Printing Problems and Symptoms
When clarifying the reasons why printing on the printer is “striped” (horizontal or vertical, black or white stripes appear), it is important to note the differences between the printing devices themselves.
As you know, there are two categories of printing devices: inkjet and laser. And the reasons why the print quality deteriorates on a particular device depends on what kind of machine you are using (Panasonic, Kyocera, Samsung, Epson, Xerox, etc.).
Reasons for streaking when printing
First of all, black / black streaks appear when printing on paper due to a problem with the cartridge. Poor print quality of the finished document may be the result of worn out cartridge components, insufficient amount of toner powder (in a laser printer) or ink (in an inkjet printer) in the cartridge, poor maintenance or refilling the cartridge.
In most cases, the solution to the problem (horizontal or vertical dark stripes) is to carry out preventive maintenance. Less often it happens that the unit needs repair.
Purchasing a multifunctional or any other printing device (Panasonic KX, Kyocera, Samsung, Epson, etc.) that reproduces printing processes at the highest level, the user should be prepared for the fact that the level of quality may decrease over time. At this stage, a question may arise as to why this can happen and why the printer can reproduce black bars when printing. The explanation is quite simple.
At the time of purchase, the device usually contains a demo cartridge with a certain volume. As you run out of ink in the cartridge, the quality of the images will gradually deteriorate during the printing processes on the printer. This may be evidenced by black streaks on the paper, indicating that the cartridge needs to be refilled. After the refueling procedure, you can continue to use the printer.
However, not every user knows that all cartridge consumables (Panasonic, Kyocera, Samsung, Epson, Xerox, etc.) have a certain resource. Therefore, after the second or third refueling, it will be necessary to carry out proper maintenance of the consumable and replace worn parts.
The mechanism of the cartridges is not that complicated. And, knowing what components it consists of, what is the purpose of each, what each is responsible for when transferring digitized data to paper and what problems they can cause, it is quite possible to replace it yourself. Having mastered the knowledge about the constituent spare parts of cartridges, you will not only be able to improve the print quality yourself, but you will also be able to significantly save.
If you have problems printing with inkjet printers
The main reasons why black streaks appear when printing documents on an inkjet printer include:
You will be able to pay 30-50% less for light, depending on what kind of electrical appliances you use.
To eliminate malfunctions that are the reasons for the appearance of black stripes on paper, you can try to apply a general aLGorithm of actions, which we will consider using the example of an Epson l800 inkjet printer.
First, check the ink level by running the Epson l800 Device Management Utility. If the program shows that the ink level is minimal, you should urgently refill the cartridge. When working with CISS, the ink level is easy to determine, since the reservoirs are transparent. However, when checking the performance of the system, it is worth making sure that it is not airy and whether the filters are dirty.
If the reason for the black lines is different, you can try cleaning the print head. In devices with inkjet printing technology, the head can be installed by the manufacturer either in the unit itself (this is implemented in most Epson models, including the l800), or in a cartridge (HP, Canon printers).
Cleaning of printer models with a print head inside (Epson l800) at home is performed by software. A blank sheet is inserted into the paper feed tray, and the printer software is launched on the computer through the “Service” / “Maintenance” section. Next, the head is cleaned, as well as the nozzles (nozzles) or the cartridge.
In cases where it is not possible to eliminate malfunctions in this way, most likely, the head or the components connecting it to the main part are out of order. In such situations, it is necessary to replace the spare part.
However, since in Epson devices (l800, R290, etc.) the print head is located in the middle of the device itself, in cases where it comes out of a standing position, you will have to contact the service center for parts replacement.
Streaks on paper when printed on a printer
Very often office workers, and home users of office equipment, are faced with problems of loss of print quality. Unfortunately, sometimes situations arise when the results of printed documents do not correspond to the declared quality and look completely different from what the user would like to work with the peripheral device. And the most common phenomenon can be considered light or dark stripes when printing on a printer (HP, Canon, Epson, etc.) or a multifunctional device (Samsung scx 4200, Panasonic kx flm663, Kyocera). What this may indicate, as well as how you can fix the problem, we will tell you today.
Currently, questions regarding the maintenance of modern office equipment and multifunctional devices that greatly facilitate working printing workflows are very relevant. In particular, “faint” printing and printing with black stripes worries users who encounter it, for the reason that most of them simply cannot determine the reason why such problems appear and, therefore, how to fix them without the need to contact a service center.
