How to set up a printer over Wi-Fi
Today, technologies allow printing not only documents or any other information from a computer, but also from a mobile phone, tablet and other wearable electronics thanks to a wireless Wi-Fi connection. A mobile phone, by the way, is the most relevant thing with which you have to print this or that information.
The very first thought that comes to mind is to restart the router, as well as restart the printer itself. In most cases, these methods will fix the problem, but only if you have access to them. This situation is familiar to many who have tried wireless printing at least once. In order to understand the access problem, first consider the peripheral equipment (external equipment used to input or output information).
To configure the printer via a WI-FI router, you first need to connect the PC to the printer.
Perform the following steps if you have an Epson l355:
- Connect the printer to power, turn it on and check if the cartridge is installed.
- Put paper in the tray.
- Click on the “Network Information” button.
Next, a dialog box will appear in which you need to put the wireless mode on:
- Open Google chrome, opera or another browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the search bar and enter the access point credentials
- In the Wi-Fi / WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) network tab, turn on the UPU and enter the PIN code of the printer adapter, which we printed.
- We hold the Wi-Fi button on the printer until it flashes red.
- Next, go back to the router settings and click “Configure adapter”. The search will be performed automatically and the connection will be established.
- The final steps will be to download and install network and printer drivers.
If you have a branded driver disc, then it will be better to use it. Using Explorer, open the folder that contains the installation file and double-click to activate it. Some manufacturers load drivers for two types of operating systems on disk, so you should check this if you are not sure. You can make sure by going to My Computer, right-clicking and selecting Properties from the menu. A window will appear that will show information about your OS.
If auto search did not work, then go to its menu, select Settings and click “Search for a printer connected to the network”.
After the driver has been installed, try printing a test page. If everything went well for you, then I can congratulate you. you were able to set up your printer for wireless printing.!
Thus, we answered the question “how to set up the printer to print via WI-FI?” on the example of Epson. Similarly, you can configure the printer via WI-FI HP-models.
Is it possible to make a Wi-Fi printer from a regular printer
For easy orientation in the printer settings, you need to understand the variety of the device interface. There are several options, each of them has its own purpose.
- With a wired USB port, the printer is connected to the device directly through a high-speed bus. By default, the bundle contains a laptop or PC and a router. The owners of such a technician are primarily interested in how to print not only from a computer, but also from other mobile devices.
- With Ethernet. it happens only in expensive devices, it is designed to be connected to an MFP hub. Technology fully meets the needs of its owners.
- With Wi-Fi technology. almost all modern models have a Wi-Fi module for a printer, but not in all cases it is operational. Branded software sometimes refuses to function on a smartphone or tablet.
To connect the MFP to a local network as an independent device, you need to equip it with an interface for working in a network (Wi-Fi adapter for a printer). Wireless technology is considered to be a simple and successful solution. Manufacturers offer a wide variety of print servers to choose from, from cheap to expensive, which can easily convert a local printer to a public one.
Important! Virtual technology (with a Wi-Fi adapter for a printer) allows you to use additional features: print documents from a mobile device, send tasks via e-mail, and perform an action via the Internet. It is enough to choose a print server that is suitable in terms of functionality and install it.
Configuring for Network Operation
To obtain the expected result, access to the printing device must be open. After entering the “start”, you need to move to “devices and printers” and find the current model of equipment.
After clicking on the MFP shortcut, select the “printer properties” block, go to “access” and set the permission for general access for all users. Once completed, anyone with access can connect and print the required documentation.
Important! Fine tuning will make the printer publicly accessible to all trusted mobile devices and PCs that are connected via Wi-Fi.
How to connect to a remote printer over the Internet
Many users, who successfully coped with the task of the Wi-Fi module for the printer, are racking their brains over the problem of how to properly connect the printer via the Internet.
Experts recommend debugging in two stages: from setting up the personal computer itself to which the MFP is connected (via a cable) to admitting a secondary device to the network, with the right to print documents.
Important! If there are several personal computers, laptops or mobile devices in the house, you will have to repeat the second stage separately for each one. Otherwise, you should not expect the bundle to work and print without problems.
What is Wi-Fi Print Server
A Wi-Fi print server or print server is a standalone network device with a minimum size. It refers to intermediate devices that help to connect the local network and MFP.
