How to reset the ink counter

The printer manufacturer (HP 2050, HP 4283, Deskjet 2130 and others) usually installs disposable cartridges on printing devices. Thanks to the built-in chip, the ink level is monitored, so a container, and not having a sensor, will NOT be able to work in such a device.

Resetting the ink level

To avoid purchasing new consumables, you can reset the ink counter on your HP printer:

  • The cartridge is removed from the device and placed on the working surface with the contacts facing up.
  • With the help of a small piece of tape, the contact is sealed, which is located in the upper left corner.
  • The container is installed in the device, after which you should click “OK”, print and remove the cartridge again.
  • The contact is glued in the bottom row on the right side. After placing the container back into the device, you will need to print. Next, the ink tank is removed.
  • To reset the counter that monitors the ink level, it is necessary to remove the tape from the container, which was applied first, and insert the cartridge into the printer.
  • The inkwell is removed and the second tape is removed. Next, the contacts must be carefully cleaned with alcohol. If you install a consumable in its place, the counter will be reset to zero. HP printer will show dye level reaching 100%.

You can also reset the counter as follows:

  • Three contacts in the top row on the right side are glued at the same time;
  • The cartridge is installed in the device and printing is performed;
  • After removing the tape, alcohol is used
  • The container is returned to its place, after which you can start test printing.

Based on the fact that on some models it is possible to reset the counter of the HP printer, experts advise using high-quality ink to avoid unwanted damage to the machine.

Ways to clear errors

In modern models of printers HP Laserjet, Deskjet 2130, HP 4283 and others, a system is installed whose task is to self-diagnose the device. In the event of a malfunction, the device reports flashing error codes on the display or flashing LEDs.

Although HP printing devices are reliable, they can also fail. Therefore, it is worth knowing how to reset an HP printer error.

Among the existing errors, a malfunction with code 79 is often encountered. This is how the device signals a software failure. To reset, the following sequence of actions is provided:

  • The device is disconnected from the power supply, after which you must wait at least 30 seconds
  • After turning on the printer, wait for it to initialize;
  • If the errors DO NOT disappear, you may need to reset the print queue or reinstall the drivers.

Displayed errors are cleared differently by printer model. For example, when you need to reset your HP Laserjet printer to return to factory settings, remember that all existing pages will be deleted from the printer’s memory.

  • Stops any printing if it was started during the reset and clears information about it.
  • All data stored in the device’s memory are deleted, including information about unprinted documents, installed fonts, and so on.
  • All user settings made during use will be returned to the original (set at the time of purchase).
  • Removes any software errors that occurred while using the printer.

To perform a soft reset on most HP printer models, do the following:

  • Open the HP printer software (the printer must be connected to your computer).
  • Go to the program menu “file”.
  • Find the sub-item “restart” and select it.
  • Confirm the action with the enter key.

  • Connect and turn on the printer. Wait for it to initialize.
  • If errors continue to appear, reset the print queue in Windows settings.
  • If the errors continue to appear after this, reinstall the drivers.

Resetting the cartridge counters on an HP printer

Due to the high cost of original disposable cartridges, many users try to refill cartridges on their own to extend their life. This allows you to significantly save on the operation of such office equipment.

There are two main methods used to calculate the remaining ink level in each cartridge:

  • By roughly counting with the introduction of an integrated chip in the cartridge (if the cartridge reports the end of ink). In this case, the user will see a message on the screen with a warning about low ink level and asking whether to continue printing. If you answer in the affirmative, it will be enough to timely fill up the missing ink in the cartridge for the printer to continue working.
  • In the event of an actual end of ink in the cartridge, a special sensor is triggered. In this case, the cartridge is completely blocked by the printer and is NOT usable anymore (except for HP cartridges with replaceable chips). Do not allow the ink cartridge to completely dry out. Otherwise, you will have to replace it with a new one.

It should be remembered, however, that in most HP printers, it is simply impossible to reset (zero) the cartridge. The manufacturer tries to exclude the possibility of using non-original ink as much as possible, so he tries to make this procedure impracticable. Reset can be performed on all 57, 56, 28, 27, and 21 cartridges. In some cases, cartridge reset works. 121.

How to reset HP cartridges?