If you have problems printing with laser printers
There can be various reasons for the appearance of streaks during printing (horizontal, vertical) on laser printers. For color laser and monochrome laser products, the most common causes of printing problems are different.
If the print quality deteriorates in monochrome laser printers MFPs (Samsung scx 4200, Panasonic kx flm663, Kyocera FS 6525MFP, etc.), this may indicate the following factors:
- Low Ink. a white line running vertically approximately in the center of the sheet;
- Ingress of a foreign part, object. a vertical white stripe with clearly defined boundaries;
- Poor cleaning of the cartridge and accessories. pale light streaks, thin and vertical;
- Photo / corotron contact damaged. 4/8 horizontal black stripes.
As a rule, the most common reasons for streaking and poor-quality printing in monochrome MFPs, such as Samsung scx 4200, Panasonic kx flm663, Kyocera FS 6525MFP and others, are precisely poor cleaning of the cartridge and wear of parts. For example, in Kyocera devices, damage to the photo roll, squeegees, wear of the Teflon roll is caused by longitudinal black stripes. And if you replace the components on Kyocera machines in a timely manner, they will be able to print high quality again.
As in Kyocera units, Samsung devices (scx 4200) produce a “striped” print when the photo roll, transfer rollers, metering blades are worn out. In such cases, Samsung printers (scx and other models) should be refurbished with worn parts replaced.
In addition, a chip is installed on the Samsung SCX line printers, and refilling of such cartridges without reflashing negatively affects the print quality. Therefore, this version should also be checked if the Samsung scx device began to print improperly.
When using different Panasonic series devices (for example, KX MB-283), “striped printing” problems rarely occur. In most cases, streaks on the paper after printing indicate poor cleaning of the cartridge components. So, for example, dirt on the laser glass, corotron, as well as residues of the previous toner in the hopper may be the result of streaks when printing on Panasonic kx and other laser devices.
In Panasonic KX devices, the camera is very sensitive to light. Therefore, when refilling and cleaning the Panasonic KX cartridge, do not expose it to bright light. In addition, improper processing of drum and other spare parts in Panasonic KX devices and other printers can result in poor picture quality.
Stripe printing in laser printers: reasons
In such modifications, the reasons for such problems are much more:
- the toner has run out;
- loose connection of cartridge components;
- damage or failure of the drum unit;
- getting into the magnetic shaft of foreign objects or its physical defects (this leads to the fact that wide black stripes appear on the edge);
- Waste toner container is full.
- the blade for dispensing powder is not securely fixed;
- poor contact between the drum unit and the shaft.
There may be many more reasons, but the above are the main ones, and, as a rule, with step-by-step prevention, the secondary factors will also disappear.
In the same place
The second scenario is extremely rare. After all, we are talking about permanent printing in stripes, but only within the same area. This problem usually appears on laser printers.
What is the reason for this? If you are wondering why a laser printer prints in stripes in the same place, then it’s time to think about how much this equipment serves you faithfully. After all, such phenomena are often observed on those models that have worked for a long time. This is due to the deformation of the shaft. Or any external damage (dust, sand, small objects, etc.).
In addition, if you are wondering why the printer prints in stripes in the same place, it is worth looking at the condition of the thermal film. It is usually found under the cartridge. And this detail is very vulnerable. The slightest hit of a foreign object. and you can assume that you will have to deal with the global repair of the printer. Only in practice, damage to the thermal film is extremely rare. It is now customary to change any computer equipment before it is considered obsolete. And this often helps to avoid situations in which printing problems arise.
Running out of paint
Why does a color printer print in stripes? Yes, and black and white too (provided that the equipment is fully operational)? Maybe the whole point lies in the fact that you just run out of ink in the cartridge. This is a very common phenomenon that sooner or later every user encounters.
Usually, in this case, users begin to puzzle over why the printer prints with white stripes. If you saw this phenomenon on your documents, then it is high time to check the presence of a sufficient amount of paint in the equipment. As a rule, the printer itself often warns the user about a shortage of printing media, and also asks to replace the cartridge or refill it.
In truth, this is the simplest problem that can be encountered when there are streaks on the printed document. But there is one more not very serious moment related to our today’s topic. And now we will get to know him.
What to do if an inkjet printer prints with stripes
Any office equipment, in particular, an MFP and a printer, sooner or later begins to “junk”. One of the common problems that over time begins to bother many users is the following: an inkjet printer prints with stripes. Most often, the reason for such a printing defect is the contamination of the device mechanism with dye particles and the trivial wear and tear of its component parts.
