Lenovo laptop lost sound what to do

Reasons for no sound

Often the reason for the lack of sound on a laptop is precisely the user’s actions. For example, you downloaded new drivers or tried to update existing ones, but due to inexperience or for some other reason, you did something wrong, after which the sound disappeared. Actually, one should not despair, since almost everything is fixable.

Quite often, there is no sound on the computer, because the sound card is out of order. In this case, it will most likely need to be replaced. Also, the problem may be with the speakers. Check if they are properly and securely connected. Also connect headphones to the audio output. If there is sound in them, then the speakers are faulty. Now let’s look at how to restore sound on a Windows 7 laptop, depending on the problem that occurred.

Restoring sound on a laptop

There are various reasons for the lack of sound on a laptop. Sometimes they are quite simple, and in other cases it takes a long time to look for a malfunction. In any case, before proceeding with the troubleshooting, you need to understand what exactly needs to be fixed.

What to do if the sound is missing

So let’s go to the Start menu and select Control Panel. Right-click on Computer, and in the list that appears, click Properties. Device Manager.

If a yellow circle with an exclamation mark is drawn next to the Sound Devices label, then the drivers simply flew off. You can fix this by installing new ones or updating existing ones. How to quickly update sound card drivers read here. Typically, a laptop comes with a utility disc, so you just need to download them again.

In addition, a similar problem can occur if you reinstall the OS. Developers do not always attach a CD with the necessary drivers to a laptop. In this case, before restoring sound on a Windows XP laptop, you will need to visit the website of the manufacturer of the technical device. On the Internet resource, you will need the Downloads section. Here, using the search, you should find and select the necessary drivers. Next, install them on your computer. Do not forget to clarify with which operating systems the program works, otherwise your actions may not lead to anything.

After installing the drivers, restart your laptop. Now check how the sound works. If he still does not appear, then the problem is something else. Initially, you can check the performance of the drivers with the help of special testers. For example, use programs such as Multimedia Mark or Sound Check.

The problem may also lie in the wrong settings. They help you adjust volume, frequencies, balance, etc. You can change these settings using the mixer. This utility on laptops, most often, has five sliders, moving which make the necessary changes. Check if they are all installed correctly. You will learn how to properly configure the sound on your computer from this article.

If the sound disappeared after you installed utilities or any programs, then you will need to follow these steps. Click Start-All Programs. Hello.

I never thought there could be so many problems with sound! It is undeniable, but this is a fact. a fairly large number of laptop users are faced with the fact that at one point, the sound on their device disappears

This can happen for various reasons and, more often than not, the problem can be fixed on your own by digging into the settings of Windows and drivers (thanks to which, you can save on computer services). In this article, I have collected some of the most common reasons why sound disappears on laptops (which even a novice PC user can check and eliminate!). So…

Reason: Adjusting the volume in Windows

I, of course, understand that many can express dissatisfaction. “that this is really really” for such an article. But still, many users do not know that sound in Windows is controlled not only by the slider located next to the clock (see Fig. 1).

If you click on the sound icon (located next to the clock, see Fig. 1) with the right mouse button, then several additional options will appear (see Fig. 2).

I recommend opening the following one by one:

  • volume mixer: it allows you to set your own volume in each application (for example, if you do not need sound in the browser, then it can be turned off there);
  • playback devices: in this tab you can choose through which speakers or speakers to play sound (and indeed, this tab shows all audio devices connected to the device. over, sometimes even those that you do not have! sound).
lenovo, laptop, lost, sound

In the volume mixer, notice if the sound is minimized in your running application. It is recommended to raise all sliders up, at least while troubleshooting and troubleshooting sound problems (see Figure 3).

In the “Playback Devices” tab, note that you can have several devices (I have only one device in Fig. 4). and if the sound is “fed” to the wrong device. this may be the reason for the loss of sound. I recommend that you check all devices displayed in this tab!

By the way, sometimes a wizard built into Windows helps to understand and find the causes of sound problems. To start it, just right-click on the sound icon in Windows (next to the clock) and launch the corresponding wizard (as in Fig. 5).

Reason: drivers and their configuration

One of the most common causes of problems with sound (and not only with it) is conflicting drivers (or lack thereof). To check for them, I recommend opening the Device Manager: to do this, enter the Windows Control Panel. then switch the display to large icons and run this manager (see fig. 6).

Next, open the “Sound, game and video devices” tab. Pay attention to all lines: there should not be any yellow exclamation marks and red crosses (which mean that there are problems with the drivers).

