“Other” on the iPhone. as it was?
In iOS 8 and earlier, the Other category included:
- Email with attachments
- Messages with attachments
- Calendar events
- Diagnostic information
- IOS Settings and Updates
- Safari bookmarks and history
- Installed programs data
- Voice recordings.
4 Ways to Clear “Other” on iPhone in iTunes and What It Is?
When iPhone memory is worth its weight in gold, every megabyte counts.
Connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer, launch iTunes, and go to the Overview menu of your device. At the bottom of the program screen, you will see a memory status indicator, in which the contents of your device are sorted into categories: “Audio”, “Video”, “Photo”, “Programs”, “Books”, “Documents and Data”, and “Other “.
For example, I have no questions about what iTunes means by “Audio”, “Video” or “Photo”, and what is included in “Other” is a mystery.
Types of storage contents for iPhone and iPad
According to Apple, the following types of data are stored on iOS devices:
- Audio: songs, audio podcasts, audiobooks, voice recordings and ringtones.
- movies, video clips and TV shows.
As a rule, on a new iPhone or iPad, “Other” takes up no more than 200 MB and there is nothing to worry about. But over time, the size of this partition can reach several gigabytes (!). At the time of this writing, on my 16GB iPhone 5s, “Other” was using 2.69GB of storage, which is 23% of all available storage (11.9GB). I was thinking, and you?
What are cached files in iOS?
In other words, cached files are temporary files that are created when streaming music and videos, hello Apple Music!
Still, Apple does not agree, because in addition to temporary files, iTunes classifies the data as “Other”:
- IOS updates downloaded over Wi-Fi
- Unloaded files
- Files left over from a failed or incomplete sync
- Notification Center messages
- Application crash reports
- Copies of photos with superimposed filters
Connect iPhone to your computer, launch iTunes, select your device and go to the “Overview” page.
Now, on iPhone, go to Settings. Basic. Storage and iCloud. Section “Storage”. Manage “, select the downloaded update and uninstall it.
- Launch iTunes again or connect the device to your computer and estimate the size of the sector “Other”. It will decrease by the size of the software update.
- Temporary files are partially deleted when restarting iPhone.
- Cached files are not included in the device backup (officially), hence restoring from the backup clears the “Other” on the iPhone. It is noticed that there are fewer temporary files in the iCloud copy than in the iTunes copy, but they are still there.
- Some specialized utilities for Mac and Windows, PhoneClean, for example, allow you to delete temporary and unloaded files, as well as files left after unsuccessful or interrupted synchronization.
- Mobile operating system settings
- Siri and VoiceOver voices
- System data
- Cached files

After removing the 1.4GB iOS 9.3 update, on my iPhone 5s the Other section has shrunk from 2.69GB to 1.29GB.
Apple wouldn’t be itself if iOS or iTunes had a feature to clear the Other section of the iPhone, but unfortunately for users, this is not possible. Cupertinos declare that this is not necessary, since:
If you don’t trust artificial intelligence, you can force iOS to partially delete cached files, after which the size of the “Other” section in iTunes will decrease.
In practice, it turns out that these measures solve the problem with the gigabyte section “Other” only temporarily. IOS will always generate cached files and error reports, and there’s nothing you can do about it. But there is still a way that allows you to radically clear “Other” on iPhone, and that is Erase Content and Settings.
“Other” on iPhone. as is?
With the advent of iOS 9, the situation has changed and now iTunes refers to the “Other” category:
As you can see, Apple has put things in order in the iOS storage and now it has become more transparent. The question about cached files remained open, since in addition to video and music cache, other data are stored in the iPhone and iPad memory, for example, iOS updates downloaded over Wi-Fi. Therefore, iTunes must identify them somehow.
How to Clear “Other” on iPhone by Erasing Content and Settings?
Go to Settings. Basic. Reset “and click on the button” Erase content and settings “.
Confirm irreversible data erasure twice.
