.
Easy-to-use ready-made programs such as E-label or LablelJoy are also used to create labels. They use data from supporting documents, including not only Excel.
For example, the E-price tag can be integrated not only with Excel spreadsheets, but also with 1C price lists downloaded to your computer. In order to get started, you just need to select a template from the software library, as well as source table or document. Mark the lines or columns with a certain color (Yellow. supplier, etc.). After that, the program will independently enter information into the template, and the labels can be sent to print.
Printing labels in 1C: Retail
If an organization uses 1C in its work, then it can be used to create and send price tags and labels to print.
For example, the creation and printing of labels in the standard version 1C: Retail is carried out using the [Print labels and labels] command. You can familiarize yourself with the layouts, as well as make changes to them and specify the number of copies, in the [Printed Forms] section by opening the [Templates of labels, receipts and KKM price tags].
When all the parameters and characteristics are set, confirm the action by clicking [OK]. If you plan to use the created layout in the future, then you need to click [Save and save].
The creation of labels in 1C Retail 2.2, as well as in other configurations, may differ slightly (for example, in the names of sections), but the basic operation aLGorithm will be the same:
Open the software menu and select [Purchase], then open [Service] and enter [Print Labels].
Specify the print mode, click [Label Print], and then [Set].
Open the preview and, if everything is done correctly, send the layout to print.
Printing self-adhesive labels for bottles
For bottles with food and industrial liquids, the creation of strong, durable labels is required, therefore, entrepreneurs choose polyethylene, nylon or polypropylene film as a basis. But if you need to print a conventional self-adhesive label, then all the programs and tools listed above are suitable for creating a layout.
Of course, the process of creating a sticker on a bottle is a little more complicated in comparison with the development of standard labels, and requires care and accuracy of calculations. Therefore, in such cases, it is still better to purchase a specialized paid program and specialized consumables.
Barcode label printing without special software
Not everyone can afford to buy expensive label generation software, so in this article we will show you how to create and print a label on a conventional or specialized printer, without using special programs.
For the formation and production of stickers and tags with a barcode, specialized printing equipment is used. A label printer is a piece of equipment that transfers a given barcode image onto self-adhesive tape or thermal label. The speed and functionality of the printing device depends on the manufacturer of the equipment and the specific model of the device.
Desktop. designed for the production of self-adhesive labels. Printers of this class are usually installed directly at the workplace and connected to the main device, cash register, or PC.
Mobile. Due to the presence of a rechargeable battery, they can be used as portable equipment. A distinctive feature of the device is its small size, and some models also have a special handle for easy transportation from place to place.
Industrial printers. have high productivity and can produce up to 10,000 labels in 24 hours. The equipment belongs to professional devices and can be used without interruption throughout the entire shift.
Before sending a label for printing, you must first create a layout using graphic programs. Usually, when you buy a printer, test versions of label creation software are installed on it and after the trial period, you need to purchase a paid license key.
Not everyone can afford to buy expensive software, so in this article we will tell you how to generate and print a label on a printer without using special programs.
How to create and print a label in Word
You can print the label in Word in any of the following ways:
Using Word Tools. To prepare one or more labels for printing in Word 2010, go to the [Mailings] tab and open [Labels]. The [Envelopes and Labels] window will open, write the desired text, then specify the parameters of the future label and click [Create]. A grid with future labels appears on the sheet. If desired, you can add graphics or a barcode to them. To do this, use the TBarcode program.
Label Printing: An Overview of Online Services
You can also print barcode labels without using paid programs using one of the online graphic services. Here are a few of them:
Canva. Using this designer, you can create a layout of the future label from scratch, and then save the document in a suitable format. To work in the program, you will have to go through mandatory registration, you also need to know that only some of the layouts are free.
LiteBox. the resource is a cloud service and allows you to work with ready-made templates as well as to create your own. It only takes a couple of clicks to send a label to print. The developers provide only 14 days of free use of the program, then you will have to purchase a license key.

Printing a barcode on a printer
In this case, the printing of the required number of labels or price tags is carried out independently, or at a copy center and printing house.
Below we will tell you about independent options for printing barcodes:
On a laser printer, using a text editor or 1C.
Not a thermal printer, using special software.
Another way to create labels is a commercial scale with thermal printing function.
When creating barcodes, you must be guided by the recommendations for their creation.
The scanning beam recognizes colors as it reads the barcode, just like a person wearing glasses with red lenses. Therefore, there is an acute reaction to the alternation of dark and light stripes, creating a sharp contrast. Therefore, you can use blue, green, brown, black, white and yellow to print strokes. At the same time, in creating a barcode, it is permissible to use only one light and one dark color; it is unacceptable to create multi-colored stripes. The best option is a combination of black and white.
The main conditions for creating a barcode include:
The use of reflective materials (e.g. varnished).
The direction of the tape during the application of the image should be parallel to the applied strokes.
How to print a barcode on a regular printer, two popular ways:

Ways to print barcodes on adhesive labels and price tags
Self-adhesive tape is a tape designed to prevent price tags, barcode labels, etc. There are several options for printing on self-adhesive tape:
Flexo printing. Fast-drying liquid ink is applied to an elastic photopolymer form and under the influence of reduced pressure is printed on film, paper, cardboard, foil, etc. Suitable for creating large advertising labels and stickers.
Direct thermal printing. the thermal head of the printer comes into contact with the thermal label and, due to heating, it “burns out” in specific areas of the surface, so a given image or text appears. Labels created on direct print printers have a short life, quickly fade, and the image is simply washed off from moisture on the surface. This is a fairly economical option and, despite the shortcomings, is excellent for use on products with a short shelf life.
Thermal transfer printing is a method of applying a given text or image to a ribbon for its subsequent transfer using a thermal press onto the prepared material. Created on the principle of thermal transfer printing, labels are not susceptible to critical temperature changes, do not fade in direct sunlight, and are suitable for transferring images to wood, fabric, glass, plastic, leather and other materials.
Printing on a sheet label. carried out on a conventional inkjet or laser printer on A4 paper. It is the most budgetary option, suitable for individual entrepreneurs and small organizations. The disadvantages of this method include the fragility of finished labels, since there is no additional protective layer.
Create and print a barcode yourself (used for the internal needs of the company).
There are dedicated resources. generators of barcodes. The purpose of these resources is to help generate a universal barcode that all existing scanning equipment would be suitable for recognizing. To do this, use the guidelines below:
Best to create EAN8 or EAN13 barcodes.

To create a 2D code, the QR Code standard should be used.
In the input line, you need to enter only the information that is provided for by the relevant standard. For example, EAN13 has only 13 digits.
When creating 2D code, you do not need to enter a large amount of text information, since the text will be difficult to read.
The readability of the created barcode can be checked using a smartphone or tablet using the built-in camera.
Copy the document with the ready-made barcode to the PC desktop, then you can paste it into any graphic or text editor Word, Excel, etc. After that, correct the finished barcode in size so that no streaks are formed, and so that it does not become blurry or smudged (such a barcode cannot be recognized later).
