How to reset the print queue on a printer

Clear and restart print spooler at command prompt

If you need to remove everything from the print queue and restart the print spooler itself, you need to run several commands in the command line.

Open the command line as administrator: one of the ways is to right-click on the “Start” menu and select “Command line (administrator)” from the menu that opens.

Type the command net stop spooler and press the Enter key, after its execution, enter the command DEL / F / S / Q% systemroot% \ System32 \ spool \ PRINTERS \ and press the Enter key, after executing this command, type net start spooler and press the Enter key.

This method can be performed in another way: go to “Services” (write “Services” in the search), open the “Print Manager” service = click on “Stop” = without closing the service itself, open% windir% \ System32 \ spool \ PRINTERS = remove all files from the opened folder = start the “Print Manager” service.

How to clear the print queue in Windows 10

In today’s article, we’ll look at various ways to clear the print queue in Windows 10. Consider canceling or restarting printing only certain documents, and canceling all documents at once.

than once I came across that someone sent a huge document to a shared printer and everyone waited about an hour until it was loaded and printed. There were also moments when the same document was sent to print several times and it was necessary to cancel the excess. Sometimes one of the documents sent to print got stuck and prevented everyone else from printing, it had to be restarted or canceled.

Restart or cancel printing of both individual documents and all at once

You can clear the print queue, restart or remove from printing a specific document in the settings of the printer itself.

Go to the “Start” menu, open “Settings” = Devices = on the left side select “Printers and Scanners” = on the right side, left-click on the printer in which you want to cancel or restart printing = after clicking on the printer, additional ones will appear below it options, select “Queue” (you can also find the printer icon on the taskbar, right-click on it and click on the name of the printer itself again to open the print spooler).

In this list you will see a list of all sent documents for printing, if printing does not go. look at the document that was sent in time before the others, maybe it is huge, then it will show that it is loading (its volume will change) and you need a little wait. If an error is written opposite it. try to restart the document, right-click on it and select “Restart”.

If you want to remove all documents from the print queue. go to the top left in “Printer” and select “Clear print queue”. Confirm removal of all documents from the print queue by clicking on “Yes”.

That’s all for today, if you know other methods or you have additions. write comments! Good luck

Clearing the HP printer print queue

HP technology is widely used due to its reliability and a large number of possible functions. That is why many users are interested in how to clear the queue of files prepared for printing on such devices. In fact, the printer model is not so important, so all the disassembled options are suitable for any similar technique.

Command line

The most time consuming and rather complicated method that can help you clear the print queue. However, there are situations when you simply cannot do without it.

First, run cmd. You need to do this with administrator rights, so we go through the following path: “Start”. “All programs”. “Standard”. “Command line”.

  • We make a right click and select “Run as administrator”.
  • Immediately after that, a black screen appears in front of us. Don’t be alarmed, this is what the command line looks like. On the keyboard, enter the following command: net stop spooler. It stops the service that is responsible for the print queue.
  • Immediately after that, we enter two commands in which the most important thing is not to make a mistake in any symbol:

    del% systemroot% \ system32 \ spool \ printers \.shd / F / S / Q
    del% systemroot% \ system32 \ spool \ printers \.spl / F / S / Q

  • Once all commands have been completed, the print queue should become empty. Perhaps this is due to the fact that all files with the SHD and SPL extensions have been removed, but only from the directory that we specified on the command line.
  • After completing this procedure, it is important to run the net start spooler command. It will turn print services back on. If you forget about this, then the subsequent actions associated with the printer can be difficult.
  • reset, print, queue, printer

It should be noted that this method is only possible if the temporary files that create a queue of documents are located in the folder we are working with. It is indicated in the form in which it exists by default, if actions are not performed on the command line, then the path to the folder differs from the standard.

This option is only possible if certain conditions are met. over, it is not the easiest one. However, it may come in handy.

    Interaction with the system process

At first glance, it may seem that this method will differ from the previous one in complexity and requires knowledge in computer technology. However, this is not the case. The option under consideration may become the most demanded for you personally.

    • At the very beginning, you need to launch a special Run window. If you know where it is located in the Start menu, you can launch it from there, but there is a keyboard shortcut that will make it much faster: WinR.
    • A small window appears in front of us, which contains only one line to fill. We enter into it a command designed to display all active services: services.msc. Then click on “OK” or press Enter.
  • The window that opens provides us with a fairly large list of relevant services, where we need to find the “Print Manager”. Next, we press RMB on it and select “Restart”.
  • It should be noted right away that the complete stop of the process, which is available to the user after clicking on the adjacent button, may lead to the fact that the printing procedure may be unavailable in the future.

