The printer only prints a test page what to do

Typical problems with the printer and resulting in the impossibility of printing

Conventionally, these problems, due to which it becomes difficult or even impossible to print, can be divided into three broad groups:

  • Problems associated with the correct installation and configuration of the printing device (printer) in the system. Other software-based problems.
  • Problems with printer cartridges or CISS (full name. continuous ink supply system).
  • Printer hardware malfunction (electronics and device mechanics).

Problems that fall under the first group are solved most effectively by the majority of users. If we talk about the problems associated with the cartridge, then the situation here is more complicated. solving such problems at home is not always possible and / or rational. If there is an opportunity to purchase a new cartridge, then it is better to use this option. And finally, the third group of problems. if we talk about the possibility of their elimination, then the most basic technical problems are implied: a jammed sheet of paper or a piece of it (which could remain when removing previously jammed paper), a worn-out connecting cable, in which the contact was broken. serious hardware problems with the printer involve contacting a repair shop.

The printer does not print normally. why, what to do, how to fix it

A problem with the printer can arise at any time, but most often it happens when an urgent need to print a particular document or photo. And this despite the fact that a little earlier the printer functioned flawlessly, and now there are problems. the output when printing absolutely blank sheets, blinking of indicators on the front panel, etc.

printer, only, prints, test

The likelihood of encountering problems when printing is very high, a fairly large number of printer owners who print every day end up with some kind of difficulties that impede the process of printing the required material.

Printer software problems, printing subsystem in Windows

Most of the emerging problems of printing lying in the program plane are solved quite efficiently and quickly. These typical problems include the following:

  • The printer driver has failed or is completely absent from the system.
  • Disabled system service responsible for printing.
  • Incorrect / incorrect selection of the default printing device.
  • Pause print mode enabled.
  • Finding the Printer Offline.
  • The problem with the queue of documents for printing. the document is too large, its incorrect recognition. In some cases, printing is done, but very, very slowly, or for the place of readable text, you can see a set of incomprehensible characters, similar in appearance to hieroglyphs.
  • Restricting access to the printing device in the Windows security policy

Naturally, these options are not limited to possible problems, there are other, more fundamental ones, caused by damage to system files and components in the operating system, the conflict of drivers of certain devices and destructive actions of malicious elements (viruses) in the system. With these problems, in comparison with those described above, it is often not possible to cope with “a couple of clicks”.

For network printers, to the above reasons that interfere with normal printing, you can also add the following:

  • The printer port is blocked on the computer where the printing device is physically connected.
  • Incorrectly specified network path to the printing device
  • Sharing settings do not allow access to the printer

In order to eliminate problems in the system or the printer itself, you can do the following. try to print something from another computer, portable device (laptop, tablet, smartphone). If the printer is currently connected via LAN, then connect it via USB or Bluetooth wireless interface (if possible, of course).

This will help you identify the culprit that is causing the printing to fail. If printing is also not carried out from any other device, then it becomes obvious that there are no problems in the system, but it is the printer that is failing.

If you are printing from another source, then this indicates a problem in the operating system. In this case, you should start by opening the Windows Device Manager and examining it for the installed printing device (in this case, the printer must be connected to the computer, it must be powered).

If you do not see a group called Printers in the list, but you see an unknown device or hardware with an exclamation mark or a question mark, then this means that there is no driver for this device. The vast majority of printer manufacturers (Brother, Canon, HP, Xerox, Samsung, Epson) have support sites where you can download the latest software and drivers. take this opportunity and install the printer driver into your system.

If the printer is correctly detected in the device manager, everything is in order with the drivers. Then you should check if the service responsible for printing is running on the system.

Opening the system window “Services” can be opened most quickly by pressing the key combination. Win R and entering the command “services.msc” (without quotes).

In the window that opens with a list of services, find “Print Manager” and check that this service is running (started).

If it is stopped or disabled, then double-click on it with the left mouse button. In the window that opens, select the startup type Automatically, and just below, click the Start button.

Still having a printing problem? We keep looking for a solution.

Open the system window “Printers and Scanners” by entering the appropriate phrase in the Windows search bar.

This window displays both virtual and physical printers. If you did not find yours in this list, then check if the printer is connected to the computer with a cable, if it is plugged into the outlet and if your printer is in the ON mode.