The meaning of its work lies in the possibility of sharing equipment for a group of users, using a wireless or wired network.
Important! The advantages of the Wi-Fi print server for MFPs include the absence of a permanently working secondary computer, and the disadvantages include the need to purchase additional equipment.
How to make a print Wi-Fi server yourself
The need to print a large number of materials and the inconvenience of a bulky design lead users to think about how to make a Wi-Fi printer from a regular printer. There are several options for solving the problem.
Configuring Internet Printing
Anyone on the network can use open access for printing. The convenience of this approach lies in the absence of the need to connect each of the devices available at home separately.
Before setting up printing via the Internet, you need to check the network for errors, make sure that all gadgets are visible in the network environment, and the MFP is fully functional and the correct drivers have been installed on it.
Open access to printing via Wi-Fi technology is performed according to a step-by-step aLGorithm:
- In the section “control panel” you need to find the block “printers and faxes”.
- In the list that appears on the screen, find the column “properties”.
- In it, select “access” and move to “general access”.
- In the block “security” mark the icon “print for all users”.
Important! The specified procedure is performed only after debugging the network MFP and checking the functionality of the “router-printer-PC” link.
To print information on any peripheral equipment, Google has come up with a special program. “virtual printer”. To get started you need:
- Connect the equipment that is connected to the PC to the cabinet. Chrome is opened on the device and goes to the Google account.
- In the browser settings, they look for a “virtual printer” and click on the “configure” shortcut.
- After activating the “add equipment” block, a list of all gadgets will open. In order for them to be able to connect automatically to the functionality in the future, just check the corresponding box.
- In the “manage printers” menu, they go to your Google account, after which a working device will be added.
Important! For Windows devices, there is a general rule: an authorized Chrome must be installed on the PC. The same account is used for equipment.
The performance check is carried out according to the standard principle: the documentation is opened in the application and sent to print. After sending the file, the Chrome tab will automatically open, in which you need to clarify the name of the peripheral equipment. Otherwise, the procedure is similar to the standard one: the type of paper, format, color or black and white performance, etc.

How to make a print Wi-Fi server
How to make a Wi-Fi printer right? To create such an autonomous device, you will need to purchase:
- a router that supports a print server and has a USB connector on the case (for connecting external gadgets);
- a personal computer from which the device will be configured;
- printer with additional devices, which include an installation disc, USB cable, etc.
Important! The printer can be connected both through mobile PCs (laptops and netbooks) and a stationary computer (provided it is connected via a cable to the router). But if the device does not support wireless printing functionality, then work through peripheral access will not work.
Before configuring the device, it is necessary to activate the print server support on the router itself. For this you need:
- Go to the web-based management interface of the router.
- Find the “print server settings” or “print server” tab in the menu. The section can be located in the block “USB devices or applications”, “multimedia” (the subsection depends on the router model).
- Check the box next to the “enable print server” button.
Important! After accurately completing the above steps to debug the print server for a printer with USB Wi-Fi, you must save all the changes made.
Wi-Fi Printer Setup
To configure the printer via Wi-Fi, you first need to configure the very connection of the computer with the printer.
To configure WI-FI Epson printer via WPS, you need to do the following:.
- First, turn on the printer and install the cartridges.
- Prepare the printer for use. Add paper.
- Print out the network configuration by pressing the button “Network information”.
Wireless mode. Off (must be turned on)
WPS-PIN Code. 15549723 (each printer has its own code, like an access point)
Setting up the printer via a Wi-Fi router
We perform the ritual ceremony of turning on WPS on the access point.
Enter 192.168.1.1 (192.168.0.1) in the address line. As a rule, most networks are configured for these addresses. But there may be differences! Enter the login and password of the access point.
Find the tab Wi-Fi / WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup). The tab on your router / modem may be in another menu, but the meaning is clear.
Turn on WPS itself, if disabled. Enter the adapter PIN obtained on the network configuration sheet. In our case, it is 15549723.
Next, press the Wi-Fi button on the printer. Hold until the green indicator with the Wi-Fi logo starts blinking red (about 5 seconds).
Return to the router / modem settings window, click the “Configure adapter” button. A search progress window appears. As soon as we see the WPS process. Successful. everything is ready. You can continue to configure the printer via a Wi-Fi router. Establish network connections / install drivers.