This completes the description of this method. We can only say that this is a fairly effective and fast method, which is especially useful if the standard version is not available for some reason.

Clearing a Queue Using the Control Panel

A fairly simple method to clear the queue of documents prepared for printing. Doesn’t require a lot of knowledge of computer technology and is fast enough to use.

All printing devices that are connected to the computer or simply previously used by its owner are located right here. The printer that is currently working must be ticked in the corner. This means that it is installed by default and all documents pass through it.

We make a single right-click on it. In the context menu, select “View print queue”.

  • Deleting all files from printing is possible through a special menu that opens when you press the “Printer” button. After that you need to select “Clear print queue”.
  • This option for clearing the print queue is quite simple, as mentioned earlier.

How to clear the print queue on an HP printer

Offices are characterized by the presence of a large number of printers, because the volume of printed documentation in one day is incredibly huge. However, even one printer can be connected to multiple computers, which guarantees a constant print queue. But what to do if such a list needs to be cleared urgently?

    Delete temporary folder

It is not uncommon for such moments when the simplest methods do not work and you have to use manual deletion of temporary folders responsible for printing. Most often, this happens due to the fact that documents are blocked by a device driver or operating system. This is why the queue is not cleared.

    • To begin with, you should restart your computer and even the printer. If the queue is still full of documents, then you will have to proceed.
    • To directly delete all the data written to the printer’s memory, you need to go to the special directory C: \ Windows \ System32 \ Spool \.
  • It contains a folder called “Printers”. All information about the queue is stored there. You need to clean it up using any available method, but not delete it. It should be noted right away that all data will be erased beyond recovery. The only way to add them back is to send the file to print.
  • This concludes the consideration of this method. It is not very convenient to use it, since it is not easy to remember the long path to the folder, and in offices there is rarely access to such directories, which immediately excludes most of the potential adherents of this method.

    BAT file

In fact, this method is not much different from the previous one, since it is associated with the execution of the same commands and requires the above condition to be met. But if this does not scare you and all the folders are located in the default directories, then you can proceed with the action.

    • Open any text editor. Typically, in such cases, a notepad is used, which has a minimal set of functions and is ideal for creating BAT files.
    • Immediately save the document in BAT format. You don’t need to write anything in it before.

Do not close the file itself. After saving, write the following commands to it:

    del% systemroot% \ system32 \ spool \ printers \.shd / F / S / Q
    del% systemroot% \ system32 \ spool \ printers \.spl / F / S / Q

  • Now we save the file again, but don’t change the extension. Out-of-the-box tool to instantly delete print queues at your fingertips.
  • To use it, you just need to double click on the file. This will replace the need for you to constantly type a set of characters into the command line.
  • Please note that if the path for the folder is still different, then the BAT file must be edited. This can be done at any time using the same text editor.

Thus, we have reviewed 5 effective methods to remove the print queue on an HP printer. It should only be noted that if the system does not “hang” and everything is working normally, then you need to start the removal procedure from the first method, since it is the safest.

How to clear the print queue on a printer

Users in offices and at home send documents for printing, in which an error can creep. Often the user realizes that he made a mistake when he has already started the file for printing. Accordingly, sometimes you need to quickly cancel printing on the printer and prevent damage to the paper.

    Clearing the queue

To cancel printing of documents in the queue, the user needs to take the following steps (relevant for all versions of Windows):

    • Find the triangle-shaped icon in the lower right corner. Click on it with the left mouse button. Find the printer symbol and right-click on it. If the symbol of the printing device is not displayed in the tray, then you should look for it among the symbols located next to.
    • In the drop-down list, select “Open all active printers” if the user wants to cancel. Or “Pause document printing” if the user wants to pause it.
    • After selecting active devices, you should enter the “Document” tab.
    • In the drop-down list, select “Cancel”.
    • The system will ask if you really want to cancel. You need to confirm the action.

    This completes the printing procedure.

    Emergency Print Cancellation

The easiest way to stop the process of transferring a digital document to a paper sheet is to turn off the printer. To do this, just press the button to disconnect the device. The method always works, regardless of the printer model, be it Samsung, HP, Brother, Canon or any other devices.

However, the print queue, which is set and lies in the computer memory, is not always cleared automatically. The next time the printer is restarted, it sends the file to the printing device again. To avoid this, it is recommended to always flush the queue buffer after disconnecting.