By the way, I also recommend opening the “Unknown devices” tab (if there is one). It is possible that you simply do not have the necessary drivers in the system.

By the way, I also recommend checking the drivers in the Driver Booster utility (there are both free and paid versions, they differ in speed). The utility quickly and easily helps to check and find the required drivers (an example is shown in the screenshot below). What is convenient is that you do not need to independently search for various software sites, the utility itself will compare the dates and find the driver you need, you just have to press a button and agree to install it.

An article about programs for updating drivers: https://pcpro100.info/obnovleniya-drayverov/ (including Driver Booster)

Cause: Sound manager is not configured

In addition to the sound settings in Windows itself, there is (almost always) a sound manager in the system, which is installed along with the drivers (in most cases, this is Realtek High Definition Audio). And quite often, it is in it that not optimal settings can be set, which make the sound inaudible

It’s very simple: go to the Windows Control Panel. and then go to the Hardware and Sound tab. Further on this tab, you should see the dispatcher that is installed on your hardware. For example, the laptop I’m currently setting up has the Dell Audio app installed. This software must be opened (see fig. 10).

Next, pay attention to the basic sound settings: first of all, check the volume and checkboxes, which can completely mute the sound (see Fig. 11).

Another important point: you need to check if the laptop correctly detects the device connected to it. For example, you plugged in headphones, but the laptop did not recognize them and does not work correctly with them. Result: there is no sound in the headphones!

To avoid this. when connecting the same headphones (for example), the laptop usually asks if it has correctly identified them. Your task: point him to the correct sound device (which you connected). Actually, this is what happens in Fig. 12.

Reason: the sound card is disabled in the BIOS

In some laptops, you can disable the sound card in the BIOS settings. Thus, you are unlikely to hear the sound from your mobile “friend”. Sometimes BIOS settings can be “accidentally” changed by inept actions (for example, when installing Windows, inexperienced users often change not only what is needed).

First go into the BIOS (as a rule, you need to press the Del or F2 button immediately after turning on the laptop). You can learn more about which buttons to press in this article: https://pcpro100.info/kak-voyti-v-BIOS-klavishi-vhoda/

Since the settings in the BIOS differ depending on the manufacturer, it is rather difficult to give universal instructions. I recommend going to all the tabs and checking all the items that contain the word “Audio”. For example, Asus laptops have an Advanced tab. in which you need to switch the High Definition Audio line to Enabled mode (see. Fig. 13).

Next, save the settings (most often the F10 button) and exit the BIOS (the Esc button). After restarting the laptop. the sound should appear if the reason was the settings in the BIOS

Reason: lack of some audio and video codecs

Quite often, the problem is observed when trying to play a movie or audio recording. If there is no sound when opening video files or music (but there is sound in other applications). the problem is 99.9% related to codecs!

  • first remove all old codecs from the system completely;
  • then restart the laptop;
  • reinstall one of the sets offered below (you will find it by the link) in full extended mode (thus, you will have all the most necessary codecs in your system).

For those who do not want to install new codecs into the system, there is another option, download and install a video player, which already contains everything you need to play files of various types. Such players are becoming quite popular, especially recently (and no wonder who wants to suffer with codecs ?!). You will find a link to an article about such a player below

Reason: problem with sound card

The last thing I wanted to dwell on in this article is the problems of the sound card (it can fail during sudden surges in electricity (for example, during lightning or welding)).

Frequently encountered queries in search engines, according to statistics, are issues related to the lack of sound, as can be seen in the screenshot from Google below.

Reboot your laptop.

If the sound disappears for the first time, restart your laptop. It will probably appear already when Windows starts loading.

Acer Aspire E1-571G. inexpensive 15-inch laptop

ASUS X200CA: 11-inch touchscreen. The renaissance of netbooks?

Is the sound muted in Windows?

Pay attention to the icon in the system tray (lower right corner of the screen). If there is a red crossed out circle next to the image of the white speaker, you need to increase the volume by moving the slider up.

Check system settings

Open Start. Control Panel. Sound and check all parameters. Here, in the Control Panel, you can open the menu of your IDT or Realtek audio codec, and see if their settings are normal.

Why is there no sound on the laptop?

This problem can occur on any laptop with any operating system, therefore, below we give a list of actions that must be performed sequentially for all. Perhaps, after one of them, the sound that is missing in the laptop will appear. The problem can be caused by two factors: software or hardware. Let’s start simple and move on to more complex.

