How to make and receive calls on Mac OS X with an iPhone

  • iPhone and Mac updated to iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite respectively
  • iPhone and Mac are on the same Wi-Fi network
  • iPhone and Mac are tied to the same Apple ID

You need to log in via FaceTime in OS X. After that, leave a tick in front of the phone number.

It’s all. Now, when making calls to the iPhone, which may be lying in the farthest corner, the call will go directly to your Mac. However, you don’t need to launch the FaceTime app.

After lengthy tests, I noticed that in OS X, the call notification is a couple of seconds late and the melody continues to play even after the caller hangs up and it is no longer possible to receive the call, although the corresponding button is available. I suppose it depends on the speed of your Internet Although on iPad there is no such problem.

How to call and send SMS from iPad and Mac

Hello everybody. To begin with, I, as always, have an interesting “story in the subject” for you.

After buying an iPhone 6 Plus, I wondered what ringtone I had. I call from another number to my phone, when suddenly the iPad in the next room starts to make sounds At the same time, the iPhone is silent. I was in a stupor for about 5 minutes. I started to climb in the iPhone settings. Only after some time did I realize that for some reason the iPad was in the mode of receiving calls. Somehow this iOS 8 innovation even flew out of my head. To prevent this from happening to you, I decided to write detailed instructions about calls and SMS

Let’s consider different cases. First of all on iPhone, enable the Settings-FaceTime-iPhone Cellular Calls checkbox:

Now you can continue tuning on other devices.

How to receive and reply to SMS on iPad, Mac and iPod Touch with an iPhone

This functionality appeared in iOS 8.1 and we have already received several questions on this topic in the Комментарии и мнения владельцев on the site. I will answer in detail.

  • iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Mac updated to iOS 8.1 and OS X Yosemite respectively
  • iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Mac are on the same Wi-Fi network
  • iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Mac are linked to the same Apple ID

The setup is simple. We go to the iPhone in Settings-Messages-Forwarding messages.

We see there all our devices that are tied to the Apple ID and logged into the iMessage application (Messages). Turn on the checkbox opposite the device from which we want to receive or send messages.

After some time (I have a few seconds), the code will come to the iPad.

We enter this code on the iPhone and press the “Allow” button. Now you can send SMS messages from iPad and receive them using iPhone.

This is done in the iMessage app (Messages). We start a new conversation. And if an email address that is an active Apple ID is not linked to a contact in your list, then you can only send an SMS or MMS message. You will understand this by the gray text SMS / MMS in the text input field.

Setting up and sending messages in OS X is completely the same.

How to make and receive calls from an iPad (iPod Touch) with an iPhone

  • iPhone and iPad updated to iOS 8
  • iPhone and iPad are on the same Wi-Fi network
  • iPhone and iPad are linked to the same Apple ID

Go to iPad settings. Settings-FaceTime-iPhone Cellular Calls. Turn on the switch if not turned on. By default, by the way, it is enabled. Also, there must be a check mark in front of the phone number.

If the iPhone is blocked at the time of the call (so the system understands that it is most likely not at hand), then the incoming call is sent to two devices at once. This is how it looks:

You can receive a call on both iPad and iPhone.

To make a call from iPad, you need to go to FaceTime and, opposite either the last name of the subscriber or the phone number, click the icon with the handset.

iPad will write that the call is going through the iPhone.

How to receive or send SMS from iPad if there is no iPhone?

This is a very common question, which also needs to be answered. Despite the fact that you can insert a SIM card into the iPad and use it to connect to LTE and 3G networks, there is no way to receive or send SMS to this SIM card using iOS.

I recently wondered at least receiving SMS, but there are no normal solutions. The crutch solutions are as follows:

SwirlySMS free is a package from Cydia. I need a jailbreak and iOS 6. 🙂 I understand that the package is not updated?

Even in 2014, Apple does not allow users to fully use the cellular module At the same time, the cheapest Android tablets for 100 can cope with this task And this is very sad.

2) Select Messages.

3) Enter your Apple ID and password.

How to Send and Receive SMS Messages on iPad and Mac

By default, SMS messages from iPhone can be received and sent to smartphones of other brands. However, they work differently on iPad and Mac. You can only exchange messages with those who also have Apple devices.

Luckily, you can change this and use SMS on all of your devices. Below we will show you how to do it.