    Manual cleaning

In addition to the automatic mode, the user can perform forced cleaning manually, since everything that is transferred to the printer remains in the computer memory in a special folder:

    • Go to drive C.
    • Open the Windows folder, then System32 and find the Spool directory in it.
    • Double-click to open it. Go to the “Printers” catalog.
    • Now delete its contents by selecting files with the left mouse button. Then, right-click and select “Delete”.

Thus, manual cleaning is performed and all printing tasks are removed.

    Process reboot

If, after stopping printing, the procedure does not resume or an error begins to appear, then the manager should be restarted:

    • Click together the keys on the “WinR” keyboard.
    • In the drop-down window, type the command “services.msc”.
    • The services window will open.
    • Find “Print Manager”, right-click on it (RMB) and select “Restart”.
    • This will remove documents from the print queue.

    Through the command line

Another technique for deleting files from printer memory and canceling the queue:

    • Type “WinR” on the keyboard. In the field that opens, write cmd. This is how the command line is invoked on a Windows system.
    • The following codes must be written in the command line: netstopspooler. This is the stop of the procedure. Enter and click “Enter”.
    • del% systemroot% system32spoolprinters.shd is the shredding of documents with the.shd extension. Enter and press the “Enter” button.
    • del% systemroot% system32spoolprinters.shd. deletes files with the.spl extension. Do not forget to press “Enter”
    • netstartspooler. The dispatcher service starts. Press “Enter”.

    The queue is not cleared

If the queue is not cleared by any of the above methods, then you should try uninstalling the printer drivers and reloading them. Before that, you need to clean the “Printers” folder.

Another easiest way to clean up is to restart your computer. This method usually helps to solve problems with the printer.

Working with a print queue in Windows

    • First, you need to open the folder with printers:
    • If you have WindowsXP installed on your personal computer, open the start menu (in the lower left corner) and find there an element that will be called “Printers and Faxes”. We carry out a similar series of actions if Windows Server 2003 is installed.
    • If the operating system of the PC is WindowsVista, click the Start button and look for an item called Control Panel. Next, a window will appear with many folders with the services of your PC. In this quantity, you will have to find the Hardware and Sound folder. When you open it, look for an element called Printers. We do the same with WindowsServer 2008.
    • If you have WindowsServer 2008 R2 or Windows 7 as the operating system, we carry out a number of the same actions as in option a), but the elements we need will not be called Printers and Faxes, but Devices and Printers.
    • For users of the latest generation of operating systems. Windows 8 and Windows 10. click on the magnifying glass in the lower left corner and type Control Panel in the search bar. The standard panel from Windows 7 will open, then go to Hardware and Sound and click on Devices and Printers.
    • Now we need to open the print queue. Since this is done differently on different operating systems, I described each separately:
    • For users of Windows 2003, WindowsXP, WindowsVista and WindowsServer 2008, you need to double-click the left mouse button on the device you need, the list of which will be right in front of you. On printers, this is usually the model name and a picture of the printer or fax.
    • If you have Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows Server 2008 R2 installed. right-click the required printer once. if you have several of them. and select View print queue from the context menu that opens.

In 7, and 2008 R2, it happens that there is only one shortcut for the printer and fax drivers, since they have a common port. To check the shortcut for combining, you need to open the context menu and select Printer Properties there. If you see the option Printer Driver% model_printer%, then everything is correct and you have a printer driver.

    • How to remove the print queue:
    • If you want to delete all print jobs, first click Printer and then the Clear Print Queue button.
    • To cancel not all tasks, but only those that you need, do the following: click on the desired task to select, and then click Document. After that click Cancel.

If the menu item Clear print queue is grayed out and is not pressed, it is inactive. To activate, you will need to open a shortcut as administrator. To do this, right-click on the shortcut and select Run as administrator. If there is a password on the administrator account, you will have to enter it.

    • Click Yes in the displayed dialog box and wait for the print queue to clear. If this does not happen, repeat the steps a few more times. In case of several unsuccessful attempts in a row, you need to restart the personal computer and repeat the steps again.

Working with a print queue in macOS 10.5

    • Press the AppleMenu button and select the SystemPreferences option in the dialog box that opens.
    • Next, we will open a window with folders from which we need to select PrintScan (the name varies in different versions, but the root is the same).
    • A new window will display a list of printers connected to your device. Select the one you want and click the OpenPrintQueue button to the right of the list.
    • A list with print jobs will be highlighted, with which we will work. In earlier versions of macOS, deletion from the queue was done by pressing the Delete key, but in later versions it was replaced by a more user-friendly icon of a cross to the right of the task.

