How to reset toner on a brother printer

Brother Printer Toner Reset Guide

Brother printing device manufacturers equip their equipment with a security chip that locks the printer when the cartridge reaches its end of life. As a consequence, it is difficult to reuse the ink tank after refilling. Since the cost of consumables is quite high, machine users have to reset the toner counter.

Resetting the photo roll

The drum (photodrum) is one of the main components of a laser printer. Like a cartridge, it has its own resource. The drum is programmed from the factory to print a certain number of pages. When the counter reaches the maximum value, the message “Replace the drum unit” (or something similar) appears on the printer screen and printing is blocked.

  • or really make a replacement for a new photo roll;
  • either do zeroing to continue printing.

How to reset toner on a brother printer

To reset the toner counter for monochrome printers manufactured by Brother, an aLGorithm is used that is quite complex for an ordinary user to understand. Therefore, a hardware implementation of the toner counter reset button was developed. As an example, we took the Brother HL-2132R, which uses cartridges of a small nominal capacity (about 1000 pages) and therefore needs to reset the toner counter quite often. Resetting the counter for a good-printing cartridge also helps to use that cartridge’s toner life to the end.

A bit of theory. When a new cartridge is installed in the printer, the gear on it presses with its protrusion on the drive of the cartridge presence flag. After starting the engine of the device, this gear turns 1/2 turn and does not rotate anymore during the further operation of the printer. In the process of rotation, the gear 2 times removes the pressure from the drive of the cartridge presence flag. The machine interprets this fact as a signal to install a new cartridge and resets its internal counter of cartridge prints. If before this fact the “Toner” error was indicated, then it is reset and the indicator goes out. Electrically, the cartridge presence sensor is a transistor optocoupler. The emitter of the phototransistor is connected to the common wire, and the collector output through the pull-up resistor is connected to the power wire. The signal from the collector goes to the main board. When the optocoupler slit is open, the signal is close in level to zero potential; when the slit is closed, the signal is high. The idea of the reset button is to connect a normally closed button in series with the phototransistor, by pressing which simulates the installation of a new cartridge. In this case, the button does not interfere with the normal normal operation of the sensor.

Required materials: 2 pieces of thin insulated wire 10 cm long and a normally closed (N.C.) panel mount button with nut:

Tool: soldering iron, soldering supplies, stationery knife.

  • Remove the left side panel. To do this, pull out the paper tray, open the front and back covers. First remove the upper rear hook of the side panel, then slide the rear of the panel down a bit, then remove the front upper hook. Then the left panel is removed.
  • Lift up the top panel. It is enough to remove the side and front left hook:
  • We remove the indication and control board. It is fastened with two latches to the frame of the device. Disconnect the ribbon cable to be removed from the main board.
  • In the removed left side panel, make a hole to accommodate the button. The location of the hole can be seen in photos 3 and 4. Install the button and fasten it with a nut:
  • User manual text:

Open the front cover. Press and hold the GREEN button for 4 seconds until all four lights come on. As soon as all indicators light up, release the GREEN button. Close the front cover.

Open then close the front cover. 3 seconds after the start of the engine of the device (not to be confused with the fan!) 2 times press the BLACK button.

Of course, this scheme also applies to other Brother printers and MFPs using this cartridge identification scheme.

    Soft toner reset

Developers create additional maintenance functions for their equipment. Among them is a paint dumping tool. It runs only through the built-in display, so it is not suitable for all users. If you are that lucky owner of a device with a screen, follow these steps:

    • Turn on the all-in-one and wait for it to be ready to go. During the display of the inscription “Please wait” do not need to press anything.

Next, open the side cover and click on the “Clean” button.

On the screen you will see a question about replacing the drum, to start the process click on “Start”.

Close the side cover if the corresponding message appears on the screen.

Now you can go to the menu, move around it using the arrows to get acquainted with the state of the counter at the moment. If the operation was successful, its value will be equal to 100%.

As you can see, zeroing paint through a software component is not difficult. However, not everyone has a built-in screen, and this method is not always effective. Therefore, we recommend that you pay attention to the second option.

How to reset the toner counter for your Brother printer

The instructions below will work best for most Brother printing machines as they are all similar in design and quite often include the TN-1075 cartridge. We’ll look at two ways. The first is suitable for users of MFPs and printers with a built-in screen, and the second is universal.

Reset Toner Counter for Brother Printer

Almost all Brother printers and MFPs are equipped with a built-in mechanism that keeps track of printed pages and blocks ink when it is supposed to run out. Sometimes users, after refilling a cartridge, encounter a problem in which the toner was not detected or a notification appears asking to replace it. In this case, you must reset the ink counter to continue printing. Today we will show you how to do it yourself.

    Manual reset

The Brother cartridge has a reset sensor. It needs to be activated manually, then the update will be successful. To do this, you need to independently remove the components and perform the rest of the actions. The whole procedure looks like this:

    • Turn on the printer, but do not connect to the computer. Be sure to remove the paper if installed.
    • Open the top or side cover to access the cartridge. Do this action, taking into account the design features of your model.

Remove the cartridge from the equipment by pulling it toward you.

Disconnect the cartridge and drum unit. This process is intuitive, you just need to remove the latches.

Insert the drum part back into the device as it was previously installed.

The zero sensor will be located on the left side inside the printer. You need to put your hand through the paper feed tray and press this sensor with your finger.

Hold it and close the lid. Expect the start of the work of the apparatus mechanisms. Then release the sensor for a second and press again. Hold until the engine stops.

  • It remains only to mount the cartridge back into the drum part and you can start printing.
  • If, after a two-way reset, you still receive a notification that no toner is detected or ink has run out, we recommend that you check the cartridge. Refuel if necessary. You can do this at home, using the instructions attached to the device, or contact the service center for help.

We have covered two available methods to reset the toner counter on Brother printers and MFPs. It should be borne in mind that some models have a non-standard design and use cartridges of a different format. In this case, the best solution would be to use the services of service centers, since physical intervention in the components can provoke device malfunctions.