Update your drivers

Open Start. Control Panel. Device Manager. In the list of devices, find the Sound, video and game controllers tab. Right-click on your codec (IDT or Realtek HD) and in the context menu that opens, try to disable-enable the device, or update the drivers. You can also open the laptop manufacturer’s website in the browser, find your model on it and download sound drivers for it.

The above steps will fix the problem 99% of the time. The chances of a malfunction of the speakers themselves are very small, so if you are not successful, contact a more experienced friend or a service center. You should not write in the comments requests to help restore the sound on the laptop, it is useless, since it is impossible to do this remotely without seeing your laptop and the settings set in it before your eyes. The problem often lies in the little things, such as an extra checkmark, the adjustment slider dragged in the wrong direction, the driver is not installed.

First steps

Laptop sound disappears. what should I do first? The very first thing you should check as this is the volume level on the laptop itself. The decision is banal, but as practice has shown, it is quite effective. You may have accidentally removed it. I myself have sinned like this a couple of times. Right-click on the speaker icon and then “Open Volume Mixer”.

The “Speaker” or main speakers are on the far left. This is the output port and main audio on the laptop. The rest of the sliders usually refer to one or another running program: for example, you can turn off or turn down the sound in the browser or a game. In general, see that all sliders are up.

Also check that there are no crosses on top of the speakers, which means that the sound on this channel is muted. To turn it on, just click on the cross itself.

You will also need to check the other item “Playback devices”.

If you see an inscription that “sound devices are not installed”, right-click on the free area and select “Show disconnected devices”.

Next, you will see all devices that are currently just turned off. They will be gray and the arrow will point down. Click on all devices and enable them with the “Enable” button.

Go to the properties of “Speaker” or main speakers. Look for the “Use this device (on)” option in the “General” tab in the “Device Application” line.

Go to the second tab “Levels” and once again make sure that the speaker has a sound level greater than zero, and there is no cross on top of the speaker.

READ  Lenovo laptop won't boot what to do

You can also do this: if there are several devices, then right-click on each and select “Use as default.” Then the laptop will use different ports for the output signal. Play music or a movie in the background to check. As soon as the desired device is turned on, you should hear a sound. You can also try right-clicking on the same speaker and select the “Detect problems with sound” button.

If everything is in order, but there is still no sound, then check the connection of the speakers and headphones. If you have speakers, then look and turn the volume level. Check that they are plugged in and that the light is on. You also need to look at where and how the audio output from the speakers is inserted. Let me remind you that it is the headphone output that is most often used. Make sure that your output speakers or headset are plugged into the same port you want. You can inadvertently confuse and connect headphones to the microphone output.

NOTE! On some laptops, there may be two more ports: line-in (arrow towards the port) and line-out (arrow from port). You can try to connect speakers or headphones to the line-out.

If the problem is still not solved, then you need to first understand why there is no sound in the laptop. There may be several reasons: from commonplace viruses to crashes and conflicts of programs that you installed earlier. We will talk about the solution of all these problems further.

BIOS check

If there is no speaker in the tray and the device manager is empty. both in the “sound” section and in the “other devices” section, and the drivers from the official website refuse to be installed, then there is a suspicion that the sound card is simply turned off in the BIOS. To enter there, you need to restart the laptop and hold down a special button while the BIOS menu is displayed. Most often these are buttons: “Del”, “F2”, “Esc”, “F2” or “F10”.

Go to the “Advanced” section and turn on any device whose name contains the word “Audio”. “Enabled”. If there is no such section, then just search for this device for all the points: the BIOS is not that big. At the very end, you need to exit and save your changes. Look at your hotkeys. Most often this is the F10 key (Save and Exit).

Drivers

If the sound on the laptop disappears, or something is wrong with it, then after the initial steps, I would completely reinstall the drivers. Or at least checked them in the “Device Manager”. Because all the hardware, including the sound card, which is sewn inside, is controlled by drivers and without them any device on a laptop will not work. I advise at this moment to connect the laptop to the Internet, since perhaps we can update the firewood from there.

The problem can be from several sides. Drivers have been changed or beaten due to third-party or virus programs. So you need to fix it.

  • The fastest way to get into the “Device Manager” is to press the combination of the “Win” and “R” keys on the keyboard.
  • Now open the section “Sound, video and game controllers” in general, click on the speaker icon. Make sure that there are no arrows on top of the devices, which there are. If you see an arrow, then right-click on this device and then select “Activate”. After that we check the sound.

If the sound still does not work, then check that at least some sound devices are in this section at all. If they are not there, then they can be found in the “Other devices” section. Open it, find your sound card there, right-click and then select “Update Drivers”. Do the same with the sound card that is already installed in the “Sound” section. After that, select “Automatic search for updated drivers”.