How to work with the print spooler service on a printer

It happens that the printer jams paper and stops working at the moment when it is halfway to the exit. Often this happens precisely with old printers, in which the paper feed gum has worn out and is already doing its job poorly. Almost all people who often use a printer could have such a problem. printing a large document simply went wrong, went awry, etc.

As a result, many simply continue to print the spoiled document, wasting precious paper. They don’t even know how to simply remove a corrupted task at the software level and not incur material losses.

To delete the queue on the printer that is connected to your computer, you will need to go through a series of steps detailed below.

Working with a print queue in macOS 10.4

    • In the window that opens with a set of folders, you need to select the Utilities folder.
    • A new window will open with a set of utilities in which double-click PrinterSetupUtility
    • A new window has opened in front of you with a list of connected printers. In it we select the one you need based on the model name.
    • Another window will be highlighted. the last thing we need. in which we select the desired task with one click and click on the large crossed out red circle in the upper left corner.

This concludes the instructions for clearing the print queue. I hope this article solved your problem and was helpful to you. Now it will not be difficult for you to restore the correct operation of the printer after any failure.

accessing the printer queue and canceling print jobs from the Mac dock

This is the simplest approach, and should work for most OS X users. The printer spool will be invisible unless an active print job is queued, paused, or attempting to print, so assuming you are in that situation, simply search for the printer icon in the Mac Dock, when you hover over the printer icon, the printer name (or IP address, like here) will be displayed, click it to open the printer utility:

Once you enter the printer utility, select the print jobs you want to remove from the queue and click the (X) buttons next to their names to remove them from the print job, this will cancel the job and delete it. turn.

You can also select a print queue item and press Command Delete to delete it, or remove it from the jobs menu.

    Possible causes of problems

Before you start fixing any problem or error, you need to know exactly about its presence. Hanging documents in the queue is possible for several reasons and it is not always necessary to clear or reset all jobs. The reasons may be:

    • Printer software errors.
    • Windows operating system problems.
    • The presence of viruses on the computer or incomplete elimination of the consequences of their actions.
    • Temporary “glitch” of the printer, which is solved by a simple option to clear its memory. You need to turn off the device from the outlet, and after a while, turn on the power again.

When printing documents and pictures of large size, there are situations when the document may take a long time to load for printing or freeze. This is not a problem and no user action is required. You just need to wait a bit. It is worth sounding the alarm only when the dimensions indicated in the figure below are equal and the printing has not started.

    Windows services

Windows operating systems have various services that perform a wide variety of tasks. Among them is the service of the print spooler. The role of this snap-in is extremely simple and important enough. to control printing on your computer. Stuck printing problems may be related to it. An inexperienced user will not be able to accurately verify such a fact.

All that can be done in our case is to try to restart this service. To do this, follow these instructions:

    • Through the start we get to the control panel.
    • Among the large list we find the section “Administration”.
    • From the list of shortcuts, click on “Services”.
    • In the list we are looking for the “Print Manager” snap-in.
    • We restart it.

What is it, why it turns off and how to start.

    Clearing the temporary folder

Few people know that when printing, the system creates temporary files in which it writes all the information necessary to perform the operation. In the absence of such files and information, respectively, the list of files for printing will be empty, which is what we need.

You can find the folder you need at C: / Windows / System32 / spool / Printers. If Windows is not installed on the C drive, then the drive name in the path must be changed to the current letter. You only need to delete the files in the folder, not the Printers directory itself. After uninstalling, restart your computer or laptop.

Experts recommend stopping the print service before deleting files from the folder, and re-enabling it after restarting. How to do this is described in the previous section.

How to cancel printing and print jobs in Mac OS X

If you’ve ever printed anything from a computer, you inevitably ended up trying to print something that you soon discovered was unnecessary. In any case, instead of continuing with the print job and wasting ink and paper, it is best to cancel the print job or printer jobs. There are several ways to undo printing in Mac OS X, we will show you the easiest one with the simple printing tool that comes with all Mac computers.

The printer management utility and all items in the print queue in OS X can be accessed in two ways, and this print tool shows all the print jobs that are in the queue and allows you to manually interact with them to cancel and postpone print jobs for any and all printers related to Mac.