After selecting your printer, you will see the Open Queue button. click it.

In the window that opens, make sure that there are no stuck documents sent to print. If there is anything there, then clear the queue and send some other document to print.

Also, in this window, click on the Printer item and check the following points:

  • Whether your printer is the default for printing. It happens that the system assigns a virtual printer that does not print a document in the traditional sense, but carries out what is printed to a file.
  • Check if there is a check mark next to Pause Printing and Work Offline. They should not be there, remove if necessary. If the printer goes offline, it may indicate a failed connection to the computer, problems with the printer’s power, or its general breakdown.
  • In the same menu, the print queue is cleared. Use it if there are any documents in the print queue. Print another document or try to print a test page on the printer (in the “Printers and Scanners” window, the Manage button. Print a test page).

If the printer is experiencing problems with printing only over the network, then you should check if it is allowed to be shared. By clicking on the Manage button under the printer name, you will go to the page where you need to click on the Printer Properties item.

In the window that opens, switch to the Access tab and check for permission (checked).

Also, in the printer properties window, switch to the Security tab and check that all users are allowed to access the printer.

The reasons why the printer does not print the queue of documents or photos sent to it can be the following:

  • The paper tray has run out of sheets, or the printable sheet is jammed and jammed in the printer.
  • The laser printer has run out of toner or inkjet ink has run out.
  • The printer has a non-original cartridge.
  • The counter of the cartridge / printer has exceeded the estimated limit for the total number of printed sheets. further printing is blocked.
  • The account attempting to print does not have permission to do so.
  • There is a problem with printing the printer due to a malfunction of the operating system.
  • The printing device is defective at the hardware level.

Speaking of blocking printing, it can be noted that this event occurs and is expressed in different ways, depending on the manufacturer of the printer. For example, if the printer runs out of ink, then:

  • some printers accept documents sent for printing, but do nothing
  • and some do not accept the sent documents, but at the same time they output white sheets

Exactly the same happens in other typical situations.

Problems leading to blocking are usually described in detail in the manual for a particular printer.

In general, modern printers include an extensive self-diagnosis system. If the printer has a display, it displays a code of the problem that arose during the operation.

Also, for most modern printers, there is software in which, among other things, it is possible to conduct self-diagnostics. This software is bundled with the printer, and is also traditionally available for download from the official resource of the printer manufacturer.

In the image below, we can see the proprietary utility window that comes with the HP Deskjet 1000 printer.

In a situation where a specific file with a document does not print, then most likely the reason is in the file itself. For example, PDF document format can be protected from printing. If you are faced with such a situation, then the way out may be to create screenshots of the pages of the document, with their subsequent printing, like pictures.

But if you see unreadable characters, hieroglyphs, krakozyabry, squares, etc. on the printed document, then in this situation, the culprit is most likely the font selected in the document. In order to get out of the situation, try changing the font in the document to one of those preinstalled in the Windows operating system. These fonts are recognized and processed correctly by absolutely all printers.

Problems with ink, toner, cartridge or CISS

Any coloring substance, be it printer ink or toner, tends to run out. But, as a rule, this does not happen abruptly, in one moment. Often, the first “bell” of this is the print results. pale colors, whitish streaks, the presence of not properly printed areas on a document or image.

However, there are situations when the level of toner or ink in the printer is sufficient and a printing problem occurs. This can be due to the following reasons:

  • The ink in the print head is dry or has an air lock.
  • The cartridge is not tightly inserted into the printer, its incorrect installation (for example, when the protective film has not been removed on the cartridge). Printer cover not latched properly.
  • The air duct in the cartridge is clogged.
  • CISS ink loop problem. pinched or clogged.
  • Blocking due to non-original cartridge.
  • The maximum number of printable sheets for the cartridge or toner being used has been reached.
  • The cartridge has become unusable.

If an inkjet printer has been idle for a long time, it has not been printed on, then the likelihood of encountering the problem of clogging the printhead with dried beauty is quite high. If the situation with blockage is not fatal, then the procedure for cleaning the output openings of the print head (also known as nozzles) helps. This procedure is carried out using proprietary software. The procedure is functionally identical, but different printer manufacturers name it differently:

  • Epson has a print head cleaning.
  • At Hewlett Packard (HP). cleaning cartridges.
  • Canon has two whole modes: cleaning and a more thorough option, called deep cleaning, which is used if the first mode does not work properly.
  • During this procedure, the pump, which is in the printer, runs a certain volume of ink under high pressure in order to clean the nozzles from clots of dried ink or the formed air lock.