As soon as you do this, the system will start looking for suitable software for your hardware on Microsoft servers. If the drivers are found, just install them. After that, we restart the laptop and check the sound.

Do not be in a hurry to rejoice if after the search you see an inscription that the drivers allegedly do not need to be updated, because there is no sound on the laptop. It’s just that there is no new firewood on Microsoft servers. That is why you need to install them manually. First, we need to look at the name of the laptop, namely the model. we look under the laptop case itself and find there a piece of paper with the information we need. Sometimes you need a serial number. so write it down somewhere as well. The easiest way is to simply take a photo of the piece of paper on your phone. We will download the drivers from the manufacturers’ official websites.

We also need information about your operating system. We need Windows version: XP, 7, 8, 8.1 or 10. And we also need bitness: 32 or 64-bit system. To do this, on Windows 7 and 8, click on the main menu “Start”, then go to the “Control Panel”. In the tenth Windows, you need to select “Options” (gear icon). Next, we find the “System” section. In 7 and 8. set the view mode as “Large icons” in the “Control Panel”.

We are interested in two lines. this is “Windows Edition” and “System Type”, where the bit depth (32 or 64) is indicated. Just remember these parameters, as they are needed to download the necessary firewood.

From ASUS Go to the official support page. link. Next, we indicate the type of product “Notebooks”, as well as the series and number that you saw on the label. After that, select your OS and look for the “AUDIO” section. Download the newest pack and install it on your computer.

We go to the support site. link. Next, select the “Laptop” section. There are two options: if you are using this laptop, you can try clicking on the “Allow HP to detect your product” button. The system will try to determine the model itself. Or you can enter the serial number, which is also found on a label under the case. After that, we select the type, bitness of the OS and look for drivers for “audio”.

Lenovo

For Lenovo laptops. follow the link. Next, scroll down and find the item “Drivers and Software”. click on it or on the button below. In the search box, enter your laptop model: only letters and numbers. If this cannot be found, then enter the serial number. Select the OS and download the “Audio” firewood.

Go to the site. You can select the device manually just below. we indicate the category, series and number. Or you can enter your serial number or SNID in the line above. After that, we indicate the type of operating system and download the firewood.

Go to the support page. Enter the serial number in the search bar, find firewood and download it.

We go to the official page. We indicate the type of product and model. Click “Search”. We are looking for a driver specifically for a sound card (AUDIO).

Audio service

  • In Services, search for Windows Audio and check that the service is enabled. If it is deactivated. right-click and then select “Run”.
  • Also go to “Properties” and specify “Startup Type” as “Automatic”.
  • Click “Apply” and restart your laptop.

No sound when playing the player

At the same time, there is sound in almost all places, but if you start at least a standard Windows player, then for some reason there is no sound there. There may also be a problem with some video extensions. The problem is almost always solved by the usual installation of codecs.

  • Follow the link.
  • As you can see there are several versions: “Basic”, “Standard”, “Full” and others.
  • For reliability, you can download the “Full” version.
  • At the next step, many are confused. Just find the line “Download” and select any link. After that, download and install the pack.

Additional sound applications

On some laptops, additional applications are installed that, in theory, can control your sound. So you also need to go there and check all the settings.

  • “Start”. “Control Panel”. now set “View” to “Categories” mode. Click “Hardware and Sound”.
  • Search here for additional applications labeled “AUDIO” and open them.
  • Further, the settings may differ for different manufacturers of sound cards, but the principle is the same. Check that the sound is not set to zero and all ports are on. Be sure to check that the laptop correctly detects the device. In general, you will need to crawl through the tabs and sections, and check all the settings.

Sound level

You can set the sound level not only on the speakers, but also on the system mixer. If you lose sound after installing Windows 10, don’t be quick to blame Billy Gates and Microsoft. Check the sound level of all devices to the end.

Each object has this tab. Don’t waste decibels in vain.

Missing sound in Windows 10: what to do and how to fix

Much more often the video card driver gets lost. And then the system writes that it has been restored. If sound disappears in Windows 10, the user is most likely to blame. Very often in programs like Skype, someone cuts out the microphone and speakers, turns off the application and forgets about it. And then they wonder why the sound stopped working. Verification is carried out in completely standard ways.

First of all, the volume is checked. The next logical step is to check the power of the speakers and the quality of the connection to the analog output connector. Finally, you should turn on the control on the speakers themselves. If all of the above does not help, look at the driver version when installed. Sometimes there is no sound in games just after the update.