Change of position
There are also situations where the stripes change their position with each print. This often puts the user in an awkward position. After all, not everyone will be able to determine why the printer prints in stripes in this situation. But there is one way out that is worth paying attention to.
This is the toner cartridge. The point is that it is its poor quality that causes the appearance of stripes on the printed document, which “move”. What exactly is the matter here? Toner just wakes up. But in order to finally “make a diagnosis”, it is necessary to conduct a small check.
To do it yourself, lay some unnecessary newspapers on the floor, remove the cartridge, and then put on gloves and an apron (or any clothes you don’t mind throwing away). Now shake the part well. If its contents “woke up” on you, then we can safely say that the problem of deviations during printing is caused precisely by damage to the toner. But don’t panic. It is easy to fix the situation here. But more on that later. After all, first it is better to find out all the reasons why the printer prints black stripes (or white).
There is also a fairly common problem in which another small piece of equipment is involved. These are the printer nozzles. The thing is that they are often clogged with some kind of garbage. And after that, you have stripes on the printed document. They can be in the same place or move as you print.
In truth, if you are wondering why the printer prints in stripes, but all the previous options do not suit you, then it’s time to take your equipment to a computer diagnostics technical center. There, express your suspicions about clogged nozzles. Experts will help you figure out exactly if your assumptions are correct.
Only if you “blow off dust particles” from your equipment, then this option is unlikely to suit you. After all, there are also a number of rather interesting problems that the user may only encounter. Why does an inkjet printer print in stripes (and not just an inkjet printer)? Now we will try to figure out what else could be the reasons for this kind of behavior. This is not so difficult as it might seem at first glance.
The following problem is quite common with inkjet printers. So, if your equipment suddenly began to print in stripes (it doesn’t matter if they move or stay in the same place all the time), then you should pay attention to such a detail as a train. After all, its damage leads to the most terrible consequences.
In truth, the diagnostics of damage to the loops is carried out in specialized centers. You can do this on your own only if the breakdown is visible with the naked eye. Here you will have to try pretty hard to rectify the situation. It is common practice to buy completely new printing equipment. After all, replacing the loop sometimes turns out to be not such an effective way to deal with the problem.
Diagnose and troubleshoot inkjet printers
If a similar problem occurs, it is recommended not to rush to extremes, but to adhere to the following aLGorithm of actions:
- Check ink levels.
To do this, go to the control panel of the printing device, where such functionality should be present (for each model, the location of such an item will be individual). If you are using an old cartridge and refilling it manually, try filling it with an insignificant amount of ink to see if the printer will print after that and if this color will not drop out. In the case of using CISS for refueling, review the presence of ink in the flask, and also look at all the tubes connecting the cartridge and the container with paint (if they are not filled, then the reason may be incorrect connection, pinched or physically damaged tubes).
- Check cartridges for physical damage.
This is not difficult at all: cover several sheets of paper or newspaper, and then shake the cartridge over them one by one. If some spots appear, then the cartridge must be replaced and nothing else can be fixed.
- Cleaning the encoder tape.
Take any lint-free cloth, dampen it in the cleaning liquid and gently wipe this accessory part, which is a transparent tape placed along the carriage.
- Maintaining the print head.
Sooner or later, the head will become clogged, in some cases air can enter the nozzles. There is a special tab for cleaning it, located on the printer control panel. For this:
- open the printer control window and go to the “Service” tab (in some cases called “Maintenance”);
- click on the printhead cleaning icon;
- wait until the end of the procedure and print a test page;
- if the result is much better, but still not perfect, repeat the procedure.
If the problem persists or the printer does not provide such a function, the problem can be solved with a special fluid. Fill a container with it and place the crown for about 4-5 hours (ideally, leave it in this position for 12 hours). Then all that remains is to insert it into place and try to print a test page.
If the problem persists, then the whole point is in the failure of any of the nodes. In this case, you cannot do without diagnosing the device at the service center.
Popular solution methods
For example, if you suspect a very serious breakdown, you can take your equipment to a specialized service center. There, for a fee, they will help you find the cause of the stripes printing, and also fix it.
Replacing the cartridge is also a good way. Helps in cases where you suspect toner is leaking. Or if you are running low on ink in your printer. Sometimes only a complete replacement can help.
You can try to clean the printer from dust, dirt and other “rubbish”. Only this must be done carefully. True, it is not recommended to engage in such activities on your own. you can simply “ruin” the equipment.