Open the print queue in settings to cancel print jobs

Another variant. to access the print queue from the system settings of the printer, you will find yourself in the same place as in the previous method. Do this if, for some reason, the printer icon does not appear in the OS X dock, or if you prefer to follow the settings route:

    • Open the Apple menu, go to System Preferences and select Printers.
    • Select the active printer and click the “Open Print Queue” button
    • Select and cancel print jobs of your choice, canceling them and removing them from the print queue

This is what the printer queue button looks like in OS X:

Managing queued jobs is the same regardless of how you access the printer utility:

It doesn’t matter which method you use to access the print queue on your Mac, cancel, hold, resume, or delete anything. are the same. This also applies to all versions of OS X, be it Mavericks as shown here, or OS X Yosemite, or any other version on Mac.

In some rare situations, the printer queue refuses to behave and either does not accept input or does not even load. If you have a really terrible printing situation, you can always completely reset the entire printer management system in Mac OS X, which almost always solves the problem, although this will require a new printer setup.

If for some reason you need to view your print history, the cups feature works to quickly show this information through your web browser (yes, seriously, the web browser looks at your print history!).

By the way, depending on your needs and work environment, it is often sufficient to simply print a PDF file that can be emailed and accessed universally from virtually any device in the world. And it definitely outperforms the archaic method of using some problematic machine to dye ink on sheets of highly modified compressed dead wood fibers, but sometimes printing on physical paper is still necessary.

    Forced cleaning methods

The arrangements for removing documents from the queue are not always so smooth and simple. Often you have to resort to a variety of sophisticated options to remove the print queue on the printer. This section will focus on coercive ways to succeed. Use them if the standard one through the dispatcher did not help.

If the problem with clearing the printer queue is of a system nature, then the methods above can only help for a while and the troubles come back. In this case, try reinstalling the drivers for your printing device model. In some cases, you need to reinstall the entire operating system.

As a temporary option, you can use a special bat file. To do this, create a text file with the.bat extension. Insert the text into the file itself.

    Clean up the print queue

Right-click on the “My Computer” icon and select “control”.

In the window that appears, double-click on the “Services and Applications” item, then double-click on the “Services” item.

A list of services will appear on the right side of the window, among which we need to find the “Print Spooler”. We click on it with the right mouse button and select the “stop” item.

Then we need to delete all files from the folder: C: WINDOWSsystem32spoolPRINTERS

Now we return to the services and find the “Print Spooler” again. Right-click on it and select “start”.

Done, now you can go to “Printers and Faxes” and make sure that the list of print jobs is empty.

The printer’s print queue is not cleared. How to clean?

Today we will analyze another point that will make your life easier, and maybe you can help someone.

As the title suggests, this is about clearing the printer’s print queue. Such a need may arise due to some kind of error during printing. For example, the current print job ended with an error and is not cleared from the queue, respectively, all subsequent print jobs will be queued and wait for the previous one to complete. The problem is solved quickly and is not difficult. The most impatient ones can immediately visit the end of the article, where we automate the cleaning of the print queue using a bat file.

Also at the end of the article there is a VIDEO where I put everything on the shelves.

You need to go to “Start. Control Panel. Printers and Faxes”.

If you do not find the “Printers and Faxes” item, switch the control panel to the classic view, to do this, click on the “switch to classic view” link, or click on the “Printers and other equipment” item, and in the window that appears, select the “printers and faxes “.

As a result, you should have such a window.

In the list of printers connected to your computer, double-click the one whose queue we want to clear. In the next window that appears, we stand on the line with the task and in the context menu (right-click) select the item “cancel”.

If the job is canceled, the printer will start printing all other print jobs.

The most interesting thing occurs if the current hung task is not deleted, but continues to hang in the queue.
Then the solution aLGorithm is as follows:

We automate the process of deleting the queue (.bat)

Agree that it is too inconvenient to carry out the entire sequence of actions from the first paragraph every time. Therefore, we automate the entire process. ?
This method of clearing the print queue is actually no different from the first one, with the only exception that all items from the first method are performed automatically using the “batch file” (files with the.bat extension)
    1. So, to clear the print queue, just download the clearprint.bat file and run it. In Windows 7, you need to run the file with administrator rights (eg mouse button. run as administrator). After starting, we wait for the file to be executed (about 5 seconds).
    2. Done, the print queue is empty, which means we can continue to work on our affairs.

I recently recorded a video on how to clear the print queue. See rate.