Driver

A sign of the need to install the required driver will be the absence of any active system devices in the menu.

An empty list is a clear indication that the firewood disk was included with the motherboard for a reason. The required software should be installed. Typically, changes take effect without rebooting. If audio devices are not installed, check the Task Manager first. The driver is most likely missing. If after updating Windows 10, sound does not work, work in the same direction. The drivers were too old.

Step-by-step instruction

Errors are so common that they can already be classified into groups. This is what we’re going to do.

In Game

If the game world does not want to play, the answer to the question of why there is no sound lies somewhere in the settings of the application itself. There are simply no options here. This is not some emulator that has incompatibility issues. All releases are tested on a Windows 10 computer. This is part of the marketing strategy. Some games, when incorrectly finished, knock down the operating system settings. You will have to put everything manually.

The cable is not connected to the connector

Another thing happens. someone turned off the speakers so that they would not interfere. In this case, the keyword “dynamics” will be missing.

Additional verification needed! Right click on the speaker icon, and go to playback devices.

Everything becomes clear instantly: not connected!

Correct this problem by inserting “jack” into the green audio output connector on the motherboard. The screen shows only 3 ports, in modern models they will make up the bottom row of the two available.

Pink microphone input. Pay attention to this if the headset has two “jacks”. Then make sure that the speakers are connected using the method described above.

Device disabled

From time to time, sound does not work on Windows 10 for the reason that someone turned off the device altogether. This can be done in two ways:

  • Program Intervention.
  • Manually.

Everything is seen. It says in black and white that the speakers are off. To restore sound, right-click and select the desired option.

Just in case, always choose the jackdaws shown on the screen, this sometimes saves a lot of time.

Volume

Most of the population has I / O ports on the back of the system unit facing away from the user. Therefore, the first step is to click on the tray in order to see if there is such an icon as in the screenshot.

In 95% of cases, this completes the system recovery.

In this article, I will mark points that will help you solve the problem:

Sometimes the sound is audible, but very quiet. You can increase the sound to the desired level yourself, using the sound settings in the taskbar. Very often, the sound icon is located at the bottom right of the screen. You just need to move the cursor over this icon and click the mouse. Further, it remains only to correct the sound. Picture below

It happens that the sound turned off with the help of your child, who accidentally pressed a hot key on the keyboard while watching a cartoon, and you sit and think, where is the sound?

To do this, you need to press a special button on the laptop keyboard, on my laptop it looks like this.

Or manually using the slider in the lower right corner of the screen

If the sound on the laptop has completely disappeared, you can contact the laptop repair or see in the taskbar if the speakers are turned on. If there are no problems with the speakers, and there is no sound on the laptop, you can connect some external device to it, for example, headphones or speakers for testing.

If sound is input to external devices, then there is some problem with the internal standard speakers. You can contact laptop repair to check and adjust the sounds. Although, if you have some experience, you can try to solve the problem with the setup yourself.

The service responsible for sound is disabled

However, not all audio problems are related to incorrect settings. Very often, there is no sound when the Windows Audio service is disabled. You can start this service yourself or with the help of a specialist by going to laptop repair near your home.

We go to the Control Panel, then Services. Here you need to find the line Windows Audio. and if it is turned off, you need to start it. Picture below

This article will be very useful for you about Honor, especially if you have no sound on your laptop.

Cases of his disappearance are different, let’s analyze each of them:

Can’t hear anything from headphones or laptop speakers.

By all indications of the system’s operation, the audio file is played, but not heard.

Music playback stops suddenly.

Sound skips or interrupts at certain playback locations.

The laptop stops responding when trying to play a sound file.

System reboots when opening audio files.

Let’s look at an example of solving similar problems on an Asus laptop. On computers from other manufacturers, the work will be similar.

In the event that you are trying to play a CD or audio file from a flash card and you do not hear anything, try changing the playback source.

If there is no sound on the laptop when playing a file in the laptop‘s memory, try playing system melodies.

Check the speaker volume. To do this, run: Start. All Programs. Standard. Entertainment. Volume.

In the window that appears, the checkbox “Off. all ”should be removed. Set the maximum value in the columns “Volume”, “Sound”, “Synthesizer” and “Laser”, adjust the balance everywhere in the center.

If you have a cable for the speakers, you need to check the reliability and correctness of its connection to the battery (as a rule, this is an outlet).

See if the speakers are connected correctly to the laptop itself.

Make sure the speakers are connected to each other.