The last option you can offer is to buy a new printer. This is the most effective, although not always the cheapest, method of correcting the situation. Just make sure first that the problem in your hardware is really critical.
“Striped” inkjet print defects
There are not so many reasons for the appearance of “banding” on the sheet that came out of the printer.
A manufacturing defect cannot be ruled out, especially if your newly purchased device begins to draw stripes.
But, if before the appearance of this defect, your unit was printing with high quality, then in most cases, the problem is fixable at home, and you can do without going to the service center.
The fact that the tightness of the cartridge is broken is indicated by vertical stripes located chaotically, and each time in a new place.
You want to remove the cartridge from the machine and check to see if toner spills out. If this is the case, then you should check this element for mechanical damage, whether the sealing gum is well inserted, preventing the toner from spilling out. If cracks and other irreparable damage are found, the cartridge needs to be replaced.
Damage to the drum unit
The imaging drum is an aluminum shaft that has a special coating that is sensitive to optical radiation. Only the outer layer is sensitive to laser radiation, which becomes thinner over time and in some places is erased.
Even if wear is not visually detected, the thinning of the active layer still affects the print quality. In this case, black streaks appear at the edges of the sheet. As the active layer on the drum is worn out, the stripes will expand.
It should be noted that toner consumption in these areas will be higher because the toner layer on the drum will be thick. As a result, other parts of the cartridge or the printer itself, for example, the fuser unit, may fail.
Although there is a method for restoring the active layer on the drum, it is not effective enough. The best way out of this situation is to replace the part with a new one.
Encoder tape and disc problems
Also, the reason that a white line appears during printing, which repeats at the same distance, may be the presence of clogs on the encoder disk. It is usually located on the left side of the machine on the paper feed shaft. The disc is made of transparent plastic and has special markings.
When there is dust, paint or other dirt on the disc markings, the optocoupler sensors are not able to read the information correctly, and the paper positioning is incorrect. You can also use the Mr. Muscle tool to clean the disc. It is important that this product is intended for glass cleaning and contains ammonia.
The carriage into which the cartridges are inserted is positioned along the encoder tape. It is a transparent plastic strip with strokes applied to it. It is located near the back wall (inside the device).
If dirt gets on the tape, then the correct positioning of the carriage is lost, and the text or image is shifted to the side during printing, at regular intervals. Wipe this tape with the same product as the encoder disc. Just be careful during this procedure. If the tape comes off the mounts, you will have to disassemble half of the device to install it in place.
Important! Acetone and other solvents must not be used to clean the encoder disc or tape, as this can erase the markings.
Why do streaks appear on the printer when printing?
Any printer, be it laser or inkjet, in the process of operation comes to a stage of its work when the print quality deteriorates. Printed pages become dull, horizontal or vertical stripes appear on the sheet, the image is printed with gaps (no fill in some places), etc. All these troubles can appear for various reasons, which depend on the printing technology used in the devices. For a laser printer, these are problems with a cartridge or drum, and for an inkjet, if it prints with stripes. malfunctions in the print head, interruptions in ink.
Cleaning the print head
It is very important for inkjet printers that there is no downtime. Otherwise, due to a long pause, the ink in the print head dries up and clogs up the nozzles. the holes through which ink is sprayed onto the paper.
In some models of printing equipment, the print head can dry out after a couple of days of equipment downtime.
But for most machines, it takes 1 to 3 weeks for the ink to dry in the nozzles. In any case, you need to regularly turn on the device so that it can “blow through” the nozzles with ink.
In modern printers and MFPs, the manufacturer has provided the ability to clean the print head by means of the device itself, using a proprietary utility. For example, for the HP machine, this feature is called “Clean Cartridges”.
For Epson printers, this function is called “Cleaning the Print Head”. Also, this software allows you to make a preliminary check, which allows you to determine from the printed impression if the nozzles are really clogged. This function is useful in order to save ink, since when cleaning the print head, an increased consumption of ink occurs: it is with ink that the nozzles are rinsed.
For Canon devices, in order to clean the head, in the utility window, you need to click on the item “Cleaning”, or “Deep cleaning”. its more advanced type, with a large consumption of ink.
If the inkjet printer prints in stripes, it is recommended to repeat this procedure 2-3 times in a row, and let the device “settle” for a couple of hours, after which it can be used for its intended purpose.
If hardware cleaning does not help, then you will have to resort to manual flushing of the print head, as shown in this video.