All information about the amount of ink in the cartridge is transmitted by the chip directly to the printer itself, which can store information about the last four connected cartridges in memory. In order to erase the data in the current cartridge, several second cartridges must be connected to the printer one by one. But, since few people have several HP ink tanks in stock, you can go for a trick. make the machine believe that different cartridges were inserted into it. To do this, you can alternately glue different contacts of the chip to “deceive” the printer:

  • Cover the contact of the HP cartridge chip, marked in green in all three illustrations (you can use regular tape or tape). Other contacts Do not touch yet. Insert the cartridge into the printer and print a test page.
  • DO NOT peel off the green contact, glue the blue indicated contact. Insert the cartridge into the printer and print a test page.
  • Remove the tape from the blue-sealed contact. DO NOT peel off the green contact, glue the indicated contact with crimson color. Insert the cartridge into the printer and print a test page.
  • Remove the tape from the crimson-colored contact. DO NOT peel off the green contact, seal the contact indicated in red. Insert the cartridge into the printer and print a test page.
  • Remove the electrical tape from all contacts and wipe them with alcohol. Put the cartridge back into the printer.
  • Try to print something.

Important! The sequence of steps can be changed. Please note that the cartridge ID must be different on all test pages.

You can also do the following:

  • Cover the contact of the HP cartridge chip, marked in the picture below in green. Other contacts Do not touch yet. Insert the cartridge into the printer and print a test page.
  • DO NOT peel off the green contact, seal the contacts indicated in red. Insert the cartridge into the printer and print a test page.
  • Remove the tape from all contacts and wipe them with alcohol. Put the cartridge back into the printer.
  • Try to print something.

Reset Waste Ink Counter

The ink used to clear the nozzles before and during printing goes into the waste ink compartment. After emptying the ink compartment, you must reset the waste ink counter to continue normal printer use. In some models, the device will prompt you to reset after installing a new capacity. On second models, if the printer is locked and does NOT want to work, do the following to reset:

  • Remove, empty and reinsert the waste ink sump. This step is required! Do not proceed to the next if the compartment has NOT been removed from the printer.
  • Plug in the printer and turn it on.
  • Press and hold the “Cancel” button.
  • Do not release the “Cancel” button, press and hold the “Resume” button.
  • Continue to hold these buttons for 8 seconds and then release them.
  • The LEDs will light up, and the printer will wake up. If this happens, the waste ink counter has been successfully reset.

Attention! Never reset the printer counter to the actual emptying of the waste ink pad. If the waste ink compartment becomes full, ink may flow through the top of the reservoir and onto the motherboard. After that, the printer will most likely completely fail.

How to reset printer settings. How to reset the printer: instructions for dummies

Laser and inkjet printers do not have built-in hardware to measure the amount of ink remaining. Instead, software techniques for estimating ink consumption are used. The printer calculates the coverage rate for each letter sent to print. Based on this setting, the estimated amount of liquid ink or powder toner used is calculated. Information is recorded on a chip, which is usually found on a cartridge. After refilling most models with toner or ink, it becomes necessary to reset the printer.

During zeroing, information is erased not in the printer itself, but on the chip. Some refueling kits also include a separate chip to replace the old one that has been exceeded. There may be several such chips in color models. Each of them stores information about the remaining amount of paint for a particular color. Normal use of the device will be impossible until zeroing or replacing all chips that are exhausted.

How to reset any printer model

When refueling a cartridge at a service center, zeroing or replacing the chip is usually done by the technician performing the maintenance. It is recommended to clarify in advance whether this service is included in the refueling price. Otherwise, you risk being left with a refilled but non-working cartridge. If the device is not reset, to restore the correct operation of the device, you will have to contact the wizard again or find the instructions yourself.

Standard user manuals usually do NOT contain information on how to reset the chip counter. This is because printing equipment manufacturers are NOT interested in providing such data. Most companies recommend NOT refilling old consumables, but purchasing new ones. over, in some cases, their cost may even exceed the price of a new printer with a set of starter cartridges.

Try looking for the service manual for your printer model. This document contains detailed descriptions of actions, diagrams, and step-by-step instructions for troubleshooting. It is not intended for distribution to ordinary users, therefore, such a manual is available on the disc included in the package. The availability of the service instructions depends on the manufacturer of the device. Some companies provide it only to authorized service centers, others publish it for everyone in a separate section of the official website.

However, whatever the manufacturer’s policy for protecting proprietary information, you can find repair manuals for most popular models on thematic forums. When you find the document, open it and skip to the chapter on refilling and maintaining ink cartridges. Perform a number of the specified actions in the necessary order required in order to reset the printer. Typically, this will require a device reboot.