When configuring the device, do not restore it from a backup, as temporary files are partially saved in it, but configure as new.
After the first download, connect iCloud. The content of your cloud storage will be automatically loaded into the device memory and will be synchronized with all iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch connected to your Apple ID.
The steps described above are only temporary measures that still need to be repeated periodically, for example, after each iOS update. And don’t be confused by the “Other” section in iTunes, as iOS manages it automatically and deletes temporary files itself when needed. Plus, you can always clean your iPhone manually with PhoneClean. it’s like cleaning the house, only express.
Viruses on iPhone: Is it possible to infect an Apple smartphone?
When it comes to the security of computers and mobile devices, anyone who knows a little about the topic will tell you: Android is very easy to infect with a virus, but the iPhone in this regard is reliability itself. But is it? Let’s figure it out!
Jailbreak is a risk
So, the average iPhone user will never see malware on their smartphone. But we haven’t talked about such a thing as jailbreak yet.
If you are not in the know: jailbreak (popularly just “jail”) gives access to iOS administrator rights and allows you to bypass all Apple security restrictions. As a result, the user is able to install applications from any source and change the system at will. in general, everything is like on Android.
Jailbreak gives you more opportunities to customize the system “for yourself”. but also dramatically reduces the level of security, because you can already install infected applications on a jailbroken iPhone or become a victim of a cyber attack.
Today “jail” has seriously lost its popularity. Apple has made iOS a much more convenient and fully functional system than before, so even the once loyal supporters of jailbreak decided that it was better to return to the “bright” path.
First. about the terms
Before we start, let’s, as scientists say, “agree on terms.” Most people call any malware a “virus”. but it’s actually (technically) not quite there.
Malware (aka “soapware”) is the most widespread variant of a malicious program. The virus enters the computer through the installed program, and then spreads throughout the device through replication (self-replication). Often he goes to other gadgets too. It was “viruses” that were popular in the past decades; today they are not the most widespread type of malware.
Adware is software that brings tons of ads to your computer (desktop or mobile). It became popular due to malicious sites and browser extensions.
Spyware. steals data about you and sends it to dishonest advertising companies.
Ransomware. locks your PC and demands a ransom for regaining access to your files and control over the system as a whole.
Looks like a virus, but not a virus
The iPhone has problems that can be attributed to viruses. But the real reason is, of course, very different.
For example, if your smartphone is running slowly, you should free up more space on it or replace the battery if the gadget has been working for a very long time, and the battery is already “tired”. in such cases, Apple deliberately lowers the processor frequency in order to prevent the device from turning off spontaneously when peak loads (the old battery can no longer cope with them). You can check the level of battery wear in the iOS settings. If he is already “walking around”. it’s time to see a doctor (well, that is, to the service).
Regular iOS updates
One of the best ways not to fall into the clutches of the “soapmaker” is to update the operating system in a timely manner. This is another of the key and “eternal” advantages of iOS over Android. It is especially important that with each new software release, all compatible devices receive immediately. Look at the statistics of iOS versions on which the actively used “apple” technology works. you will immediately notice that most users have already updated to the most current version of iOS.
As of November 1, 2019 (less than two months after release), more than 50% of devices have iOS 14 installed.
In Android, things work very differently. Owners of top-end devices sometimes wait for “update” for months, and owners of “regular” gadgets do not receive it at all. As a result, they risk “catching” a virus that has long been neutralized on Apple devices.
As of November 1, 2020, Android 10 (1 year and 2 months after release) is installed on 33.3% of devices.
IOS has a special practice called sandboxing. It allows you to make sure that the application (“sand”) will never go beyond the prescribed limits (“sandbox fence”). What does it mean? For example, none of the newly installed applications will be able to access data from other programs.
In addition, almost all programs in iOS run in an account with “curtailed” privileges. They do not have access to administrator (root) rights, so that third-party applications cannot change system settings and cause harm.