It is worth noting that in the most budgetary models of inkjet printers, the pump is physically absent and, accordingly, nozzle cleaning does not function in them, although the option for carrying out this procedure may be displayed in the service software.

In such devices, the cleaning of the print head is carried out using a soaking procedure followed by rinsing in a specially designed liquid.

After the procedure for removing and then inserting ink cartridges, do not forget to check that they are correctly installed, nothing blocks access to the air ducts that are on the cartridges.

If you have a CISS at your disposal, then carefully check the permeability of the paint along the trains, if everything is in order with the air holes on the paint tanks.

When using a laser or LED printer and encountering spots or stripes, and sometimes even black sheets when printing, you should check: the tightness of the cartridge (toner spills out of it during printing), waste bin (excessive amount of toner gets into it when printing), presence of foreign objects inside the printer, damage to mechanisms, incorrect installation of the cartridge or its physical wear and tear of its constituent elements.

Problems that may arise after refueling:

    • The printer prints in only one shade, for example, green.
    • Printed color appears very faint, although the print cartridge is full.
    • On the printed sheet, only spots of a multi-colored color or similar anomalies are visible for the image space.

The nature of these malfunctions may be associated with contamination of the printer mechanisms with a dye, incorrect installation of the cartridge (s), irregularities in the procedure for refilling / refilling cartridges.

The absence of text / image during printing and, accordingly, the issuance of white sheets by the printer, or various defects that arose when printing after replacing the cartridge from the original to a compatible one, or refilling the cartridge with conditionally compatible ink, indicate incomplete compatibility with your printing device.

On some printer models, these problems can be solved by flashing the cartridge or the printer itself, while others cannot be corrected and the only way out of this situation is to purchase original consumables and accessories.

    Hardware and Printer Problems

Breakdowns of printing devices are varied, and they are not always expressed in complete inoperability. no indication when turned on, no printing of a document sent to the printer. Typical hardware problems can be expressed as follows:

    • Printing is carried out, but one color is missing, for example, the very popular black. And at the same time, there are no complaints about the cartridge. there is a sufficient amount of paint in it, it is original or at least compatible, and fully functional. Replacing the cartridge with another (or toner, if the printer is laser), the situation does not change at all.
    • Only part of the document or picture is printed on the page.
    • Toner smears or weakly adheres to the printed sheet.
    • The print paper is not picked up by the printer, or is constantly chewing on it.
    • Incorrect printing of documents with a typical (popular) font.
    • The document is shifted when printed on the sheet, incorrectly positioned.
    • Printing more or less documents that were actually sent to print

These problems are serious enough, they are of a purely hardware nature. It is hardly possible to solve them without special technical knowledge, diagnostic equipment.

On your own, you can solve software problems related to operation: whether the printer has jammed the paper, check the correct installation of the cartridge, check the printer mechanisms available for review for foreign objects, clean the printer from ink or toner.

In all other cases, it is recommended to contact a repair shop, or to resort to purchasing a new printer.

    Blank sheets in the document

If you do not preview a large document and delete pages without text from it, then the printer simply passes them through itself without printing.

If there are no extra blank sheets, change the editor through which the printing is done. For example, replace Word with Adobe Reader or Excel.

The printer stopped printing what to do how to fix the video

There are many reasons why the printer stopped printing. In some cases, the printing device may require serious repair, although more often it happens that a printing error occurs due to minor malfunctions that can be easily corrected by yourself.

All malfunctions for which the printing device does not work can be conditionally divided into two options:

    • when the printer does not print at all;
    • when the printer prints in stripes.

How to print a test page on the printer and what to do if it does not print correctly?

Often, printer users have to resort to a procedure such as printing a test page. It can help you ensure that the basic settings of your device are correct for printing. In addition, the test page displays all information about the printer model and driver version. All of this information can be very useful and useful in troubleshooting various problems.