On Mac

1) Open Messages.

Send and receive text messages (SMS) on your iPad or Mac!

2) From the menu bar, select Messages Settings.

3) On the iMessage tab, enter your Apple ID and password.

4) A confirmation message appears on the iPhone (and other devices) screen. Click OK.

Now you can go back to the first part of the instructions and enable call forwarding for your devices. Your iPad and Mac will now show up in the list.

It is very convenient to use messages on all your devices. Now you don’t have to worry about missing an important message.

How it works?

For SMS “relaying” to work, your Mac and iPhone must use the same Apple ID and be on the same network. The Messages app also syncs your regular SMS messages (in addition to the fact that you can send and receive them), so your message list looks the same across all your devices.

Typically, when sending a contact message from your Mac, it will try to send an iMessage first (by checking that person’s email address or phone number in Apple’s database). If the person is not using iMessage or has a non-Apple device, your Mac will simply send old SMS messages relayed through your iPhone.

Please note that your iPhone must be running iOS 8.1. If you don’t, check out our post on how to update your iPhone.

make sure you are signed in to iCloud

Your Mac and iPhone must be signed into the same iCloud account. Most people use the same account anyway, but if you’re not using iCloud yet, follow our previous post for more detailed setup instructions.

To quickly check iCloud status on Mac and iPhone:

  • Go to System Preferences and select iCloud. Your iCloud address appears to the left of your name
  • On your iPhone, go to Settings.iCloud and check your email address.

Both iCloud email addresses should be identical, but if not, just sign out of iCloud on the same device and sign in with the correct Apple ID.

Make sure both devices are registered with iCloud with the same Apple ID.

To begin

connect to the same wifi network

The first thing to do is make sure your Mac and iPhone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, otherwise it won’t work. Assuming both devices are on the same network (or at least your Mac is connected to the same router your iPhone is connected to), the rest of the process will be very simple.

enter the verification code on your iPhone

Shortly after enabling the text messaging feature for your computer as described above, a 6-digit verification code appears on your Mac’s screen.

Remember the number and enter it into your iPhone when prompted:

On your iPhone, enter the verification code that appears on your Mac.

Send SMS messages to iPad

The process of sending and receiving SMS messages on your iPad is pretty simple. However, before you start, you need to set up something called SMS Relay on your iPhone.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Select messages
  • Choose to forward text messages
  • Turn on the forwarding option to your iPad
  • Wait for the authorization code to appear on your iPad
  • Enter the code on your iPhone

Once completed, you will be able to use your iPad to send green bubble messages. Of course, in order to send these messages, you will need to be connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi or the built-in cellular service.

Sending SMS messages from Mac

As with the iPad, you need your iPhone before you can send messages from your Mac instead of other iOS devices. Here are the steps you need to take:

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  • Select messages
  • Choose to forward text messages
  • Turn on the forward to your Mac option
  • Wait for the authorization code to appear on your Mac
  • Enter the code on your iPhone

Now you can start sending messages to your non-iOS friends and family from the comfort of your Mac. This is extremely useful and very convenient so you can keep your eyes on the computer instead of reaching for the phone or missing a message.

Regardless of whether you are using a tablet or mobile phone, they are preferable to old text messages. Therefore, below I would like to offer you some of these apps that could help you brilliantly overcome the lack of text messaging support on iPad.

  • Izzade. is Apple’s instant messaging solution that allows you to exchange messages and multimedia content with all iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch users for free over the Internet. It is not exactly the same as text messages, but it is most similar to text messages, and it is very, very convenient. The fact is that it is not safe to enter your phone numbers on the Internet. You can be debited, signed up for an expensive paid subscription, added to spam lists, and so on. Therefore, most people are wary of such things, including me.

Having entered my phone number in the “SMS-center” program (not without some hesitation) and later sending several SMS from this application, I can write my observations:

  • The money for the SMS was really not charged
  • Paid subscription was not noticed
  • Spam did not come

Thus, I think that, at least at the time of this writing, the service is working honestly. But, naturally, I cannot give any guarantees in this case, the developers of this service decide everything.