The result is the following. even if you unintentionally install a “suspicious” application, the second level of iOS protection will not give it access to the OS and files.
Antivirus on iPhone: does iOS really need it?
There are quite a few “antiviruses” in the App Store. Why are they needed if the risk of catching malware tends to zero?
If you take a closer look at these applications, you will notice that these programs do not do anything useful. Programs like Lookout, Avira, and Norton do not scan your iPhone for viruses (due to the sandboxing discussed above). What do they do then?
There is only one problem with all of this. you already have access to all of these features! IOS has a Find iPhone feature. The Safari browser. and any other iOS browser. always warns you when you want to visit an unsafe website. And, of course, your gadget will always inform you that while updating the firmware.
Other functions of such applications. for example, VPN and monitoring of your financial accounts. are best left to specialized applications.
The conclusion is simple. we have absolutely useless applications, the value of which is zero.
By the way, starting in 2017, Apple has been removing from the App Store a large number of fake antiviruses and other “useful” applications that claimed to include scanning for viruses as their functions. Cupertinos also updated the guidelines (instructions) for developers with a reminder that applications cannot include content or services that are not actually offered.
Where did the free space go?
So! Synchronization! You know the meaning of the term “sync to iCloud”? In short, this means that the information you have selected will also be stored in Apple’s “cloud” storage.
In the future, this information can be synchronized with other devices that you use. Now look at the screenshot of iCloud settings below, and tell me which of the list will take up the most space.?
Correctly! Of course, the photos that you take on your iPhone, as well as backups that also automatically go to the cloud.
And now everyone who has activated the synchronization of the photo stream in iCloud honestly answer the question below, indicating your answer in the comments to the article.
How to get to photos that are synced to the iCloud cloud?
Look at the statistics and think again. do you really need it so that all the photos are copied somewhere else? Personally, I have this feature disabled. I regularly manually copy photos that are important to me to my computer (link to instructions below).
Move on. Did you know that in the iOS settings there is an option to set up an iCloud backup? What does this mean and how does it work? Every time your iPhone is connected to a charger and is in Wi-Fi range, it automatically backs up to the cloud. This is done regularly, and you usually don’t even know about it.
Management of backup in iCloud of any of your devices is carried out as follows: go to Settings. [Your Name], then scroll down the page and select the desired device. On the Device Information page, there is a radio button for “iCloud Backup”.
What information is stored in the backup? I wrote about this in a separate article (here’s a link). But most importantly, the backup can also include all the same photos.
It turns out that with an incorrectly configured iPhone, the entire photo stream is copied to iCloud twice. First time in its original form, second time as part of a backup.
This is the most common reason for an overflowing iCloud storage. If you really need photos to be available in the cloud, set it up in one place. either a photo stream or in a backup (I would choose the former).
How to increase iCloud storage
If you are one of those photographers who take their pictures exclusively on the iPhone 7 Plus and also store all these photos in iCloud, you definitely need to increase the amount of cloud storage. It is very simple to do this, and this pleasure is quite inexpensive. start at 0.99 for 50GB.
You can expand your storage here: Settings. [Your Name]. iCloud. Manage Storage. Change storage plan.
Some documents took up all the free space on iCloud
[UPDATE: This section was relevant for iOS 10 and below. In iOS 11, “Documents and Data” includes BACKUP COPIES]
From complaints in the comments from many users, I realized that the problem of overflowing iCloud storage lies not only in photos and backups.
There is another source of endless kilobytes that just strive to fill your cloud storage. This source is called “Documents”, but this nifiga doesn’t suggest which way to dig in order to clear iCloud.
Digging through iCloud Settings, I found one interesting page. Below I have provided a short plan of action:
STEP 1. Go to Settings. Apple ID. iCloud. iCloud (yes, this is not a typo, but you need to click on the storage strip).
STEP 2. Click “Manage” and go to the page for managing your repository.