    Incorrect or missing settings

Parameters can fly off due to voltage surges or user actions. Check the printer’s connection port first. For local devices, this is usually USB001. For a network printer, the port must match the one specified during installation or the network name of the machine.

    • Go to “Devices and Printers”.
    • Find yours and right-click on it.
    • Open “Printer Properties”.
    • In the “Ports” tab, check that the checkbox next to USB001 or similar is in the list of ports.
    • Uncheck the box next to LTP, if there is one. It also causes unprinted sheets to come out.

In the print settings, check the checkbox next to the lines “Print text only” or “Print only image”. If the checkboxes are checked, the printer will not output text on paper if only picture printing is configured.

    Causes of Print Error

Several components are involved in the printing process. First of all, the Print Manager and the spooler service must be running. When accessing the printer, the task calls the Print Manager, which adds the document to the queue of the printing device. The selected printer then loads the job and prints it onto paper. Data can be transferred via USB, Wi-Fi, LAN or other cables.

An error can occur at any stage of this process and its occurrence can be preceded by a number of reasons.

The printer queue was unable to process the corrupted data and as a result was stopped or was unable to start completely.

The second most likely cause of a printing error is the connection between the computer and the printer. If you are sure that the data cable is working correctly (tested on another computer), then the problem may be in the drivers. These can be printer drivers or USB port drivers. Thus, communication between the computer and the printing device is interrupted. This issue occurs after upgrading to Windows 10 from a previous version due to driver incompatibility.

Why does the printer print blank white sheets?

Reboot the equipment, the problem may disappear by itself.

    • Turn off the computer through “Start”. “Shutdown”.
    • Turn off the power to the printer by pressing the button on the housing.
    • Unplug the power cord for a few minutes.
    • Turn on the computer again, wait until it is fully loaded.
    • Plug in the printer.
    • Print your document. If blank sheets come out again, start looking for the reasons.

    Changing the printer’s print processor

Most often, it is enough to change the printer’s print handler so that our printer starts printing the entire document again and stops ignoring the number of specified copies.

How to change the print processor of the printer?

    • Go to “Control Panel”, then “Devices and Printers”, right-click on the icon of your printer and select “Properties”
    • Click on the “Advanced” tab, select “Print Processor”
    • Change the print handler to “winprint” (from Microsoft)
    • Save changes

After that, the problem should go away. If the error persists, go to the next step.

Why does not the printer print from the computer, if it is connected: what to do

In this article, you will find out why situations happen when the printer does not print from a computer or laptop, even if it is connected and previously worked without problems. These instructions are applicable if: failed to print in Windows 10 or older 7 and 8, which are still actively used, work with any model from Canon, HP Epson, Brother, Samsung, Ricoh. Personally, I have “cured” a lot of HP laserjet series, several Samsung SCX4200, Canon lbp 2900 and MP 250, Epson l355 and l800, Ricoh Sp100 su and 111, Pantum 2207 and many others that I can no longer remember.

READ  Windows 10 Can'T See Canon Printer

From my own practice, I know that a PC can see the machine, write ready to print, send it to jobs and output a test page, but the printer still doesn’t want to work with other documents. The problem is relevant for local and network connection types. If the second option is used, then in order to fix the device, you should apply some additional steps.

I will tell you what to do in cases when the printer or MFP stops printing documents and: does not respond or does not work, gives an error “There was an unexpected configuration problem” or something similar, does not respond to commands, stops during the process, just runs the paper, prints the wrong thing, doesn’t make multiple copies. We will separately consider the option when the equipment does not turn on at all.

Solved: Printer prints a test page every time I turn it on Page 9. HP Support Community

I lived with this problem for over a year before I started studying it. Recently looked at the HP forum to find answers and tried to scan a copy of a test page and it didn’t work? Then I looked into my printer where the color cartridges are located and noticed that my two cartridges were not lined up with the open ones to remove them from the printer, so I gently pushed the cartridge holder to the right, but it didn’t budge. I was scared of this, some wondered if I should push it harder and suddenly the printer magically moved it for me !! Looked at the annoying blinking light (insert page to check) and suddenly it disappeared !! I tried this a second time with the same results.

So the main reason for my machine is that my cartridge holder is misaligned (stuck) and requires manual assistance !! If scanning after the test page doesn’t work, you can try my resolution.