If the jet head is built into the cartridge, it is recommended to soak the nozzles in the Mr. Muscle glass cleaner for at least a day. It is desirable that the liquid is green or blue. Soak the nozzles so that the detergent does not come into contact with the electrical contacts. After soaking, gently blot the nozzles with a tissue, insert the cartridge into the printer, and start the standard cleaning procedure described above.
It is not recommended to soak and rinse the inkjet head from an Epson printer at home, as it is very “capricious” and can easily become unusable. The price of a new head is comparable to that of a new printer. Therefore, if there is a suspicion that the nozzles have dried up, it is better to contact the service center.
Damage to the magnetic shaft
The main purpose of the magnetic roller is to transfer toner to the drum unit. Since the toner has abrasive particles, it is because of them that the wear of the magnetic roller occurs.
If the magnetic roller is damaged, the following printing defects become noticeable:
- white voids appear on the sheet;
- gray blots appear, evenly spaced on the paper;
- faint print;
- uneven image fill.
Also, if the magnetic shaft is damaged, horizontal wavy stripes may appear.
This problem can only be solved by replacing the shaft.
Does the printer print in stripes? 9 reasons and their elimination
During the operation of laser printers, users quite often face the problem of a decrease in print quality, namely the appearance of horizontal or vertical stripes when printing documents.
There can be several reasons for the decline in laser print quality:
- toner is low;
- laser problems;
- damage to the drum unit;
- damage to the magnetic roller;
- violation of the contact between the magnetic roller and the drum;
- the metering blade is installed incorrectly;
- cartridge leaks;
- the mining bunker is overcrowded;
- failure of the charge roller.
Streaks can also be caused by damage to the cartridge due to dropping, low-quality toner, or improperly refilled cartridge.
White streaks when printing
If the printer prints white streaks, it could mean that the ink cartridge is out of ink or there is a problem with the laser.
An indication that a cartridge has run out of toner is a vertical white stripe along the entire length of the page, which increases in width with each subsequent printout. It is important to remember that if the printer is out of toner, do not remove and shake the cartridge; these steps will not solve the print quality problem, but may damage the drum unit. The way out of the situation is refilling the cartridge.
If toner is present in the cartridge, a problem with the laser may be the cause of the white streaks. For example, the ingress of particles of toner, insects or just dust on the optics. To avoid a defect, you need to regularly monitor the condition of the printer, clean the mirror of the laser scanner from dirt with a smooth, lint-free cloth.
Waste Toner Box Full
Black dots may appear on the sheet, which will merge into one wide stripe. The reason for this defect: poor cleaning, and therefore requires refilling, it is advisable to use the services of another service center.
Damage due to dropped cartridge
The seals may break and toner spills and streaks on the page. The intervention of the master is required in order to solve this trouble.
If the stripes are in different places every time
In most cases, the problem lies in the violation of the integrity (tightness) of the cartridge, it is easy to check and fix the problem. You need to take out the cartridge and shake it, if you do not want to get dirty, then entrust this procedure to a specialist.
Damage to the drum unit
If a dashed black line appears at the edges of the sheet, then this indicates that the drum is worn out; with its further use, it is damaged more and more, which leads to its unusability. Therefore, you can no longer print, but you need to urgently restore the part.
Correct threading is of great importance, contamination of the blade leads to a deterioration in print quality, over time, faint, and then longitudinal black stripes will appear.
It is also unfortunate that when the waste container is full, toner residues can destroy the surface of the primary charge roller. Such defects cannot be ignored, because the service life of the printer mechanism will depend on timely technical assistance.
If toner spills, you should first check to see if the waste bin is overfilled. The fact that the waste container is overfilled with waste toner is indicated by vertically arranged stripes along the entire length of the page, consisting of small chaotic lines and dots. The stripes are usually offset to the left or right side of the sheet. To eliminate the defect, you just need to clean the waste cartridge.
Damage to the drum unit
The drum or photoreceptor is the main part of the cartridge; it is a shaft made of aluminum with a special coating that is able to perceive optical radiation. During the operation of the laser printer, the light-sensitive coating is erased, which entails the appearance of printing defects.
A signal that the photoreceptor is damaged is the appearance of gray-black stripes shifted to the edge of the paper and having a wavy shape.
gray stripes when printing
The solution to the problem will be to replace the failed part of the cartridge, that is, the drum unit.
“Striped printing” can also be associated with such a common problem as drying out of the photoreceptor lubricant. The defect occurs if the printer has not been used for a long time. The “Drum Cleaning” self-cleaning program will help to solve the problem, which can be found by going to the “Printers and Faxes” menu.