STEP 3. See the “Documents and Data” section? This is where the data that applications have ever “stored” in iCloud. Let’s clean up a little here.
The documents that take up the most space are at the very top of the list. I hope that you yourself will determine what has eaten up all your iCloud storage space.
STEP 4. Click on “gluttony”, and in the window that opens, click on the Change button (upper right corner). You can delete one item at a time, or scroll down and Delete all.
To prevent applications from dumping their “junk” in the cloud storage. disable iCloud Drive.
How to free up space on iCloud
As we just found out, the main problem with overflowing iCloud storage is photos being stored and possibly twice. To see what takes up the most space in YOUR iCloud storage, go to Settings. [Your Name]. iCloud. Manage Storage.
And in this place everything should become clear to you. Usually the first two sections (iCloud Media Library and BACKUP) “eat up” the entire space. Our task is to remove duplicate photos and thus free up space in iCloud.
It is not so easy to cope with Mediatek, tk. you need to manually clean up photos from your devices and wait for the changes to be applied to the photos synced to the cloud. Therefore, I suggest excluding photos from the backups you create. To do this, we do this:
STEP 1. Click on the Backups item, then on the name of your device.
STEP 2. In the SELECTING DATA FOR CREATING A COPY section, turn off the “Media Library” item (as well as the data of all those programs that, in your opinion, are not required for backup).
STEP 3. Scroll down the page and click on “Delete Copy”.
Yes, we need to delete the backup that took up all available iCloud storage space. Don’t worry, we will manually create a new copy that will no longer include the photostream. To do this, we do this:
STEP 1. Go to Settings. [Your Name]. iCloud. iCloud Backup
STEP 2. Click “Create a backup” wait until the creation process is completed.
As you already understood, we deleted the old backup and then created a new one. The new backup does not contain a photo stream, which means it takes up significantly less space in the cloud.
It may also happen that your Media Library has grown to an indecent size (more than 5GB). In this case, you need to either increase your iCloud storage or transfer photos from iPhone to computer and then delete them from iPhone.
Disable iCloud Drive
There is one more iCloud Drive function that is quite new for you and me, which quietly appeared in the next iOS update. So iCloud Drive allows you to store and sync through the cloud data of applications almost all that are installed on your iPhone.
Thus, it turns out that all your Viber or WhatsApp correspondence with attachments, videos and porn pictures flies straight to the virtual storage. Again, the question is. do you need it? Disable!
On your iOS device, go to Settings. Apple ID. iCloud, scroll down the page and turn off either iCloud Drive completely, or choose which applications should and which should not store your data in the cloud.
Try it. it should help. Well, if it helped, like it (click one of the multi-colored buttons).
How do I free up space on iCloud? [Instruction]
Recently I was visiting friends and I, as an “Apple lover” (who said that?), Was once again asked to help with a problematic iPhone. The phone was periodically popping up the message “Can’t create a backup for this iPhone because there is not enough free space in iCloud”, which was more annoying than causing any inconvenience.
This problem, if you can call it that, is faced by many iPhone owners. But what to do with it, and why suddenly all the space in the iCloud storage turned out to be full, not many people know. Therefore, today I will tell you how to free up space in iCloud
As you probably all know, when registering an Apple ID, Apple allocates 5GB of free space on its servers. These 5GB are intended for storing personal information (contacts, notes, etc.) and backups.
At first it may seem that 5GB is a lot, but in fact it is “fucking so little.” Statistics are such that more than half of users do not pay enough attention to setting up their iOS devices.
Therefore, quite often, many of them are faced with a situation where the iCloud storage is full and the above message starts to appear on the iPhone screen.
To give you an idea of what you are dealing with, below I will tell you why this message appears and what needs to be configured so that the storage is used optimally and does not overflow.
How to view photos in iCloud
I’m sure that at the beginning of the article, many hesitated when I asked about photos in iCloud. If you also don’t know what this is about, here’s a little life hack that can be very useful in the future.