At the bottom left there is also a “Settings” button, by clicking which you can specify whether you want to receive SMS delivery notifications and whether you need to show the number of characters when typing a message. What we have as a result

For many users of modern gadgets, it may seem surprising who needs to send SMS from iPad in our time of widespread use of various instant messengers, social networks and free mailings from the sites of mobile operators. However, there can be a wide variety of situations in life. For example, you might be too lazy to reach for your phone if your iPad is already at hand. Or the phone is out of power. Or it may be that you need to type a long text of your SMS. it is much more convenient to do this on the iPad. In turn, it’s a pity that the developers have not yet solved the problem of receiving SMS on the iPad. Anyway, it’s always interesting to expand the capabilities of your devices and try something new.

Receiving and sending SMS messages to iPad using Apple iMessage app

For owners of “smart devices” with iOS version higher than the fourth, the iMessage application has recommended itself. This program is designed specifically for messaging between Apple devices.

This specificity has both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, you don’t have to spend money to exchange SMS. Convenient usability, the presence of contacts “at hand” allow you to receive or send messages via iPad at any time, without interrupting important matters.

Watching a movie, listening to music or painstaking work on a document can easily be combined with lively correspondence.

The downside of the iMessage app is its focus exclusively on users of Apple devices. If the user’s relatives or friends use gadgets on another platform, it will not be possible to “connect” them a priori.

Programs for receiving and sending SMS messages on iPad

Apple iPad is a multifunctional, convenient and practical gadget, one of the drawbacks of which is the impossibility of working with traditional messages of the GSM standard. SMS and MMS. Many users note the importance of being able to receive messages on the iPad. this option expands the capabilities of the device. Sending messages using iPad is beneficial in a number of cases:

    • the phone is completely discharged;
    • there are no funds on the mobile account;
    • there is a desire to open up new possibilities of your own gadget;
    • faster typing of long messages thanks to the large screen.

The iPad software (iPod Touch) does not allow them to send SMS to mobile numbers. This issue can be solved by working with numerous sites that provide free SMS delivery services. This process is not convenient for everyone. most Apple device users prefer to use VoIP telephony to send messages.

Programs such as Skype, Mail agent, Viber, Hangouts allow you to send messages to subscribers connected to the Internet, but at the same time they are absolutely useless for those who use communications exclusively of GSM standard.

For happy owners of devices with iOS 8.1 (or OS X Yosemite) there is no reason to worry. thanks to the synchronization of devices via Bluetooth, the iPhone phone call is displayed on the iPad screen (using the HandOff function).

For owners of devices with iOS version higher than 4th, the best option would be to use the regular iMessage messenger. Older Apple devices will love the App Store apps that let you send or receive SMS messages using your iPad.

HandOff feature running iOS 8.1 (OS X Yosemite)

Developers of modern devices are fond of synchronization, involving all gadgets in contact with a person in cooperation. Mobile phone, tablet, laptop. now there is no emphasis on one thing.

Thanks to the HandOff function, you can receive messages on the iPad, make calls, work with documents simultaneously on three different devices. Convenience lies in the fact that this operation does not require switching from gadget to gadget. all changes in documents are recorded by each of them.

Didn’t have time to finish writing the text or send a message from the laptop. you can add it on the tablet (add it and send it using your phone)! Now the Mac platform is synchronized with the iOS platform. all devices of these lines communicate with each other via WI-FI in order to perform one, the most important function. To do this, all gadgets within the “family access” are tied to one iCloud account.

    Special SMS-sharing programs for iPad

In the Russian AppStore, you can download and install the SMS Center program. This application allows you to send up to 30 free SMS per month, exceeding the limit will require certain cash infusions from those who like to communicate. To send SMS, you have to enter the phone number (on whose behalf they are sent) and go through the verification procedure.

In addition, for the program to work, you need to connect to the WI-FI / 3G network. The disadvantage of the application is the lack of a function for receiving messages on the iPad, as well as the low reliability of its work.

EasySMS HD works with a micro SIM card using a 3G module to connect to the network. You can send only 5 SMS messages to iPad for free. The program can work with a limited number of mobile operators. The downside is its paid basis, limited compatibility, mandatory synchronization of the microSIM card with a phone or USB modem.

The UMS program from the Megafon operator allows you to send (receive) SMS and MMS messages using a special web resource that combines contacts from the phone book and social network accounts.

This allows you to switch between correspondence in the GSM format and online services. The advantage of the program is the ability to store all SMS-correspondence “in the cloud”, the disadvantage is its low security.