While searching for Wi-Fi infrastructure with a printer, in our case, the Epson XP-205 MFP, I completely forgot about its other functions. To exit the search mode, you can use the shutdown button, as well as the stop button (pressed for more than 5 seconds).
It is possible to find out the network address of the printer through the router / modem interface, on the “clients” tab, or once again print out the network information by pressing the corresponding button on the printer.
If the installation is happening for the first time and you immediately need to connect the printer to the wireless network, follow the above steps.
Next, install a branded driver disc. Use Explorer to open the folder with the driver and start the installation. Consider the capacity of the system. This type of installation is the most correct and allows you to exclude the installation of additional “necessary” programs, browsers, subscriptions for updates and other software that are additionally imposed by the manufacturer by the manufacturer, and other software that allows the hidden collection of information about the “printer operation”
After an unsuccessful automatic search, select “Settings”, “Search for a printer connected to the network”.
Immediately after installing the driver, when you try to print something, a message will appear indicating that it is possible to update the Printer Software, as well as the Firmware. Discard if you are using non-original or genuine consumables. There are frequent cases when, after flashing, the cartridges installed in the printer are not recognized.
You’d better save the entire page. Or add to favorites by pressing Ctrl-D, as:
When a power surges or turns off, both devices, both the printer and the router, completely forget about their connections. And you will have to “make friends” them again. Also, the printer can be configured to automatically turn off after a specified period of time, after which you also have to rebuild WPS.
Tip: Get an Uninterruptible Power Supply. 🙂
Connecting to a WI-FI point
To begin with, let’s consider the option of how you can connect a wireless WI-FI-Printer without a router using the direct network connection setting (peer-to-peer wireless network). For this setup, you will need to complete the following points (I recommend the first two only as a last resort if your laptop does not see the printer’s wireless network, for advanced users):
- First, we reset the settings to factory settings (See user manual);
- After that, we perform the basic configuration, according to your user manual;
- We are convinced that the wireless network is working (the color WI-FI indicator on the panel should flash / light up);
- Next, from the PC, we search for the wireless Wi-Fi network of our printer, as a rule, this is the name of its model, for example “HP”;
- We establish a connection between the laptop and the printer (as a rule, a password is not required);
- Install software for (Driver, see CD-ROM from the printer).
After completing all the steps, your model will automatically appear in the list of available devices, and you can print. There are disadvantages of connecting through an access point, and they are obvious:
- The connection is not secure;
- Lack of multi-network connectivity from a laptop;
- Each time, manual connection.
Connection and configuration
Consider the main types of WI-FI-Printer connection to PC via Wi-Fi network.
We connect the Printer to the Laptop via Wi-Fi
Let’s figure out how to connect a Printer to a Laptop via WI-FI without a Router. We have previously covered a similar topic of connecting an MFP printer to a laptop via a router, but now we will figure out more locally how to install a WI-FI printer to a laptop without a router. Consider possible problems, why a laptop may not see your printer when connecting via Wi-Fi and similar errors. First, let’s consider various options for connecting a wireless printer to a laptop without using a router.
To begin with, we need to connect the device directly to a laptop using a USB-Cable, or a situation is possible when it is already connected to a stationary PC, and we need to additionally connect a laptop via WI-FI for joint printing. We configure and install the printer via a USB cable, make sure that printing works.
Next, go to “Control Panel. Devices and Printers” or “Start. Devices and Printers”.
Please note: View: Large Icons. You can have “Categories”.
Next, select yours from the list, press RMB, select “Printer Properties”.
Go to the “Access” tab, mark the “Shared access to this printer” checkbox, specify the network name, click “OK”.
Then you can disconnect the USB cable, go to the “Devices and Printers” folder again, click “Add Printer”.
In the window that appears, you should see and select our printing device.
Click “Next”, then we do a print test.
As we can see, the router is not required at all and the distribution of printing via Wi-Fi is completed.
Unfortunately, I did not find useful videos on how to set up printing without using a router directly from a laptop, so I suggest that you familiarize yourself with alternative ways of printing from different devices, including Android gadgets, using a virtual printer, all you need is to download a special attachment.