In this article, we are talking about iCloud cloud storage. It can be controlled both from the iPhone and from the computer. If you didn’t know, there is a site on the network with a consonant address iCloud.com. this is the place where you can access information, as well as view photos that were previously synchronized from your devices.
Go to the site and log in by entering your Apple ID details. After that, you will be taken to the LaunchPad page where the Media Library, Find iPhone, Contacts and others applications are located. I will not continue further
Well, that’s all. In this little tutorial, we tweaked your iPhone a little more and freed up space in iCloud. If the article turned out to be useful, don’t be a bastard. like it (social media buttons below).
Moving data to the cloud
To optimize the usable space on the internal storage of Android and conveniently store user data (pictures, videos, audio recordings), there are convenient cloud services. Dropbox, Yandex.Disk, Cloud., Google Disk and Google Photo. The latter are part of the functionality of Android devices.
The cloud is a secure storage method that can only be accessed by the owner of the device and those with whom he shares the password. You can enter the virtual storage not only from a mobile phone, but also from any other device. For this you will need:
Once uploaded to the cloud, files can be deleted. They will be stored on the server until the user deletes them himself. It should be borne in mind that some manufacturers set limits on file parameters and retention periods, after which the data is deleted automatically.
Millions of users communicate today via messengers. However, few people know that all photos and videos are stored not on their server, but in the phone’s memory, gradually filling it up. There are two ways to free up space.
Next, you should check the root folders of the messenger, and delete outdated videos, pictures, music. This is done like this:
Having dealt with the media from instant messengers, proceed in the same way with music, videos and photos taken by the phone’s camera. You can also clear chats and other data in WhasApp through the “Storage”.
Removing temporary files and garbage
One of the features of both the Android OS and the games and programs created for it is the creation of temporary files necessary to optimize the work, since they allow you to quickly access any part of the application. Some consider this an advantage, others. a disadvantage, but unnecessary files continue to be stored in a special directory, and over time they accumulate in such quantities that they are able to occupy gigabytes.
ALL iPhones FIXED: Photo Album & Recently Deleted Album is Empty But Still Taking Up Storage Space
Fortunately, they can be easily detected and removed on your own. To do this, it is enough to use standard tools:
In the case of correct execution of the process, after its completion, a significant amount of memory must be released in the internal storage.
Clearing the application cache
For a newbie who is faced with a similar situation for the first time, the best option would be to clear the cache on an Android device. The process of removing unnecessary data is simple, it is performed using standard smartphone tools and requires the following actions:
After that, all cached data will be deleted. However, you can clear the cache not only in applications, but also in the Google Play service. This can be done within a few minutes:
The iPhone’s Storage Space Problem
Clearing the Thumbnails folder
Few people know, but for the convenience of users, the Android operating system creates small snaps of images that increase the speed of downloading files when viewing photos and videos. They are stored in a special directory “.thumbnails” in the “DCIM” folder in the gallery, and from a practical point of view they are of minimal benefit. But they still require a certain amount of space in the internal storage. As they accumulate, temporary sketches can take up a significant amount of free space, which over time affects the performance of the smartphone. For example, if you have 500 photos, the thumbnail folder will be 1 GB. It is not surprising that it is advisable to delete these files regularly: once every 2-3 weeks.
If you don’t have a PC, you can get rid of the Snaps folder directly on your smartphone. Since the “.thumbnails” directory is hidden by default, you won’t be able to find and enter it through the “Gallery” settings. To diagnose and remove sketches, you need to install “Total Comander”.
In this case, the algorithm will be as follows:
The system allows not only to quickly delete snapshots of images, but also to block their creation. To do this, the user must open the PC, find and delete the folder “.thumbnails”. After that, he will need to create a text file with the same name on his hard disk and copy it to the “DCIM” folder. The same directory will appear on the smartphone, but since the mobile device is not capable of supporting the new format, sketches will not be created.
Transferring Apps to SD Card
If the mobile gadget runs on an old version of Android, you can unload the internal storage by transferring some of the user data to a memory card. Such a measure will allow you to use the SD card separately from the smartphone, and view its contents on any other device (photo, video, audio recording).
It is important to remember that not all applications can be migrated. The preinstalled and system programs are by default “registered” in the internal storage and cannot be moved. Most of the downloaded applications perfectly tolerate the “move”.
The operation can be performed in several ways: using standard tools or using third-party tools. The simplest and most affordable option is the Android system menu. A similar feature is provided for smartphones or tablets with OS Android 2.2 and higher. To transfer, you need to do the following:
In this way, you can go through all the items from the list, determining which applications can be moved to a removable flash drive.
Using built-in cleaners
Later Android devices have built-in functionality to delete unused files that consume valuable memory. The cleaning process can be clearly seen on the example of Huawei / Honor phones.
Some files can be deleted manually without using a cleaner. But it is worth noting that many models also have more advanced cleaning.
Using cleaning programs
Clearing memory using third-party applications is an unattractive idea, since the utilities themselves take up a lot of space on the internal storage, and in an active state they are accompanied by displaying ads. But if there is a need to use this method, it is worth choosing a proven product. the Clean Master. It weighs about 18 MB, has an intuitive interface, so it is suitable even for beginners.
After starting the program, you will need to define the task by choosing one of three points:
The program provides an antivirus and energy saving system. We also recommend that you check your Android for viruses.
Another popular program is “SD Maid”. To solve problems with cleaning memory, it is enough to install the free version. After opening the application, you will need to start scanning by pressing the button of the same name. When the results are displayed on the screen, press the “Run now” button. the memory will be cleared in a couple of seconds.
Make sure you have enough memory
In some cases, the available memory space may not correspond to reality. For example, you may think that there are several more gigabytes of memory available, but in reality, only a few megabytes. To make sure that you have free memory, go to “Settings” and select the “Memory” section.
As you can see, in our case there is more than enough free memory.
Clean the contents of the device
Modern firmware usually has built-in functionality to clean up unused files that take up extra space. Example based on Huawei / Honor.
Open the Phone Companion application.
Don’t forget that you can manually delete files such as photos or videos. To do this, you can use the file manager.
Select the desired section, let it be “Video”.
If you cannot find a program for cleaning unnecessary files on your smartphone, use the Play Market. In the search, specify a key like “clear phone memory” (without quotes).
Install the application of your choice and use it.
The phone says that there is not enough space, although there is plenty of it. What to do?
This is the question we received from one of the users of our site, Alexei. He writes that when downloading an application from the Google Play Store, an error is displayed: “Failed to download the application. There is not enough space in the device’s memory. ” At the same time, there is plenty of memory space. at least several gigabytes, while the size of the downloaded application is only a few megabytes. What to do, how to be?
This is what the error looks like when downloading the application:
Let’s say right away that there is no single solution to this problem, so we will consider various options that can help to cope with the problem.
Clearing the cache in the Play Market app
Go to the “Settings” of your phone or tablet.
Find the “Google Play Store” application and tap on it.
Here is the “Clear cache” button. Press, if necessary, confirm the action for cleaning.
Just in case, do the same with the Google Play Services application.
You can click on the “Reset” button in the “Memory” section. more data will be deleted, that is, this method is even more correct, however, most likely, you will have to sign in to your Google account again, so make sure to remember the password for it.
After that, try to install the application from the Market.
Transfer apps to your memory card
If you have a memory card and it is possible to transfer applications to it from the main memory (alas, this is rare), use this opportunity so as not to delete applications.
To do this, go to the settings, then to the “Applications” section. Here, select the application you want and click on the “Transfer to memory card” button (in our case, the button says “Go to SD card”).
Please note that system apps are not portable.
